What is a business card box?

It is a small box made to hold a stack of business cards with almost no gap. Cards sit flat, edges stay crisp and the stack does not fan out in a drawer or a bag.

Our photos show three common versions. A kraft box stands upright with a card resting in front of it. A yellow flip-lid box shows a dark green card set inside. A pair of kraft tuck-top boxes hold colourful cards, with a notch to lift them out.

Each style can be printed or left plain. Many printers use plain kraft for everyday orders and a printed box for premium work.

Who orders business card boxes?

The biggest buyers are printers who send cards to their own clients. A tidy box makes a cheap product feel finished, and it stops cards getting scuffed in transit.

Others order for themselves. A good box on a desk or in a briefcase says something before the card is even handed over.

Designers are a growing group. When they hand over a new brand, the boxed cards are often the first thing the client can hold. It is worth getting that moment right.

  • High street and online print shops
  • Graphic designers delivering a brand pack
  • Estate agents, solicitors and consultants
  • Hair and beauty salons with appointment cards
  • Companies preparing welcome packs for new hires
  • Wedding and event stationers with place cards

Which style of card box should I choose?

Each style suits a different use. The table below compares the three we make most often.

If you want something that feels like a keepsake, look at two-piece boxes with a lift-off lid. They take a little longer to open, which suits a premium card.

Flip-lidOpens like a bookPremium cards and gift packs

How many cards fit in a box?

It depends on how thick the card is. A heavy board card takes up more room than a lighter one, so the same box holds fewer of them.

The simplest way is to stack the cards you will actually supply and measure the height. Add a millimetre or two so the stack slides in and out without catching.

Special finishes change the count too. Duplexed, foiled or edge-painted cards are often thicker than a plain card, so always measure the finished stack.

  1. Print or take a stack of your final cards.
  2. Count out the number you want per box.
  3. Measure the stack height with a ruler or callipers.
  4. Measure the card length and width.
  5. Add 2 to 3 mm to each measurement.
  6. Send us the inside size, or the card size and count.

Which board works for a card box?

Folding board is the usual choice. It is thin enough to keep the box compact and smooth enough for sharp, detailed print. Kraft gives a natural look, and white board shows colours at their brightest.

If the boxes will be posted on their own, E flute corrugated adds protection. Many printers post card boxes inside a small corrugated mailing box instead, which keeps the card box slim.

Coloured board is not needed for a coloured box. We print the colour onto white or kraft board, which keeps the choice of shades wide open.

What makes a card box easy to use?

A thumb notch at the front is the most useful detail. It lets you pinch the top cards and lift them out without tipping the box over.

A tuck flap with a small slit lock keeps the lid shut in a bag. On flip-lid boxes, a slight overhang on the lid edge makes it easier to open.

Tell us which of these details you want when you ask for a quote. Our designers will show them clearly on the proof.

Can I print my logo on the box?

Yes. Choose plain, one colour, two colour or full colour CMYK, on the outside and inside. A single ink logo on kraft is a popular choice for print shops, as it suits cards of any design.

For your own cards, consider matching the box to the card itself. The yellow box in our photos picks up the colour of the card logo. Lay it out in Design Your Box to see the effect.

  • Uncoated kraft for a plain, natural box
  • Matte lamination on dark printed boxes
  • Gloss lamination on bright colours
  • Foil stamping on a name or initials
  • Embossing or spot UV on a logo

Do you make boxes for print shop clients?

Yes, and this is one of our most common orders. Most print shops choose one plain or lightly branded box that suits every customer.

A small label or rubber stamp then adds the client's name or job number. That way one box design covers every order, and you avoid holding stock of many printed versions.

Can a card box hold more than cards?

Yes, with a slightly larger footprint. A common gift pack pairs a stack of cards with a pen, a set of compliment slips or a few stickers.

For these packs we usually suggest a two-piece or flip-lid box with a simple insert. The insert keeps the cards in one bay and the pen in another, so nothing marks the top card.

Agencies sometimes add a short welcome note on a card the same size as the business cards. It sits on top of the stack and is the first thing the client reads.

What mistakes should I avoid?

Card boxes are small, so small errors matter. These are the ones that cause the most trouble.

It also pays to order a few spare boxes. Reprints for a client who runs out are common, and a matching box keeps the second batch looking like the first.

  • Sizing for thin card when the job uses thick board
  • Forgetting the thumb notch on tuck-top boxes
  • Choosing a box with no room for a protective sleeve
  • Posting card boxes loose in a padded bag
  • Printing fine text that disappears on kraft

Business Card Boxes: questions

12 answers
What size box fits UK business cards?

Standard UK cards measure 85 × 55 mm. A box around 90 × 58 mm inside fits them with room to lift the stack out.

How many cards does a box hold?

That depends on the card thickness and the depth you choose. Send us a stack height or card count and we will size the box.

Can you make boxes for square cards?

Yes. Square and mini cards just need their own inside size.

Which style is best for a print shop?

A plain or lightly printed tuck-top box suits most print shop orders. It is quick to fold and works for any client.

Can I add a thumb notch?

Yes. A notch at the front makes it easy to pick up the top cards.

Do you make flip-lid card boxes?

Yes. Flip-lid boxes open like a book and suit premium cards.

Can I post card boxes on their own?

Use E flute corrugated if they travel alone. Otherwise, post them inside a small mailing box.

Can I match the box colour to my card?

Yes. Full colour CMYK print lets you match the box to your card design.

Can my logo be foiled on the lid?

Yes, foil stamping is available on any panel, including the lid.

How soon can I have my card boxes?

Production takes 4–6 business days after proof approval. Tracked delivery adds 2–3 business days.

What if my card boxes arrive with a defect?

Send us photos of the misprint, damage or defect within 10 days. We reprint or refund the affected boxes.
