A corrugated box has a wavy layer of paper, called the flute, glued between flat liners. That fluted core gives the board its spring, so it absorbs knocks that would crease plain card.
This range holds the boxes that travel: slotted cartons for warehouses, double wall cases for heavy goods, and product-shaped boxes for books, mugs, prints and records. All of them are cut to the inside dimensions you ask for.
The board, the flute and the box style are all chosen per order. Two cartons with the same outside size can behave very differently on the road, so we ask about the load before we quote.
If you are not sure where to start, our custom corrugated boxes in any size page covers the general-purpose carton that most other styles grow from.

Who uses corrugated shipping boxes?
Anyone who sends goods by courier or moves stock between sites needs a box that survives the trip. That covers online shops, wholesalers, makers, printers and warehouses.
Specialist sellers often want a box shaped around one product. A record label posting LPs, for example, wants a flat square case rather than a deep carton. Our vinyl record mailing boxes are built for exactly that.
Volume buyers tend to standardise on three or four sizes. That keeps the packing bench simple and makes reorders quick, because each size already has an approved proof on file.
- Web shops sending orders to homes
- Wholesalers shipping cases to retailers
- Potteries and gift makers posting breakables
- Booksellers and publishers sending stock
- Print studios and artists posting flat work
- Warehouses packing goods for pallets
Slotted, overlap or folding: which style do I need?
The slotted carton is the workhorse. On a regular slotted container, all four flaps are the same depth and the long ones meet in the middle. It wastes very little board, which keeps the unit cost down.
Take the top flaps away and you have a half slotted container, which stays open and is ideal for picking or for use with a separate lid. On a full overlap container the long flaps reach right across the top, giving a double layer for heavy or awkward goods.
Folding styles, such as the tuck front, need no tape and open like a gift. For bulk stock, though, a regular slotted container made to size is usually the cheapest box per cubic metre.
When should I choose double wall board?
Single wall board covers most parcels under a medium weight. Move up to BC double wall, about 7 mm thick, in three cases. The box is heavy, it sits low in a stack, or the contents can break.
Double wall also helps on long journeys with several handling points. Each drop and transfer is another chance for a corner to give way. Our heavy duty double wall boxes page compares common sizes.
Be aware that double wall adds weight and outside size. Check whether the extra millimetres push the parcel into a dearer postage band before you commit.
| Situation | Suggested board | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Light parcel, short trip | E or B flute single wall | Neat, light and low cost |
| Medium parcel, courier network | C flute single wall | More cushion in the flute |
| Heavy or stacked boxes | BC double wall | Two flutes resist crushing |
| Glass, ceramics or electronics | BC double wall plus inserts | Holds goods away from the walls |
Boxes shaped around a product
A box that matches the product uses less filler, packs faster and arrives looking tidy. Several styles here are designed for a single type of item.
Books need a shallow box with stiff corners. Mugs need a snug cell so the handle cannot snap. Flat art needs a rigid, wide case that will not bend. Our mug shipping boxes with a snug fit show how close sizing reduces breakages.
Product boxes also save time at the bench. A packer who does not have to wrap, fill and trim can send far more parcels in an hour.
- Book boxes: shallow depth, tight corners
- Mug boxes: one cell per mug, handle protected
- Art print boxes: wide, flat and stiff
- Record boxes: square for 12 inch sleeves
- Stationery boxes: room for mixed sets
- Business card boxes: small and stackable
What inside size should a shipping box be?
Take the measurements at the widest points, including any bubble wrap or tissue. Write the figures as inside length, width and height in millimetres if you can.
For fragile goods, leave 30 to 50 mm on every side for cushioning. For books, clothing and other sturdy items, 5 to 10 mm is usually enough.
Write the sizes in the order length, width, height. The height runs from the opening down to the base. A box that opens on the long side therefore has a different height from one that opens on the end.
Our guide to measuring a box's inside size explains which side counts as length and why outside sizes cause trouble.
Printing on corrugated shipping boxes
Corrugated board takes print well. Many shipping boxes go out with a one colour logo on brown kraft, which is quick to set up and reads clearly on a doorstep.
