What are stationery boxes?

They are printed boxes built around a set of desk items. A notebook sets the footprint, and the depth depends on what goes alongside it.

Our photos show four approaches. A sage green mailer printed with leaves holds a notebook, pens and a greeting card. A bright yellow flip-lid box opens like a book. There are also patterned two-piece lid boxes and a dusty pink box with a hinged lid.

All of them can carry print inside as well as out. That matters with stationery, where the opening moment is a big part of the gift.

Which box style suits my stationery?

The right style depends on whether the box is posted, sold on a shelf or given as a present. The table below sets out the trade-offs.

A mailer is the practical choice for web orders. If you want the box to be kept and reused on a desk, a two-piece lid and base box is hard to beat.

Who orders stationery packaging?

Stationery is a gift-led market, and buyers judge the set by the box. That brings in a wide mix of customers.

Card makers often begin with a simple kraft box and move to full print once a range sells well. Corporate buyers usually want their own logo inside the lid of a gift set.

  • Independent stationery and planner brands
  • Greeting card designers selling boxed sets
  • Monthly stationery subscription clubs
  • Pen and fountain pen sellers
  • Companies building welcome kits for new staff
  • Wedding stationers boxing invitation samples

What size stationery box do I need?

Lay the items out the way you want the customer to see them. The footprint is usually the largest notebook plus a strip for pens. The depth is the tallest stack plus any insert.

Then add a little clearance on each side so items lift out easily. Too tight and the customer struggles; too loose and things rattle.

  1. Arrange every item in its final position.
  2. Measure the full length and width of the layout.
  3. Measure the height of the deepest point.
  4. Add 2 to 3 mm each way for an easy lift-out.
  5. Note any insert so we can allow for its thickness.
  6. Send us the inside size, quantity and a photo if possible.

Which board suits a stationery box?

For posted orders, E flute corrugated gives a slim wall with some cushioning. It prints well and keeps notebook corners safe.

For gift boxes that will sit on a shelf, white or kraft folding board gives a smooth surface for detailed print. Heavier sets with glass ink bottles or metal pens may need B flute instead.

If you sell the same set online and in shops, you can order both. Keep the artwork identical and only the board changes, so the set looks the same wherever it is bought.

Can I fit inserts to hold pens and cards?

Yes. A card or corrugated insert with cut slots keeps pens, pencils and small tools in a neat line. It also stops them sliding across the notebook cover and leaving marks.

Inserts can be printed or left plain. Our folding carton inserts with cut slots can be added to the same quote and proof.

How should a stationery box be printed?

Stationery buyers notice detail, so print and finish matter. Plain, one colour, two colour and full colour CMYK are all possible, outside and inside. A repeat pattern like the leaf design in our photos works well on all four sides.

Inside print is where many brands put their personality. A bright inner colour, as on the yellow flip-lid box, gives a clear contrast when the lid opens. Try ideas in Design Your Box.

  • Matte lamination for a soft, paper-like feel
  • Gloss lamination on bold colour blocks
  • Foil stamping on a brand name or monogram
  • Spot UV on a pattern for subtle texture
  • Embossing to echo a letterpress card

How do I pack a stationery set for posting?

Put the heaviest item, usually the notebook, flat on the base. Lay pens in their insert slots, then place cards or stickers on top where they cannot crease.

Fill small gaps with a little paper shred so nothing shifts. If the box is a gift style rather than a mailer, place it inside a plain outer box for posting.

Wrap anything with a soft-touch or linen cover in tissue first. Those covers mark easily, and a pen cap pressing into them on a long journey leaves a dent.

What should I avoid with stationery boxes?

Small mistakes show up quickly with stationery, because buyers handle every item. These are the most common.

  • Sizing the box for a notebook but forgetting the pens
  • Letting loose pens scratch a soft-touch cover
  • Posting a thin retail box without an outer carton
  • Printing small text in a colour that fades on kraft
  • Skipping inside print on a box meant as a gift

Do stationery boxes work for subscriptions and kits?

Yes, and most clubs do. Pick one size that fits your largest typical month, then use paper fill or a simple insert when the contents are smaller.

Keep the outer print general, such as your logo and colours, so the box suits every month. A printed insert card can then change each time without a new box order.

Event kits are a good fit too. A notebook, pen and lanyard in a printed box makes a tidy conference pack. Schools and colleges use the same idea for exam or art kits.

Wedding stationers use small lid boxes for invitation samples and place card sets. The box lets a couple see the paper, print and colour together, the way guests will.

For kits handed out in person, folding board keeps the cost down. For kits posted to remote staff, choose corrugated so the contents arrive in order.

Yes. A card or corrugated insert can be cut with slots to hold pens and pencils in place.

Can the inside of the lid be printed?

Yes, inside print is available in full colour on lids and walls.
