What is a product box?

A product box is a printed carton made for one specific item. It protects the product, shows the brand and carries the details a buyer looks for.

Our photos show a few of the shapes it can take. There is a tube carton with a hanging tab look, a white mailer with a cut insert, a pink drawer box and a plain white tuck end carton ready for print.

What links them is that the box is sized and printed for the thing inside, not picked off a list of generic sizes.

A good product box also saves time at the till and on the packing bench, because staff can see what is inside without opening it.

Which products usually need their own box?

Anything sold on a shelf or as a gift benefits from a proper carton. So do items that look plain on their own, like a bottle or tube.

Retailers also ask for one when a product sits next to rivals. A clear, well printed carton helps a shopper pick yours out in a few seconds.

  • Skincare, haircare and cosmetics in tubes, jars and bottles
  • Tea, coffee, chocolate and boxed snacks
  • Small electronics, chargers and accessories
  • Candles, diffusers and home fragrance
  • Supplements and wellness products that need printed information

Which style of product box should I pick?

The style decides how the customer opens the box and how it stands on a shelf. Tall items suit a tuck end carton. Flat, premium items often suit a drawer or lid and base.

Here is how the common styles compare in day to day use.

StyleHow it opensTypical use

Lid and baseSeparate lid lifts offPresentation and keepsakes

How should I size a product box?

Measure the product at its widest points, including caps, pumps and labels. A cap that sticks out by 2 mm can stop a box from closing.

For a single item, allow a small clearance so it slides in without forcing. For sets, measure each item and tell us how they should sit side by side.

Height matters most for tuck end cartons. Too much headroom lets a bottle drop and knock against the top flap, while too little makes the tuck hard to close.

Our guide to common UK box sizes is useful if you want to compare your measurements with typical shapes.

Should a product box be folding board or corrugated?

Folding board is the classic retail carton material. It has a smooth surface that takes fine print, small text and barcodes very well. It suits items sold in shops or packed inside a larger shipper.

If the product box itself goes through the post, E flute corrugated is the better choice. It is about 1.5 mm thick and still prints cleanly, but it resists knocks far better.

Kraft board gives a natural brown finish. White board makes colours look brighter and is the usual pick for cosmetics.

What should I print on a product box?

Think of each panel as having a job. The front sells, the back explains and the sides help when the box sits sideways on a shelf.

Leave a clear, flat area for a barcode on the back or base. Keep small print away from folds and glue flaps, where it can crack or hide.

If you sell in more than one variant, a coloured band or label area on the front lets you swap one element. The rest of the design then stays the same across the range.

  • Front panel: brand, product name and a short description
  • Back panel: ingredients, directions or contents
  • Side panels: size, variant or a repeat of the logo
  • Base: barcode, batch area and your contact details

Which finish suits a product box?

Matte lamination gives a soft, modern look and suits pastel colours. Gloss lamination makes photography and bright shades stand out on a crowded shelf.

Spot UV, foil stamping and embossing work best on one focal point, such as the logo or product name. Used everywhere, they lose their effect.

Uncoated kraft is a good fit for natural or handmade goods, where a simple one or two colour print feels right.

If your box will be handled a lot, a laminate also protects the print from scuffs. That helps on testers and display units that people pick up all day.

How do inserts help a product box?

An insert holds the product in one position so it does not rub or rattle. It also makes the box feel more finished when it is opened.

Inserts also stop glass touching glass. Two bottles in one carton should never sit loose against each other.

Bottles and jars sit well in a card cradle with cut holes. Sets of tubes or vials can sit in a row of slots, much like the mailer in our photos. Browse our folding carton inserts for retail packs for more ideas.

Tell us the diameter and height of each item, and we will plan a cradle that holds them all at the same level.

What are the common product box mistakes?

Most problems come from sizes and artwork rather than the board itself. A quick check before you approve the proof saves a reprint.

  • Measuring without the cap, pump or lid on
  • Placing the barcode across a fold
  • Choosing folding board for an item that will be posted loose
  • Using very thin fonts that break up in print
  • Forgetting space on the back for required product information

How do I order custom product boxes?

You can start the process in a few minutes. Send your details by email or WhatsApp, or build a brief in Design Your Box.

If you already have a carton you like, measure it and send a photo. Our designers will treat it as a reference and adjust the measurements for your product.

  1. Measure the product with all caps and closures fitted.
  2. Choose a style, board and print option, or ask us to suggest one.
  3. Share your logo and panel text so our designers can lay it out.
  4. Check the free digital proof and request any changes.
  5. Approve it, and production runs for 4–6 business days.
  6. Your cartons travel tracked and land in 2–3 business days.

What do product boxes cost to make?

Product boxes start from £0.25 per unit. The exact figure for your size, board and finish is set out on a written quote.

Delivery is included at no charge across the UK. If any cartons have print faults or transit damage, photos sent within 10 days get them reprinted or refunded.

Product Boxes: questions

12 answers
What is the difference between a product box and a shipping box?

A product box presents and protects a single item, usually on a shelf. A shipping box is the outer carton that carries goods through the post.

Can you fit a barcode on my product box?

Yes. Send the barcode as artwork and we will place it on a flat panel, away from folds, so it scans cleanly.

Which board is best for cosmetics cartons?

White folding board is the usual choice because it shows colours and fine text clearly. Kraft suits a more natural look.

Can a product box have a window?

Yes, a cut window is possible on many styles. Mention it with your sizes and we will show it on the proof.

Do you make drawer style product boxes?

Yes. A tray slides out of a printed sleeve, and both parts are made to your inside size.

Can I order several product sizes in one design family?

Yes. We can adapt one design across several sizes so your range looks consistent on a shelf.

How much space should I leave around the product?

A small clearance of a few millimetres is usually enough for a single item. Inserts and sets need a little more, and we can advise.

Can you print directions on the side panels?

Yes. All outside panels can carry text, and inside print is available too.

Is spot UV worth adding?

It works well when used on one element, such as a logo on a matte box. It adds contrast without changing the whole look.

Can product boxes be posted on their own?

Folding board cartons are best packed inside a shipper. For posting on their own, choose E flute corrugated instead.

Who designs the artwork?

You can send finished artwork, or our designers will lay out your logo and text for free.

Do product boxes arrive glued?

They arrive flat. Styles that need a glued side seam come with it already glued, so you only fold and close them.
