What is a two piece lid box?
It is the classic gift box shape. You have a base that holds the product and a lid made a few millimetres bigger so it slides down over the walls.
When the lid is lifted, air under it slows the movement a little. That gentle drag is part of why this style feels premium.
Our photos cover the range. You can see plain kraft trays with shallow lids and a large storage box with hand holes. There is also a white box with a deep pink base and a pastel subscription box tied with ribbon.
Who orders two piece boxes?
This style fits both sides of the market: tidy everyday storage and gift packaging that people want to keep.
It also suits small runs well. One base size can carry several products, with only the lid print changing between ranges.
Subscription brands like the style because the reveal works month after month. Changing only the inside card or tissue keeps each delivery feeling new, without reordering the box.
Retailers also use plain two piece boxes as gift wrap at the till. A customer buys a scarf or a mug, and staff box it with tissue in under a minute.
- Beauty and wellness brands sending monthly subscription boxes
- Clothing and shoe sellers who fold items into a deep base
- Gift shops and hamper makers packing sets for birthdays and weddings
- Offices and households storing papers, photos and records
- Jewellers and candle makers wanting a small, neat presentation box
Full lid or shallow lid?
The lid depth changes the look, the strength and the board used. Here is how the two common choices compare.
| Lid type | How it looks | Strength | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full depth lid | Lid covers the whole base wall | Double wall on every side | Storage, heavier gifts, shoes |
| Shallow lid | Base wall shows below the lid | Stiff at the top edge | Gift boxes, subscriptions, apparel |
| Lid with thumb notch | Small cut-out in the base wall | Same as the lid chosen | Tight-fitting lids that need a grip |
| Contrast base and lid | Two colours or prints | Same as the lid chosen | Brand reveal boxes |
How should I measure a two piece box?
Start with the base, measured on the inside. We work out the lid from those figures, so the two parts fit together properly.
Measure your product, or the stack of products with any tissue or card, and add a small clearance on each side. For clothing, measure the garment folded the way you sell it.
Then tell us how deep you want the lid. A lid about a third of the base height is common for gift boxes, while storage boxes often use a full depth lid.
Which board is right for a two piece box?
Small gift and jewellery boxes are usually folding board in white or kraft. It gives sharp edges and fine print.
Subscription and clothing boxes often move up to E flute, about 1.5 mm thick. The corrugated layer keeps the base flat under the weight of several products.
Large storage boxes, like the one with hand holes in our photos, suit B flute at about 3 mm or C flute at about 4 mm. Our comparison of single and double wall boards explains when the thicker option is worth it.
Printing the base and the lid
Because the parts are separate, you can print each one differently. A plain lid with a brightly printed base gives a strong moment when the lid comes off.
We offer plain, one colour, two colour or full colour CMYK, on the outside and inside of both parts. The pink base and grey lid in our photos are a good example of contrast.
Matte or gloss lamination, spot UV, foil stamping and embossing all work on the lid top. Keep the lid edge simple, because it covers the upper part of the base wall.
Packing tips
Line the base with tissue before adding the product, then fold the tissue over the top. It keeps everything in place and adds to the unwrapping.
For subscription boxes, put the heaviest item at the bottom and the smallest on top so nothing gets lost under the tissue. A printed card on top helps the customer understand what they have.
Leave a finger gap of a few millimetres between the product and the lid top. Packing right to the brim makes the lid sit proud and look as if it does not fit.
When posting, wrap a ribbon or a paper band around the box, or use a sticker on each side. Then place it inside a shipping carton so the lid cannot slip.
Mistakes to avoid
A few simple slips account for most two piece box problems.
- Giving the lid size instead of the base inside size
- Asking for a very tight lid on a heavy box without a thumb notch
- Picking folding board for a large storage box that needs B or C flute
- Placing a logo on the base wall where the lid covers it
- Sending the box by post without an outer carton or band
Two piece boxes for storage
Lift-off lid boxes in corrugated board are a common choice for paperwork, photos and household items. Hand holes in the ends make them easier to carry.
A full depth lid adds a second wall around the whole box, which helps when boxes are stacked on a shelf. For long-term paper storage, have a look at our archive boxes made for paperwork too.
Plain kraft is the usual pick for storage. A one colour label panel on the end makes contents easy to note.
Why do people keep two piece boxes?
A lift-off lid box is easy to reuse. Once the gift is out, the box becomes a home for letters, hair ties, chargers or craft bits.
That second life matters to brands. A box kept on a dressing table or a shelf keeps your name in front of the customer for months.
To encourage it, keep the outside print calm and the board stiff. A tidy logo on the lid and a bolder pattern inside the base tends to look good on a shelf.

Two Piece Lid Boxes: questions
12 answersWhat does two piece mean?
It means the box is made of two separate parts: a base and a lid that fits over it. The lid lifts off completely.
Will the lid fit tightly?
We size the lid from your base inside measurements so it slides on neatly. A thumb notch helps if you want a snug fit.
Can the base and lid be different colours?
Yes. Each part is printed separately, so a plain lid and a printed base, or two different colours, are both possible.
How deep should the lid be?
For gift boxes, about a third of the base height is common. Storage boxes often use a lid that covers the full height.
Are two piece boxes good for subscriptions?
Yes. They give a pleasing reveal and are sturdy in E flute. Post them inside an outer carton or with a band to keep the lid on.
Can I add hand holes?
Yes, on larger corrugated boxes. Hand holes are cut into the end walls for easier lifting.
Do they arrive flat?
Yes. Both parts arrive flat and are folded up and locked by hand.
What board do you suggest for shoes?
E flute or B flute corrugated is a good fit for shoes, as it keeps the box square when stacked.
Can you print inside the lid?
Yes. Inside print is available on both the base and the lid.
Is there a size limit?
Every box is made to your size. Small gift boxes and large storage boxes are both common, so send your measurements for a quote.
How long does an order take?
After proof approval, production takes 4–6 business days and tracked delivery takes 2–3 business days.
What if the lid does not fit?
Report it within 10 days with photos. We reprint or refund any faulty, damaged or misprinted boxes.
