Quick answer

What makes a box a storage box?
A shipping carton is built to survive one trip. A storage box is built to be opened, closed and lifted again and again. That changes the design in three ways: a separate lid, hand holes, and a board choice that can take weight on top for months.
The lid is the big difference. Taped flaps tear each time you open them, but a lift-off lid goes back on cleanly. Hand holes let you pull a box off a high shelf without reaching underneath it.
You will find storage boxes alongside the rest of our made-to-size cardboard boxes, and every size is cut to order.
Lid and base or a one-piece box with flaps?
Some buyers ask whether a plain slotted carton would do the same job for less board. For a one-off move, it might. For storage that gets opened every week, the lid wins.
Flaps on a slotted carton need tape each time they close, and the tape pulls the liner off when it comes away. After a few rounds, the top no longer shuts. A lid and base box has no tape at all. It also lets you see into the box by lifting one corner of the lid.
If the boxes will be filled once and left alone for years, look at our archive range instead. Those are sized for paper files and come with a fitted lid built for long shelf life.
Who buys cardboard storage boxes?
We see orders from small firms and households alike. The need is the same: tidy, labelled boxes that stack to the same height.
Plenty of buyers order a mix: a few large boxes for bulky items and a run of small ones for the bits that always go missing.
- Online shops keeping stock sorted by product on racking
- Labs and clinics storing vials in a divider grid
- Families packing for a move or a loft clear-out
- Events teams storing seasonal display pieces between uses
- Libraries and offices boxing records and spare stationery
What size storage box do I need?
Start with the shelf, not the goods. Measure the depth and the clear height of the shelf, then work back. A box that fits the shelf exactly wastes no space and pulls out without catching.
Next, check the weight. A box full of books is heavy long before it is full, so books suit a smaller box. Light goods like bedding can go into larger sizes without strain on the hand holes.
Once you know the space, send us the three inside measurements in whichever unit you use. Our guide to common UK box sizes lists sizes that suit standard racking.
Single or double wall for storage?
Stacking is what decides this. Boxes at the bottom of a stack carry everything above them, sometimes for a year or more. Single wall is fine for light goods and short stacks. Heavy goods and tall stacks need double wall.
| Board | Wall | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| B flute single wall | About 3 mm | Small boxes and light items on shelves |
| C flute single wall | About 4 mm | General storage, stacks of two or three |
| BC double wall | About 7 mm | Books, tins, tools and tall stacks |
| White lined board | Single or double | Office and retail rooms where looks matter |
Can I add dividers to a storage box?
Yes, and it is one of the most useful upgrades. A divider grid slots into the base and splits it into cells. Each cell holds one item upright, so nothing leans or tangles.
Labs use grids for sample tubes. Shops use them for bottles, jars and rolls of ribbon. We set the number of cells from your item size, then cut the grid to fit the inside of the box. Read more on our corrugated box dividers page.
Can storage boxes be printed?
Most storage boxes carry at least a label panel. A simple one colour print with lines for contents, date and location saves hours of hunting later.
Brands that use storage boxes in a shop or a showroom often go further. We print one colour, two colour or full CMYK, inside and out. Uncoated kraft keeps the work-room look, while matte lamination suits white board in public areas. Spot UV, foil stamping and embossing are also available.
Our designers lay out label panels free, and you see the proof before any printing.
How do I pack a storage box so it lasts?
Lining up the corners matters more than most people think. The corners carry most of the load, so an offset stack crushes the walls of the box below.
- Put heavy items in first, flat on the base.
- Fill gaps with lighter items or paper so the load cannot shift.
- Stop a little below the rim so the lid sits flat.
- Fill in the label panel before the lid goes on.
- Stack the heaviest boxes at the bottom, with corners lined up.
Where do storage boxes go wrong?
Overfilling is the main cause of failure. A bulging lid does not sit properly, and the box below takes the weight on its lid rather than on its walls.
Damp is the second. Corrugated board softens in a wet garage or cellar, so keep boxes off concrete floors with a pallet or shelf. Third, people pick sizes that do not match each other. Two or three set sizes, chosen to stack, keep a stockroom neat.
Finally, avoid hand holes on boxes that hold loose small parts. Screws and beads can find their way out through the hole. Ask for closed hand holes with a punch-in flap instead.
How fast do storage boxes arrive, and do they come flat?
We start with a free digital proof. When you approve it, the boxes take 4 to 6 business days to produce.
Tracked delivery then follows in 2 to 3 business days. It is free to homes, offices and stores across the UK.
Yes. The base and lid travel flat in separate bundles, which keeps delivery compact. When you need a box, fold the base up and lock or tape the ends, then fold the lid the same way.
Flat boxes also store well. You can keep a stack of spares behind a door and make them up only when needed.

Cardboard Storage Boxes: questions
12 answersDo your storage boxes have lids?
Yes. Each storage box has a separate lid that lifts off whole, so you can open and close it many times without tearing flaps.
Can I have hand holes on the long sides instead?
Yes. Most people choose the short ends, but tell us if the boxes will be pulled sideways from a shelf.
Are storage boxes strong enough for books?
Use BC double wall for books and keep the box to a modest size. Paper is heavy, and a smaller box is easier to lift.
Can I order white storage boxes?
Yes. We make them with a white outer liner, which suits offices, shops and clinics.
Can I print a label panel on each box?
Yes. A one colour panel with lines for contents and date is a common, low-cost choice.
Do you make divider grids for storage boxes?
Yes. We cut corrugated divider grids to the inside of the box, with the number of cells you need.
Will storage boxes stack?
Yes, when they are the same size and the corners line up. Use double wall for the boxes at the bottom of a tall stack.
Can I use storage boxes in a damp garage?
Corrugated board softens in damp conditions. Keep boxes on shelves or pallets, off bare concrete.
Do the boxes arrive assembled?
No. Bases and lids come flat in bundles and fold up by hand.
What size storage box fits standard racking?
It depends on your racking depth and height. Measure the clear space and we will make the box to suit.
Can I order just a few sizes that nest or stack?
Yes. Many customers order two or three sizes chosen to fit the same shelves.
How do I report damaged storage boxes?
Email us photos of the problem no later than 10 days after the boxes arrive. We then reprint or refund the boxes affected.
