What is a hexagon box?
It is a box with six sides of equal width, like a honeycomb cell. The shape is folded from one flat sheet, with the panels locking together at a glued or tucked seam.
Our photos show how much the style can vary. There are short printed boxes with windows, a plain corrugated box with a tuck top, and a tall kraft tube printed with a fine pattern.
Hexagons can also lie on their side. One of our examples opens at the end like a carton and holds a rolled garment.
The last photo is a flat layout of a hexagon with a fold-down lid. It shows how the six panels and the closing flaps all come from a single sheet.
Who orders hexagon boxes?
Mostly brands that want to be noticed among square boxes. The six-sided outline catches the eye on a crowded shelf or a market table.
The shape also links naturally to some products. Honey producers often choose it because it echoes a honeycomb, while candle makers like how it frames a round jar.
Smaller makers find it useful at markets. A table of hexagon boxes looks different from neighbouring stalls before anyone reads a word of print.
- Honey and preserve makers packing jars
- Candle makers who want a box that echoes a round jar
- Tea and coffee sellers filling small pouches or tins
- Sock and clothing brands rolling items into a lying-down tube
- Wedding and party planners handing out favours
Which hexagon style should I pick?
Start with how the product sits and how the customer will open it. This table covers the styles we make most often.
| Style | Opens | Shape | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short hexagon with lid | Lift-off lid | Wide and low | Candles, chocolates, gifts |
| Hexagon with tuck top | Top flaps fold in | Square proportions | Jars, tea, soap sets |
| Tall hexagon tube | Top or bottom end | Tall and slim | Bottles, prints, gift tubes |
| Lying-down hexagon | Hinged end flap | Long, on its side | Rolled socks, T-shirts, scarves |
How do I measure for a hexagon box?
Hexagons are measured differently from square boxes. We need the width across two opposite flat sides, plus the inside height for an upright box or the length for a lying-down one.
Measure your product at its widest point. A round jar of 80 mm diameter, for example, usually sits well in a hexagon about 85 to 90 mm across the flats.
If you are unsure, send a photo of the product next to a ruler, or read our guide on measuring a product for a box. We take sizes in mm, cm or inches.
Which board works for hexagon boxes?
Folding board, in kraft or white, is the usual pick for small and medium hexagons. It folds cleanly into six crisp edges and prints well.
For glass jars, candles in heavy holders or tall tubes, E flute corrugated at about 1.5 mm gives extra strength. The kraft hexagon in our photos is a corrugated version.
B flute, at about 3 mm, suits large lying-down tubes that will be posted inside an outer carton. Our guide to corrugated flute types compares the thicknesses.
Print and finish options
Six panels give you six places to work with. Some brands repeat the logo on alternate sides, while others run one pattern all the way round.
We print plain, one colour, two colour or full colour CMYK, and can print inside too. Small all-over patterns, like the honeycomb print on the tall kraft tube, suit this shape well.
You can add matte or gloss lamination, spot UV, foil stamping or embossing to any hexagon. A foil logo on the lid of a short hexagon is a popular finish for candle and honey gifts.
Adding windows and inserts
A window on one or more side panels lets customers see the jar or product inside. The blue honey boxes in our photos use a window on the front panel.
For jars and candles, a card insert with a round cut-out keeps the item in the middle of the box. That stops it sliding into a corner and keeps the box shape true.
Mention windows and inserts when you ask for a price. Both affect the cutting and folding plan.
If the product is a candle, think about the label too. A window placed level with the candle label shows your branding twice, once on the box and once on the glass.
Packing, stacking and display tips
Fold the box fully into shape before adding the product. A hexagon that is half-formed can twist, which puts stress on the seam.
For jars, add a ring of crinkle paper or a small insert so the glass does not touch the walls. Close the lid or tuck top gently, pressing on the flat panels rather than the corners.
When posting, hexagons pack well side by side in an outer carton. Fill the triangular gaps with paper so they cannot shift.
Yes. Short hexagons fit together in a honeycomb pattern on a table, which makes a strong display at markets and shows.
Tall hexagon tubes stand upright like a row of bottles. Lying-down hexagons stack in a pyramid, with each row resting in the dip between two boxes below.
If you sell through a shop, ask the buyer how their shelves are set out. A hexagon that is too tall for the shelf gap ends up lying down, which hides the front panel.
Common hexagon box mistakes
The six-sided shape brings its own traps. Watch for these.
- Measuring corner to corner instead of across the flat sides
- Forgetting the jar lid or wick when measuring height
- Choosing folding board for heavy glass that needs E flute
- Placing text across a fold where it will bend round a corner
- Posting a printed hexagon box without an outer carton
Why choose a hexagon over a round box?
Round boxes look smart, but they are usually made from rolled tube, which is a separate process. A hexagon gives a similar soft outline from folded flat board.
Flat panels also print more cleanly than a curve. Logos and text sit square on each face, and the box will not roll off a table.
If a true round shape matters to you, see our cardboard cylinder boxes for round products. Otherwise, a hexagon is often the quicker and simpler choice.

Hexagon Boxes: questions
12 answersHow do you measure a hexagon box?
We use the width across two opposite flat sides, plus the inside height or length. Measuring corner to corner gives a figure that is too large.
Will a round jar fit a hexagon box?
Yes. Choose a width across the flats a few millimetres larger than the jar's diameter, and consider an insert to keep it central.
Can hexagon boxes have a window?
Yes. A window can be cut into one or more side panels, as on the honey boxes in our photos.
Do hexagon boxes have lids?
They can. Short hexagons often use a lift-off lid, while others close with a tuck top or a hinged end.
Are hexagon boxes strong?
In E flute or B flute corrugated they are sturdy enough for jars and candles. Folding board suits lighter contents.
Can you make a tall hexagon tube?
Yes. Tall hexagons are made for bottles, rolled prints and gift sets. Send the width across the flats and the height you need.
What is a lying-down hexagon box?
It is a hexagon that rests on one side and opens at the end. It suits rolled socks, T-shirts and scarves.
Do hexagon boxes arrive flat?
Yes. They arrive flat and are folded into their six-sided shape by hand.
Can I print a pattern all the way round?
Yes. An all-over pattern runs across all six panels and suits this shape well.
Are hexagon boxes good for wedding favours?
Small hexagons are a popular favour box. A printed name or date on the lid makes them personal.
How much do hexagon boxes cost?
Prices start from £0.25 per unit, always confirmed on a written quote.
What if the boxes are damaged on arrival?
Send photos within 10 days. We reprint or refund damaged, misprinted or faulty boxes.