For more colour, full CMYK printing works on white or kraft liners. Inside print is a good way to add a thank-you message without changing the plain look outside. See our printed ecommerce shipping boxes for examples.
Our designers will set out the artwork for nothing, and a digital proof lands in your inbox before a single sheet is printed.
Mistakes that damage shipping boxes in transit
Most transit damage comes from three things: a box that is too big, board that is too thin, and goods that can move. Fix those and breakage rates fall sharply.
Oversized boxes are the hidden cost. Empty space needs filler, and the box can collapse when something heavy lands on it. For high-value goods, a retention box that holds the product keeps it suspended away from all six walls.
Weak taping is the other common fault. Run tape along the centre seam and over both edges of the base, and do not rely on a single strip.
Finally, check the box before a busy period. Pack one with your real goods, drop it from waist height onto a hard floor on a corner, and open it. If anything moved or cracked, change the fit or the board.
Ordering corrugated boxes step by step
You can order from the short form above or open Design Your Box and try your logo on a photo of the carton. For drinks and bottles, the corrugated carrier boxes with handles page has its own form.
- Choose the box style from the comparison table.
- Measure the inside length, width and height.
- Tell us the packed weight so we can suggest a board.
- Pick plain or printed, and how many colours.
- Approve the free digital proof.
- Your boxes are made in 4–6 business days.
- They arrive by tracked delivery 2–3 business days later.
What sets the price of a shipping box?
Unit prices begin at £0.25 and are confirmed on a written quote. The figure moves with box size, board, print and the number of boxes ordered.
Plain slotted cartons in single wall are the lowest cost per box. Double wall, special shapes such as carriers and retention frames, and full colour print all add to the cost.
Asking for prices at two or three quantities on the same quote is the quickest way to see where the savings start.
- Dimensions and amount of board
- Single wall or double wall
- Box style and any inner parts
- Print colours and sides printed
- Quantity ordered
Storing and packing flat-packed cartons
All of these boxes arrive flat to save space. Keep them somewhere dry and off a cold floor, because damp board loses stiffness quickly.
Fold each box along the creases rather than across them. Square the box up before you tape it, since a skewed carton stacks badly and is weaker at the corners.
Busy book sellers should keep book shipping boxes in common sizes next to the bench. Then the right box is always to hand.
Stack flat bundles on their sides rather than face down under weight. Heavy loads on top can crush the flutes before the boxes are ever folded.
Corrugated and Shipping Boxes: questions
12 answersWhat is the strongest box in the shipping range?
A full overlap container in BC double wall is the stiffest standard style. The full-width flaps give two layers of board across the top and base.
What does RSC mean on a box quote?
It is short for regular slotted container: the everyday carton where all flaps are equal depth and the outer pair meet in the middle.
Can shipping boxes be printed?
Yes. Choose one or two spot inks or full CMYK. Either face of the board can carry print.
How thick is double wall board?
BC double wall is roughly 7 mm. It combines a B flute and a C flute with three liners.
Is single wall strong enough for posting?
For most light and medium parcels, yes. Single wall in C flute, near 4 mm thick, gives good cushioning for everyday orders.
Do you make boxes for one specific product?
Yes. Book, mug, record, art print and business card boxes are all sized around a single type of item, and you can give us your exact product size.
Can I order shipping boxes without a logo?
Yes. Any style can be supplied in plain brown kraft with no printing.
How long does an order of shipping boxes take?
Count 4–6 business days of making from the day you approve, then 2–3 business days in tracked transit.
Do you charge for delivery?
No. Shipping is on us for every order going to a UK address.
What happens if boxes are crushed when they arrive?
Take photos and tell us within 10 days. We will replace the damaged boxes or refund them.
What is a retention box?
It is an outer carton with an inner frame that holds the product against a stretchy film. The item is suspended in the middle, away from every wall.
Should I give inside or outside sizes?
Always inside sizes. We add the board thickness to work out the outside, which matters most on double wall.
