Quick answer
What are small cardboard boxes?
Small cardboard boxes are compact boxes, often under 200 mm on the longest side. They are made for little items such as candles, jewellery, soap or spare parts. Most are thin E flute mailers or folding board cartons, and because they are cut to size, the product sits snugly with little or no filler.

What counts as a small cardboard box?
There is no fixed rule, but most people mean a box that fits in one hand. That usually means under 200 mm on the longest side. Think of a box for a candle, a ring, a bar of soap or a set of screws.
At this size, a few millimetres make a big difference. A ring rattling inside a box twice its size looks careless. A box made to the item's real size looks deliberate, and it needs no tissue or filler to stop movement. It also means a smaller outer parcel, which can lower the postage band you pay.
The photos above show the range: brown kraft mailers, black and white cubes, small slotted cartons and fully printed mailers with a pattern inside.
Who uses small boxes?
Small boxes are popular with sellers whose products are light and valuable. Jewellers, candle makers and skincare brands make up a large share of orders. So do engineering firms sending small parts, and agencies sending samples or event packs.
Many of these orders go out through the post. If letterbox delivery matters to you, compare this page with our small mailing boxes for postal orders, which focus on slim mailing shapes.
- Jewellery and watch sellers
- Candle, soap and wax melt makers
- Skincare and cosmetics brands
- Tech accessory and spare parts suppliers
- Event teams sending samples, pins and badges
Which style suits a little product?
Small boxes come in a few common shapes, and each one opens differently. The right one depends on whether the box is posted on its own, sits inside a larger parcel or goes on a shelf.
| Style | Board | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Roll end mailer | E flute corrugated | Posted on its own, opens like a lid |
| Tuck end carton | Kraft or white folding board | Shelf display or inside a larger parcel |
| Small cube | Folding board or E flute | Candles, mugs and gift items |
| Small slotted box | E or B flute | Parts, refills and trade packs |
How do I size a small box accurately?
Measuring small items is easy to get slightly wrong. A 3 mm error on a 60 mm item is a large share of the box. Use a ruler or callipers rather than a tape measure, and our box measuring guide with examples shows the common slips.
- Measure the product in its final wrapping or pouch.
- Record length, width and height in millimetres.
- Add 2 to 3 mm on each side for an easy fit.
- If you want an insert, tell us its depth too.
- Send the inside size, and we add the board thickness outside.
Which board works best at small sizes?
Thin board folds more neatly around tight corners. That is why most small boxes use E flute corrugated, at about 1.5 mm, or kraft and white folding board. Thicker flutes can look bulky on a box the size of a teacup.
If the box will travel on its own through the post, E flute gives a good balance of protection and crisp edges. If it sits inside a bigger shipping carton, folding board is often enough. Our flute guide in millimetres compares each option.
Can small boxes be printed?
Yes. Small boxes are often the ones customers keep, so print earns its place here. You can choose one colour, two colour or full colour CMYK printing, inside and out.
- A one colour logo on kraft keeps a natural look.
- Full colour patterns work well inside a mailer lid.
- Black board with foil stamping suits jewellery and gifts.
- Matte lamination gives white board a smooth, soft feel.
- Spot UV can pick out a logo on a dark background.
Should a small box be kraft, white or black?
Board colour sets the mood before anyone opens the lid. Brown kraft feels natural and handmade, which suits candles, soap and refill packs. It also hides scuffs well on a box that gets handled a lot.
On a white small box, inks print brighter and fine detail stays sharp. It is a good base for skincare, tech accessories and anything with a detailed logo. Small marks show more easily, so it pairs well with a matte or gloss lamination.
Black board gives a darker, more formal look. It is a common pick for jewellery, watches and gift items, and it suits foil stamping in gold or silver. As with white, a lamination helps protect the surface from rubbing in transit.
How do I stop small items moving inside?
A snug box solves most of the problem. For loose or fragile pieces, an insert does the rest. A card insert with a slot can hold a ring, a lipstick or a USB stick in one spot.
If several small boxes go into one larger carton, pack them tightly in rows. Gaps let the little boxes shift and scuff during transit. A divider or sheet of card between layers stops corners denting each other. Where you can, place the small boxes the same way up, so labels stay readable and nothing rests on a lid.
What goes wrong with small box orders?
The biggest problem is forgetting the wrapping. A candle measured bare will not fit once it sits inside tissue or a pouch. Measure the item exactly as it will be packed.
Another is picking thick board for a tiny box. It makes the corners round and soft, and it adds bulk for no benefit. Lastly, some customers order a lid style that is hard to open with small fingers. A thumb notch, like the one in some of our photos, solves that.

Small Cardboard Boxes: questions
12 answersWhat is the smallest cardboard box you can make?
We make boxes to the size you send. Very small boxes, under about 50 mm, often work best in folding board rather than corrugated.
Is E flute strong enough for a small posted box?
For light items such as jewellery, cosmetics or candles, E flute usually works well. It gives crisp corners and decent crush resistance at small sizes.
Can I get small boxes in black?
Yes. We can print the board black on the outside, inside or both. Black small boxes pair well with foil stamping.
Can small boxes have an insert?
Yes. A card or corrugated insert can hold a single item or several pieces in their own slots. Tell us the item sizes when you ask for a quote.
Do small boxes need tape to close?
Roll end mailers and tuck end cartons close with folding flaps, so they need no tape. Small slotted boxes usually need a strip of tape.
Can you print the inside of a small box?
Yes. Inside print is available on mailers and tuck end cartons. A short message or pattern inside the lid works well at small sizes.
Should I measure the product with its packaging?
Yes. Measure the item exactly as it will be packed, including any pouch, wrap or tissue. Then add 2 to 3 mm each side.
Can I order several small sizes at once?
Yes. Many customers order two or three sizes together. Each size gets its own proof so you can check them one by one.
What finishes suit small boxes?
Matte lamination, gloss lamination, spot UV, foil stamping and embossing are all available. Foil and embossing stand out well on small lids.
How much do small cardboard boxes cost?
Pricing starts at £0.25 per unit. Your written quote gives the exact cost for your size, board, print and quantity.
Do small boxes arrive folded?
No, they arrive flat. This keeps delivery compact and lets you store them easily until needed.
Is there a difference between small boxes and small mailing boxes?
Small boxes cover cubes, cartons and mailers for any use. Small mailing boxes are aimed at slim, posted parcels.
