What are black cardboard boxes?
They are ordinary cardboard boxes given a solid black print across the board. The base board is kraft or white, and the black ink covers it fully. That is why the cut edges can show a thin line of brown or white, which is normal.
The photos above show the most popular version: a black roll end mailer with a tuck front. One has a short message printed in white inside the lid. Another opens to show a white inside with a repeating pattern, which makes a strong contrast when the box opens.
Who chooses black boxes?
Black packaging suits brands that want a calm, formal feel. It often appears in fashion, jewellery, watches, grooming, tech accessories and premium food gifts. It also hides marks and dirt better than white during a long journey. Many sellers also like how a dark box makes a bright product look even brighter once it is out.
Black is a good fit when your product photos use dark backgrounds too. The box then matches what the customer saw online. If you want to compare other printed styles, look at our range of printed and retail boxes.
- Clothing and streetwear labels
- Jewellery and watch sellers
- Grooming and fragrance brands
- Tech and gaming accessory shops
- Gift box and hamper companies
Black outside, inside, or both?
You can choose where the black goes. Each option changes how the box looks when closed and the moment it opens. Here are the common combinations.
| Outside | Inside | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Black | Black | Fully dark, formal and uniform |
| Black | Plain kraft or white | Dark outside, simpler inside at lower cost |
| Black | White with a pattern | Strong contrast when the lid opens |
| Kraft | Black | Natural outside with a dark surprise inside |
How do I measure for a black box?
Sizing works the same as any box. Measure the item and give us the inside size. We add the board thickness on the outside. If you are new to this, read our guide to measuring inside sizes before you order.
- Pack the item as it will ship, with tissue or pouch.
- Measure its length, width and height at the widest points.
- Add 3 to 5 mm on each side for an easy fit.
- Decide the style: mailer, carton or lid box.
- Send the inside size and style with your artwork.
Which board suits a black box?
Most black mailers use E flute at about 1.5 mm. It gives crisp folds and a smooth face for solid ink. B flute, at about 3 mm, is better for heavier items such as shoes or gadgets.
For shelf cartons and small gift boxes, black printed folding board works well. Choose kraft board under the ink for a warmer black, or white board for a deeper, more even black. Our guide to E, B and C flutes covers the trade-offs.
What logo printing works on black?
Dark board needs a print method that stands out against it. Standard colour inks can look dull on black, so most customers choose one of these.
- White ink for a clean, simple logo
- Gold, silver or copper foil stamping
- Spot UV, which shows as a gloss logo on a matte box
- Embossing, for a raised logo with no ink at all
- A white printed inside for full colour designs
How do I keep black boxes looking good?
Black shows scuffs and fingerprints more than kraft. A matte lamination protects the surface and gives a soft, even feel. Gloss lamination is also possible, but it shows fingerprints more easily.
Store flat bundles in a dry place and keep them off rough floors. When packing, avoid sliding boxes across a table, as grit can leave marks. Labels peel more cleanly from laminated black board, which helps if you reuse boxes for returns. Fold boxes on a clean, soft surface such as a cutting mat or a sheet of card.
Is a black box right for my product?
Black works best when the product inside has a premium or bold feel. It flatters metal, glass, leather and bright packaging, because they stand out against the dark board. It is less suited to products that look natural or handmade, where kraft often fits better.
Think about the unboxing photo too. Many customers share pictures of what they receive. A black box with a white or patterned inside looks sharp on camera, especially with a single item resting in the centre.
If you are unsure, start with a small run in one size. You can compare it with a kraft version and see which one your customers mention.
What mistakes happen with black box orders?
One is sending artwork in dark grey or rich black that does not match the box. Ask our designers which black to use, and check the proof carefully. Another is placing fine text in a dark colour on the black. It will disappear, so use white, foil or spot UV instead.
A third is skipping lamination on a box that will travel far. Unprotected black ink can rub on corners. Finally, remember that cut edges may show the board colour underneath. That is normal for printed board. Fold one sample box before packing the full run, so any surprise shows early.
Can black boxes be posted directly?
Yes. A black mailer in E or B flute is built to be posted without an outer carton. The tuck front locks shut, and a strip of tape or a seal sticker adds security.
Courier labels stick well to matte laminated board. If you prefer to keep the outside clean, ship the black box inside a plain carton. Our mailer boxes made for posting page has more on posted styles.

Black Cardboard Boxes: questions
12 answersIs the board black all the way through?
No. The board is kraft or white, printed with solid black ink. The cut edges may show the base colour, which is normal.
Can I have a black box with a white inside?
Yes. Black outside with a plain white or patterned white inside is a popular choice. It gives a strong contrast on opening.
What is the best way to print a logo on black?
White ink, foil stamping, spot UV and embossing all work well. Standard colour inks can look dull on black board.
Do black boxes scuff easily?
Black shows marks more than kraft. A matte lamination protects the surface and is our usual suggestion.
Can black mailers be posted without an outer box?
Yes. A black mailer in E or B flute can be posted on its own. Add tape or a seal sticker to keep the tuck front closed.
Can you print a message inside a black box?
Yes. A short message in white ink inside the lid is common, as shown in one of our photos.
Is gold foil available on black boxes?
Yes. Gold, silver and copper foil stamping all stand out well on black board.
Which flute should I choose for a black mailer?
E flute suits light items and gives crisp edges. Choose B flute for heavier items such as shoes or gadgets.
Can I get black lid boxes as well as mailers?
Yes. We make black two-piece lid boxes and tuck end cartons as well as mailers.

Prices start from £0.25 per unit. Your size, board, print and finish set the final price on a written quote.
