Quick answer

What are grey board boxes?

Grey board boxes are rigid boxes made from thick, pressed grey board instead of corrugated card. They do not fold flat like a carton, and most have a lift-off lid or a hinged book-style cover. People use them for keepsakes, photographs, media and presentation gifts.

What is a grey board box?

Grey board is a dense, pressed board with a plain grey surface. It is much stiffer than the folding card used for cereal cartons, and it has no flutes like corrugated board. Press a side and it barely moves.

That stiffness means the box is usually made up at our end rather than shipped flat. The corners are set square and the lid sits over the base. You open the box and it is ready to use.

Grey board boxes sit in our wider cardboard box range beside corrugated cartons and folding styles. They are the choice when the box itself needs to last.

Who uses grey board boxes?

The common thread is a box that will be opened many times and kept, not thrown away after one delivery.

Retail brands also use grey board for the box a customer keeps after the product is used up. A firm lid and a weighty feel say more about care than any slogan printed on the side.

  • Photographers handing over prints in a lidded box
  • Collectors storing magazines, letters and media
  • Gift brands that want a heavier, quieter feel than card
  • Schools and offices keeping documents in labelled stacks
  • Craft sellers packing keepsakes and wedding favours

Which grey board box style should I choose?

There are three styles we see ordered most. Each one suits a different way of opening and storing.

If you are unsure, lid and base is the safe start. It stacks well, the lid can carry a label, and it suits nearly any size. Book style suits a gift that is opened once in front of someone, because the cover swings open like a book.

Why choose grey board over a corrugated box?

Corrugated board is the right choice for a box that travels and is then recycled. It is light, strong for its weight and folds flat. Grey board answers a different question: how to make a box that stays on a shelf for years.

A grey board box keeps sharp edges and a flat lid long after a corrugated carton would sag. The surface is smooth, so labels, foil and embossing sit cleanly. It also feels heavier in the hand, which buyers read as quality.

The trade-off is space. Grey board boxes arrive made up, so a hundred of them take more room than a hundred flat cartons. Plan for that before ordering a large run.

How do I measure for a grey board box?

Because grey board is thick, outside sizes and inside sizes differ more than people expect. Always give us the inside space you need. We then work the outer size out from the board.

Lay the item flat and measure the longest edge, the shorter edge and the depth. For prints and papers, add 3 to 5 mm on length and width so they lift out cleanly. For a stack, measure the whole pile pressed down lightly, then add a little for air. If the box holds a framed piece or a book, measure the item at its thickest point, such as the spine.

Our walk-through on how to measure a box correctly shows where people go wrong.

Can grey board boxes be printed?

Many buyers like the natural grey and leave it bare. It looks calm and businesslike, and it hides scuffs better than white.

If you want branding, we can print one colour, two colour or full CMYK on the outer surface. Foil stamping and embossing work well on grey board, because the dense surface takes a clean, sharp mark. Matte or gloss lamination and spot UV are also on the list.

Our designers will help lay out a lid logo free of charge, then send you a digital proof before any work starts.

Do I need an insert in a grey board box?

Not always. A stack of prints or a set of papers fills the box on its own. Loose items are another matter, because a rigid box gives them room to slide and knock against each other.

For jewellery, small bottles or a set of mixed gifts, a cut insert holds each piece in place. We can make it from card or thin corrugated board. See our page on folding carton inserts for gift boxes for the layouts we make most.

How should I store and send grey board boxes?

Grey board is tough to handle, but it is not designed to travel bare through a sorting depot. An outer shipper protects the finish you paid for.

  1. Keep made-up boxes stacked in their lids, in a dry room off the floor.
  2. Fill the box and close the lid gently so the corners stay square.
  3. For posting, place the grey board box inside a corrugated outer carton.
  4. Pad the gap between the two boxes on all sides.
  5. Seal and label the outer carton, never the grey board box itself.

What mistakes should I avoid?

Ordering outside measurements is the big one. With thick walls, a box can lose several millimetres each way, and A4 sheets no longer lie flat.

Some buyers also choose a lid that is too deep. A full-depth lid looks smart but can be hard to pull off a tightly packed base. A shallow lid of a third of the height is easier to live with.

Another is forgetting the thumb notch on a lid and base box. Without it, a tight lid can be hard to lift. Last, some buyers post grey board boxes with a label stuck on the lid. That marks the surface for good. Use an outer carton from our corrugated shipping box range instead.

How long does a grey board box order take?

You get a free digital proof first. After you sign it off, we need 4 to 6 business days to make the boxes.

Grey board boxes are bulkier to send than flat cartons, so plan shelf space for them. Tracked delivery takes 2 to 3 business days and is free to any address in the UK.

Grey Board Boxes: questions

12 answers
What is the difference between grey board and corrugated board?

Grey board is a solid pressed board with no flutes, so it feels rigid and smooth. Corrugated board has a fluted middle layer and is lighter for its strength.

Do grey board boxes come flat?

Usually not. They are rigid, so they arrive made up and ready to fill.

Can I get a grey board box with a hinged lid?

Yes. We make hinged lid and book style versions as well as the lift-off lid and base.

Is grey board good for storing photographs?

Many photographers use it, because the box keeps prints flat and out of the light. Tell us the print size and we will size the box to suit.

Can you print my logo on the lid?

Yes. A lid logo can be printed, foil stamped or embossed, and you see a proof before anything is made.

Can the inside be white instead of grey?

Yes. We can print the inside in white or a brand colour, which contrasts nicely with the grey outside.

Will a grey board box survive the post on its own?

It is not designed for that. Put it inside a corrugated outer carton with padding round it.

Can I add a thumb notch?

Yes. A half-moon notch on the base makes a snug lid easy to lift, and it is a common choice on lid and base boxes.

What sizes do you make?

Every box is made to your inside length, width and height. Common requests are A5, A4 and photo print sizes.

Can I fit foam or card inserts?

We make card and corrugated inserts cut to your items. Send us the item sizes and we will suggest a layout.

How long until my grey board boxes arrive?

Production is 4 to 6 business days after you approve the proof, and tracked delivery adds 2 to 3 business days.

Can I get plain grey boxes with no print?

Yes. Plain grey board boxes are a popular order, especially for storage and archive use.
