Quick answer
What are large cardboard boxes?
Large cardboard boxes are big corrugated cartons, usually over 450 mm on the longest side, used for moving, storage and shipping bulky goods. Most are regular slotted cartons in C flute or BC double wall board. They are made to your inside size, so heavy or awkward items do not slide around.

What is a large cardboard box?
Most people call a box large once its longest side passes about 450 mm. At that point it stops being a parcel you carry under one arm. It becomes something you lift with both hands, often with hand holes cut into the ends.
Almost every large box we make is a regular slotted carton. That is the classic shape with four flaps on top and four on the base, closed with tape. It is simple, quick to build and strong for its weight.
The photos show typical uses. There are moving boxes with room labels and cartons with a large brand word on the side. Others are plain kraft with a single printed strip.
Who needs large boxes made to size?
Removal firms, storage businesses and anyone moving home are the obvious buyers. Online sellers of bulky goods are another big group, from bedding and cushions to lighting and pet beds. Trade suppliers use large cartons to send several smaller boxes in one shipment.
A made-to-size box matters more as boxes grow. A generic large carton that is 100 mm too tall wastes a lot of space in a van or on a pallet. For parcels that go through couriers, see our shipping boxes built for courier networks as well.
Single wall or double wall for a big box?
Wall choice is the most important decision on a large box. Big panels flex more than small ones, so the board has more work to do. Here is a simple way to decide.
| Board | Thickness | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| B flute single wall | About 3 mm | Contents are light and the box is not stacked |
| C flute single wall | About 4 mm | Contents are bulky but fairly light |
| BC double wall | About 7 mm | Contents are heavy, or boxes will be stacked high |
How do I measure for a large box?
With large items, small errors still matter because they multiply. A box that is 20 mm too long on every side wastes a lot of volume. Our step by step measuring guide has more detail, but these steps cover most items.
- Measure the item at its widest points, including handles or feet.
- Decide how much padding goes around it, for example 20 mm each side.
- Add that padding to each measurement.
- Check the total against the doors, shelves or van it must fit through.
- Send us the inside size you need.
Which large box size should I choose for a move?
For house moves, a mix of sizes works better than one big box. Heavy items should go in the smaller cartons so each one stays easy to lift. Light, bulky things such as duvets or lampshades go in the biggest ones.
A useful rule is this: if you struggle to lift a packed box, it is too big for what is inside it. Split heavy items across more boxes rather than adding a stronger board. Our guide to UK cardboard box sizes lists common moving sizes in millimetres. Label each box with its room and a short contents list as you go, and unpacking at the other end becomes far quicker.
Can large boxes have hand holes and labels?
Yes. Hand holes are die cut into the two short ends, so you can grip the box without hugging it. They suit moving and storage boxes that get lifted often. For very heavy contents, use double wall board around the holes.
Printed panels are just as useful. Many customers add a room list, a fragile panel or a contents box to fill in by hand.
- Room checklists, as seen on the moving box photo
- Size words such as Medium or Large in big letters
- This way up arrows and handling symbols
- A brand name or logo on two or four sides
- A blank panel for a handwritten contents list
How do I pack a large box so it survives the journey?
Large boxes fail at the base more than anywhere else. Tape the bottom flaps with an H pattern: one strip along the seam and one across each short edge. Do the same on the top once the box is full.
Keep the box full but not bulging. An underfilled box collapses when something is stacked on it. An overfilled one pushes the flaps open. Fill gaps with paper or soft items so the load does not shift. Before sealing, give the box a gentle shake. If you hear movement, add more filler until it goes quiet.
Are large boxes good for long-term storage?
They can be, if you choose the board and size with storage in mind. Boxes in a loft, garage or unit often sit under others for months. Double wall board keeps its shape far better under that steady weight.
Keep storage boxes to a few standard sizes so they stack in neat columns. Mixed sizes leave overhangs, and an overhanging edge is where boxes start to crush. A printed contents panel on the short end lets you read the box without pulling it out.
Keep cartons off bare concrete floors, which can hold damp. A pallet or a shelf a few centimetres up makes a real difference over a long winter.
What are common mistakes with large boxes?
The first is putting heavy things in very big boxes. A large carton full of books is hard to lift and puts strain on the base. Use a smaller box for dense items.
The second is choosing single wall for a box that will sit at the bottom of a stack. Pick double wall in that case. The third is forgetting how the boxes will be stored before use. Large flat-packed bundles still need a dry place with enough floor space.

Large Cardboard Boxes: questions
12 answersWhat size counts as a large cardboard box?
Most people mean a box over about 450 mm on its longest side. We make large cartons to any inside size you send.
Should a large box be double wall?
Use double wall BC flute if the contents are heavy or the boxes will be stacked. Light, bulky items are often fine in C flute single wall.
Can you add hand holes to large boxes?
Yes. We die cut hand holes into the short ends on request. They make heavy or awkward boxes easier to lift.
Are large boxes good for moving house?
Yes. Many customers order a mix of large and medium cartons for moves. Keep heavy items in the smaller boxes.
Can I print room names on large boxes?
Yes. A printed room list or contents panel is a common choice. You tick or write on it by hand when packing.
How do I tape the base of a large box?
Use an H pattern: tape along the centre seam and across both short edges. This stops the base flaps opening under weight.
Do large boxes arrive built?
No. They arrive flat in bundles, which makes delivery and storage much easier.
Can a large box be printed on all four sides?
Yes. We can print one, two or all four side panels, and the flaps too if you need.
What does a large cardboard box cost?
Prices start from £0.25 per unit and depend on size, board and quantity. You get the exact figure on a written quote.
How quickly can I get large boxes?
We make large cartons in 4 to 6 business days after you approve the proof. A tracked service then brings them to you in 2 to 3 business days.
Can I order large boxes in inches?
Yes. Send the inside size in mm, cm or inches and we will work from that.
What if some large boxes are damaged on arrival?
Send us photos within 10 days. We reprint the damaged cartons or refund you.
