What is a mug box?

A mug box is a small, nearly square box with a lid flap that tucks into the front. It is sized so a single mug sits upright with its handle pointing to one side.

The photos show three typical looks. One is a white box printed with a café logo. Another is dark kraft with a simple mug outline, and the third is white with a cut-out window showing a blue printed mug.

All three use the same basic shape. What changes is the board, the print and whether the front panel has a window.

Who uses mug shipping boxes?

Anyone who sells mugs one at a time ends up needing them. A loose mug in a large carton is the classic recipe for a snapped handle.

Print-on-demand studios order the most, as every mug they print goes straight out to a buyer. Potteries come next, because handmade mugs vary and a fitted box shows them off.

Corporate buyers are a steady group too. A branded mug in a branded box makes a tidy welcome pack for new staff or a thank-you at the end of an event.

  • Potters and ceramic studios selling online
  • Print shops making photo and slogan mugs
  • Coffee roasters bundling a mug with beans
  • Gift shops and museum shops
  • Businesses ordering branded mugs for staff and events

How do I measure a mug for its box?

The handle is what catches people out. Measure across the widest point, from the far side of the mug to the outer edge of the handle. That figure is your box length.

Width is the diameter of the mug body. Height runs from the base to the rim, or to the top of the lid if there is one. If you need a refresher, see our step-by-step measuring guide.

  1. Stand the mug on a flat surface with the handle side-on.
  2. Measure from the far wall of the mug to the outside of the handle.
  3. Measure the diameter of the mug body for the width.
  4. Measure base to rim for the height.
  5. Add 2 to 4 mm each way, or more if you use an insert or wrap.

Which board works best for mugs?

For a mug that goes on a shop shelf, folding board gives the crispest print. For a mug that will be posted, E flute corrugated adds a thin cushioning layer in the wall.

Heavier stoneware mugs, or boxes that hold a pair, can move up to B flute. Thicker board makes the box a little larger outside, so allow for that in your outer carton.

If you sell in shops and online, you do not have to choose one. Some studios order folding board for retail stock and E flute for web orders, with the same artwork on both.

Do mug boxes need an insert?

If the box is cut closely, many mugs travel well without one. An insert helps when your mugs vary slightly in size, or when the box has a window and the mug must face forward.

A simple corrugated insert grips the mug body and keeps the handle off the walls. You can add one from our range of corrugated inserts made to fit on the same quote.

Inserts also make packing faster. Staff drop the mug in, the insert holds it in place, and the lid tucks shut without any fiddling with paper.

Can I have a window on a mug box?

Yes. A die-cut window on the front panel lets shoppers see the glaze or the printed design without opening the box. The blue mug box in our photos uses this style.

Windows suit shelf display best. For posted orders, a solid front gives a little more protection, and the print does the selling instead.

Place the window where the best part of the design faces out. Our designers can line it up for you on the proof.

Can a mug box hold a gift bundle?

Yes, with a little extra room. Coffee roasters often pair a mug with a small bag of beans, and tea shops add a tin or a few sachets. We size the box around the whole bundle rather than the mug alone.

A divider or insert keeps the mug apart from the other items, so a heavy tin cannot knock against the glaze. Tell us everything that goes in and we will suggest a layout on the proof.

What print and finish suits a mug box?

Plain, one colour, two colour and full colour CMYK printing are all possible, outside and inside. Kraft with a single dark ink suits handmade pottery. White board with full colour suits printed or branded mugs.

Finishes can be added on top. Mock up your artwork first in Design Your Box and send it with your sizes.

  • Matte lamination for a soft, modern feel
  • Gloss lamination to make bright colours pop
  • Foil stamping on a studio name or mark
  • Spot UV on a logo against a matte background
  • Embossing for a raised mug outline or crest

How do I post a mug safely?

Wrap the mug in paper before it goes in the box, paying extra attention to the handle. Fill the hollow inside the mug with a scrunched sheet so the walls are supported from both sides.

For posting, many sellers place the mug box inside a slightly larger outer box with paper fill around it. That two-box method puts a layer of air and board between the mug and any knock.

Mark the outer box clearly on the top face. Handlers then have a better chance of keeping the parcel the right way up, which helps a mug sitting on its base.

What goes wrong with mug packaging?

Breakages tend to follow the same few patterns. Avoid these and most mugs arrive in one piece.

  • Leaving the handle out of the length measurement
  • Choosing a box with room for the mug to rattle
  • Skipping paper inside the mug's hollow
  • Posting a thin retail box with no outer carton
  • Putting a window where the handle sits

Mug Shipping Boxes: questions

12 answers
What size box fits an 11 oz mug?

A box around 120 × 90 × 100 mm inside often fits a standard 11 oz mug with its handle. Send your exact mug size and we will cut the box to suit.

Do I need to tape a mug box shut?

No. The tuck flap locks into the front and holds the box closed. Tape is only needed on any outer shipping carton.

Can mug boxes be posted on their own?

An E flute box can travel alone if the mug is wrapped and fits closely. For fragile or handmade mugs, a larger outer box gives extra protection.

Can I add a window to the box?

Yes, a die-cut window can go on the front panel. It works best for shelf display.

Can you make a box for two mugs?

Yes. A twin box is made to hold two mugs side by side, often with a divider between them.

Which board is best for handmade pottery?

E flute kraft is a popular choice for handmade mugs. B flute suits heavier stoneware pieces.

Can the inside of a mug box be printed?

Yes, inside print is an option. A short care note or thank-you line inside the lid is a common choice.

Do you make mug boxes in black board?

Yes. Dark kraft and black printed boxes are both possible, like the dark mug box in our photos.

Will the box hold a mug with a lid?

Yes, if you measure height to the top of the lid. Tell us if the lid is removable so we can allow for it.

How long do mug boxes take to make?

Production is 4–6 business days from the day you approve the proof. Delivery is tracked and takes 2–3 business days after that.

What if my mug boxes arrive faulty?

Tell us within 10 days and send photos of any misprint, damage or defect. We will reprint the boxes or refund them.

Can your designers help with my mug box artwork?

Yes, layout help from our designers is free. They will place your logo and text and show it on the proof.
