Quick answer

What are cardboard boxes with handles?

Cardboard boxes with handles are boxes that carry like a bag. Most have a gable top, where two panels meet and form a cut-out grip. Others have hand holes cut into the side panels, and they suit cakes, takeaway meals, party packs and gifts that are carried rather than posted.

What is a cardboard box with a handle?

It is a box you can carry with one hand, like a small bag. The most common type is the gable box. Two top panels fold up and meet in the middle, and a cut-out in each forms a single grip.

The photos above show this shape in several sizes. One is fully printed in red with cartoon art. Others are plain kraft with a printed label around the middle, and one is in black board with a simple line drawing.

A second type keeps a flat top and adds hand holes on the side panels. That style suits heavier or larger contents. Larger hand hole boxes also suit market stalls that send customers away with several items at once.

Who uses boxes with handles?

Any business whose customer walks out with the order is a good fit. Bakeries and cafés send cakes and pastries home in them. Takeaways and street food vendors use them for meals and kids' boxes.

Event planners and party shops fill them with favours and treats. Shops use them as gift boxes that need no extra bag. For printed retail carry boxes, see also our printed handle boxes for retail.

  • Bakeries, cake makers and cafés
  • Takeaways, food trucks and market stalls
  • Party planners and event organisers
  • Gift shops and hamper makers
  • Schools and clubs handing out goodie packs

Gable top or hand holes: which handle style?

Both styles let people carry the box easily, but they behave differently. The gable shape closes the top fully, so it doubles as a lid. Hand holes keep a flat top that can be stacked.

Side hand holesFlat, closes with flaps or a lidHeavier items and stackable packs

How do I measure for a handled box?

Measure the space the contents need, not including the handle. The handle panels sit above the inside height, so the product never touches the grip. Our guide on measuring a box explains inside sizes in more detail.

  1. Measure the item or the tray it sits on, length and width.
  2. Measure the tallest point, such as a cake topper or a lid.
  3. Leave a little space so the item slides in without tilting.
  4. Decide whether the base needs to be flat for a cake board.
  5. Send us the inside size and how full the box will be.

Which board is best for a carry box?

Most handled boxes use kraft or white folding board. It folds sharply, prints well and keeps the box light. It suits snacks, pastries and party favours easily.

For heavier contents, such as a family meal or a bottle gift set, E flute corrugated adds stiffness at about 1.5 mm. The grip area takes the whole load when the box is lifted. A slightly heavier board stops the handle tearing on the walk home.

If the box will hold unwrapped food, mention it on your quote request. We will confirm the right board for that use.

How can I decorate a box with a handle?

Handled boxes are seen while they are carried, so they work like a moving sign for your shop. A bold design on the side panels gets noticed in the street.

If you prefer a quieter look, a plain kraft box with a printed band or sticker works well, as several of the photos show. You can switch the band for each season or event without reordering the boxes.

  • Full colour CMYK print on every panel
  • One colour logo on kraft for a simple, natural look
  • Black board with a white or foil line drawing
  • Gloss lamination for bright food photos
  • Plain boxes with a printed sleeve or sticker

How should I pack a handled box?

Keep the weight low and central. A heavy item at one end makes the box tip when lifted, and that strains one side of the handle. Use an insert or a card tray to stop items moving.

Do not overfill a gable box. If the contents push against the top panels, the grip will not close properly. For cakes, place the cake on a board first, then slide it in from the side if the box opens that way.

For takeaway orders, think about the order of packing at the counter. Hot items usually go in first and flat at the base. Drinks and sauces travel better in a separate carrier, so they cannot spill over the rest of the meal.

What mistakes should I avoid?

The first mistake is choosing the size by the outside of the box. Contents need the inside space, and the handle adds height above it. A box that looks big enough in photos can still squash a tall cake.

The second is light board for heavy contents. A drink set or large meal needs a stiffer board, or the handle can split. The third is forgetting the base. A tuck base can open under weight, so heavier boxes are better with a crash lock base. Test one full box by carrying it around the shop before you place a large order.

Can handled boxes be posted?

They are made mainly for carrying, not for the post. The peaked top does not stack well, and the cut-out can catch on parcel machinery. If you need to post one, place it inside a plain shipping carton.

For items that must travel by post, a flat-topped box usually works better. Our mailer boxes for posted orders are designed for that job.

Cardboard Boxes with Handles: questions

12 answers
What is a gable box?

A gable box has two top panels that fold up and meet in a peak. A cut-out in each forms a handle you can carry with one hand.

Can boxes with handles hold cakes?

Yes. Many bakeries use them for cakes and pastries. Tell us the cake board size and the tallest point when you ask for a quote.

Will the handle hold a heavy item?

It depends on the board. For heavier loads, choose E flute or a heavier folding board and a crash lock base.

Can I order plain kraft boxes with handles?

Yes. Plain kraft is a popular choice. Many customers add their own sticker or printed band.

Can the box be printed on every side?

Yes. We can print all side panels and the handle panels in one, two or full colour CMYK.

Are handled boxes suitable for posting?

They are designed for carrying. If you post one, put it inside a shipping carton to protect the handle and the print.

Can you make handled boxes in black?

Yes. Black printed board works well, often with a white print or foil stamping for the logo.

Do boxes with handles arrive folded?

No. They arrive flat in bundles. Each box folds up by hand in a few seconds.

Can I add an insert to hold cupcakes or bottles?

Yes. A card insert with cut-outs can hold cupcakes, jars or bottles upright. Send us the sizes of each item.

How much do cardboard boxes with handles cost?

Prices start at £0.25 per unit. The written quote confirms the price for your size, board and print.

How long do handled boxes take?

Production is 4 to 6 business days after you approve the proof. Delivery then takes 2 to 3 business days, tracked.

What if the handles tear or boxes arrive damaged?

Send us photos of any torn handle or damaged box within 10 days. We then reprint the carry boxes or give you your money back.
