What are corrugated carrier boxes?
A carrier box is a pack you pick up by its own handle. The grip is cut into the board and folds up from the base, so there is no separate string, ribbon or plastic part.
Corrugated board gives the carrier enough stiffness to hold drinks upright and bottles apart. It also adds a little insulation, which helps hot cups stay comfortable to hold.
For other boxes with built-in grips, see our printed boxes with carry handles.
Which carrier styles can you make?
We cut three main kinds of carrier, each from a single flat sheet.
Each style can be adjusted. Cell counts, handle height and panel shapes all change to suit the goods. A carrier for four tall juices looks quite different from one for two flat whites.
If you have a carrier you like from elsewhere, send a photo. We can use it as a starting point and cut a version sized to your own items.
- Cup carriers with round cut-outs and a raised centre handle
- Bottle carriers with tall divided cells and a centre grip
- Grocery carriers with tall open cells for bread, veg and bottles
- Gable-top boxes with a closed body and a handle in the roof
- Low tray carriers that hold cups in a flat sleeve
Who uses corrugated carriers?
Coffee shops and juice bars are the obvious buyers. A branded cup carrier is seen by every person the customer passes on the way back to the office.
Craft drinks producers use bottle carriers at markets and in farm shops. Bakers and party shops use gable-top boxes for cakes and treats. Pet shops and toy sellers use them as fun carry-home packs, often with cut-out windows.
Event caterers use them too, since a stack of flat carriers takes little room behind a counter.
Breweries and cider makers often pair a bottle carrier with a printed label on each side. It turns a few loose bottles into a ready-made gift that sells at the counter.
How do I size a carrier box?
For cup carriers, we need the cup diameter at the point where it will sit in the hole, plus the cup height. For bottle carriers, measure the bottle diameter at its widest and the height to the shoulder.
For gable boxes, measure the goods as for any box, giving inside length, width and height to the base of the roof. Bring a cup or bottle sample if you can; it is the surest way to get the fit right. Our page on how to measure a box accurately has more tips.
- Pick the style: cup, bottle, grocery or gable top.
- Count how many items each carrier should hold.
- Measure diameter and height for cups or bottles, or L × W × H for gable boxes.
- Send the sizes with a photo of the items you plan to carry.
Which board is right for a carrier?
Cup carriers usually use E flute at about 1.5 mm or B flute at about 3 mm. Both fold crisply and hold a clean cut-out.
Bottle carriers and grocery carriers carry more weight, so B flute or C flute at about 4 mm is safer. Gable-top boxes for light goods can use E flute, which also gives a smooth face for print.
| Carrier | Common board | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Two or four cup | E or B flute single wall | Neat cut-outs, light to carry |
| Bottle carrier | B or C flute single wall | Stiff cells for glass |
| Grocery carrier | C flute single wall | Holds weight on the handle |
| Gable-top carry box | E flute single wall | Smooth surface for print |
Can carrier boxes be printed?
Yes, and most are. The tall handle panel is a natural spot for a logo, and the side panels can carry menus, social handles or product names.
Print options are one colour, two colour or full colour CMYK, on either kraft or white board. Kraft with a single dark colour is a popular, low-cost look for coffee carriers. Bright full colour suits party and pet boxes.
Finishes include matte or gloss lamination, spot UV, foil and embossing. Our designers help fit artwork around handles and cut-outs, and a free digital proof shows the result first.
How should staff use a carrier?
Keep carriers flat until needed. To set one up, push the base out, fold the dividers in, and raise the handle until the locks click.
Load the heaviest items first and spread them evenly on both sides of the handle. An unbalanced carrier tips and puts strain on one side of the grip.
For hot drinks, make sure lids are firmly pressed on before the cups go in. The carrier holds the cup, not the lid.
Keep a small stack already folded at busy times. It saves fumbling while a queue builds, and flat stock can be topped up during quieter spells.
What should I watch out for when ordering?
Cup sizes vary more than people expect. A 12 oz cup from one supplier may be wider than a 12 oz cup from another. Always measure the cups you actually use.
Do not overload a light carrier. A carrier sized for four coffees will not safely carry four glass bottles.
Leave enough blank board around the handle cut-out in your artwork. Print that runs into the grip can look messy once the hole is punched.
Check how the carrier will be stored, too. Flat bundles kept somewhere damp can soften, so a dry shelf away from sinks and steam keeps the board stiff.
Are carriers a good swap for plastic bags?
For many shops, yes. A carrier holds cups or bottles upright, which a bag cannot do, and it gives a branded surface at the same time.
Corrugated board can go into household paper and card recycling once food or drink spills are removed. Our eco friendly box options page lists other plastic-free packs.

Corrugated Carrier Boxes: questions
12 answersWhat is a corrugated carrier box?
It is a cardboard pack with a handle formed from the board itself. Customers carry cups, bottles or goods by that handle without a bag.
Can you make two-cup and four-cup carriers?
Yes. We cut cup carriers in two, four or other layouts, sized to the cups you use.
Do you make bottle carriers?
Yes. Bottle carriers have tall divided cells and a centre handle. Send us your bottle size and we will cut the cells to fit.
What is a gable-top carry box?
It is a closed box with a pitched roof and a handle cut into the top. It suits cakes, treats, toys and gifts.
Can I add windows to a carrier box?
Yes. We can die-cut viewing holes in the side panels so the contents show.
Will a cup carrier fit my cups?
It will if we cut it to your cups. Send the diameter and height, or a sample cup, so the holes match.
Which board is used for drinks carriers?
Most cup carriers use E or B flute single wall. Bottle and grocery carriers often use B or C flute for extra stiffness.
Can you print a logo on the handle panel?
Yes. The handle panel is often the most visible part, and we print it in one colour up to full colour CMYK.
Do carriers need glue or tape?
No. They fold and lock by hand. They arrive flat and are set up as needed.
How much do corrugated carriers cost?
Prices start from £0.25 per unit. The style, size and print set the final figure on your written quote.
How long does a carrier order take?
Allow 4 to 6 business days for production after the proof is approved, plus 2 to 3 business days for tracked delivery.
What happens if my carriers arrive damaged?
Send photos within 10 days. We will reprint the carriers or refund you.
