What is a cardboard box with a lid?
It is a box you can open and close as often as you like without tape or tearing. Most are two pieces: a base tray and a lid that drops over it. The photos show plain kraft versions, with a small notch cut into the base so you can lift the lid easily.
There is also a one-piece version where the lid is hinged along the back. Mailer boxes work this way. Both kinds are popular because the box keeps its value after the first opening. People reuse them for storage, which keeps your name in their home for longer.
Which lid style is right for my product?
The lid changes how the box feels, how strong it is and how much board it uses. These are the three main options, and our two piece lid boxes for retail show more printed versions.
| Lid style | How it works | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Shallow lift-off lid | Lid covers the top 20 to 40 mm of the base | Shoe boxes, stationery, everyday storage |
| Full depth lid | Lid drops all the way to the bottom | Gifts and items that need double side walls |
| Hinged lid | Lid folds back on one long edge | Posted items and mailer-style packaging |
Who orders lidded cardboard boxes?
Lidded boxes suit products that are opened, used and put back. Shoe brands are an obvious example, but they are far from the only one. Card makers, photographers and stationery shops use shallow lidded boxes to hold prints and paper flat.
Gift and hamper businesses like the full depth style because it feels solid in the hand. Offices and schools use larger lidded boxes to keep paperwork and craft materials tidy.
- Footwear sellers and cobblers
- Photographers and print shops
- Gift, hamper and keepsake businesses
- Stationery and craft retailers
- Archivists and home organisers
How do I size a box that has a lid?
Give us the inside size of the base. We then make the lid slightly larger so it slides on without force. If the lid is too tight, it crushes the base corners. If it is too loose, it falls off when lifted. Our guide to measuring box sizes explains inside and outside sizes.
- Measure the item or stack at its widest points.
- Add a little room for wrapping or tissue.
- Choose a lid depth: shallow or full depth.
- Tell us if you want a thumb notch on one or both long sides.
- Send the base inside size, and we work out the lid from it.
Which board makes a good lid box?
For shelf boxes and gifts, kraft or white folding board gives clean edges and a smooth print surface. It suits lighter items such as stationery, scarves or cards. For shoes and heavier contents, E flute corrugated gives more stiffness at about 1.5 mm.
If the box will be posted without an outer carton, step up to B flute at about 3 mm. Both the base and the lid gain strength, and the lid is less likely to dent if a parcel lands on it. The second example photo shows a deeper, stiffer box of this kind. Tell us how the box will travel, and we can suggest the lightest board that does the job.
How can I print and finish a lidded box?
Most of the visual impact sits on the lid, because that is what people see first. A one colour logo in the centre of a kraft lid is simple and smart. Full colour CMYK printing works well for patterned lids or product photos.
Inside print adds a nice surprise when the lid comes off. Finishes such as matte lamination, spot UV, foil stamping and embossing are all available on the lid panel.
- Foil stamping on the lid for a gift look
- Embossed logo on plain kraft for a quiet, textured mark
- Printed base sides so stacked boxes are easy to read
- A message under the lid for the moment of opening
How should I pack and post a lidded box?
A lift-off lid is not a sealed closure. If you post the box on its own, hold the lid in place. A band, a sticker on each end or a strip of paper tape all work. Otherwise the lid can shift and let the contents slip out.
For fragile or valuable items, place the lidded box inside a plain shipping carton. That keeps the printed lid clean and free from labels. Our mailer and postal box range includes hinged styles that close fully for the post.
Do lidded boxes work for storage at home or work?
Very well. A lid keeps out dust and light, and it can come off and go back on hundreds of times. That makes these boxes a favourite for photos, letters, craft kits and spare cables.
For storage, choose a few sizes that share the same footprint. Lids of the same size stack neatly, even when the bases are different depths. A printed or handwritten label on the short end lets you find a box without lifting the ones above it.
If the boxes will hold paper for years, keep them somewhere dry and away from radiators. Board that stays dry keeps its shape and the lid keeps its easy fit.
What goes wrong when ordering boxes with lids?
The most common issue is asking for a tight lid. A lid that needs pushing on looks fine in a photo but frustrates customers and splits corners. A lid that slides on smoothly is the better choice.
Another is skipping the thumb notch on a full depth lid. Without it, the lid can create a seal of trapped air and be hard to lift. Lastly, check that your print reads the right way round once the lid sits on the base. The proof will show this, so take a moment to check it.

Cardboard Boxes with Lids: questions
12 answersWhat is the difference between a shallow and a full depth lid?
A shallow lid covers only the top part of the base. A full depth lid reaches the bottom and gives double side walls all round.
Can I get a hinged lid instead of a separate one?
Yes. A hinged lid folds back along one edge and closes with a tuck. It works well for boxes that will be posted.
Will the lid stay on during posting?
A lift-off lid can move in transit. Hold it with a band or stickers, or place the box inside a shipping carton.
What is the notch on the side of the base?
It is a thumb notch, a half-moon cut-out that makes the lid easy to lift. We can add it to one or both long sides.
Can I print the lid only and leave the base plain?
Yes. Many customers print the lid and keep a plain kraft base. It keeps costs down and puts the design where it is seen.
Are lidded boxes good for shoes?
Yes. A shallow lid box in E flute or folding board is the classic shoe box. We make it to the size of your shoes.
Can I reuse cardboard boxes with lids?
Yes. Because they open without tape, they can be opened and closed many times, which makes them handy for storage.
Do bases and lids arrive assembled?
No. Both arrive flat in separate bundles. Each part folds into a tray with locking corners.
Can I add an insert to a lid box?
Yes. A card tray or divider can hold items in place inside the base. Tell us what the insert needs to hold.
How much do boxes with lids cost?
They start at £0.25 per unit. The final price depends on size, board, print and finish, and is set on a written quote.
How long does production take for lidded boxes?
Production takes 4 to 6 business days from proof approval. Tracked delivery follows in 2 to 3 business days.
Which board should I choose for a heavy lidded box?
Choose E flute or B flute corrugated for heavier contents. Folding board is best kept for light items.
