Edge protectors are L-shaped strips of layered kraft board that guard the corners and edges of loads, panels and boxes. We cut them to the length you need, plain or printed along the leg.
Quick answer
What are edge protectors?
Edge protectors, or angle boards, are stiff L-shaped strips of layered kraft board. They sit along the edges of a pallet, box or panel, so straps and knocks cannot crush the corners. They are cut to length and can often be used again.

What are edge protectors?
Edge protectors are rigid strips folded into an L. They hug the corner of a load. The force of a strap, a knock or a stack is then spread across a wider area.
Ours are made from layers of kraft board pressed together and folded into a firm angle. Our photos show bundles of plain brown angles, plus a close view of the folded corner. The result is light, stiff and easy to cut.
They sit alongside dividers, sheets and tape in our range of packing supplies.
What do edge protectors actually stop?
Corners are where most transit damage starts. A strap pulled tight can bite into the top boxes on a pallet. A forklift tine can clip the edge of a load. A panel dropped on its corner can split.
An angle board takes that force first. It also squares up a pallet load, so the stretch film pulls evenly instead of rounding the corners in.
- Crushed box corners under tight strapping
- Dented edges on doors, panels and worktops
- Chipped corners on framed art and mirrors
- Leaning or bulging pallet loads
- Scuffs where one item rubs against another
Who uses cardboard edge protectors?
Warehouses use them most, on every pallet that leaves the yard. Furniture makers and joiners use them on doors, cabinets and tabletops. Picture framers wrap the corners of every frame before it goes in a box.
Kitchen fitters, glaziers and sign makers order them for long flat panels. Online sellers of large wall art find they cut breakages without adding much weight to the parcel.
How do I choose leg width and length?
Length is the easy part. Measure the edge you want to cover and order to that length. A little shorter is fine, so the strip does not stick out past the load.
Leg width depends on the size of the item. Small boxes and frames need narrow legs, around 25 to 35 mm. Pallet loads and big panels need wider legs, around 40 to 50 mm, so the strap has more board to press on.
For pallets, measure the height of the load from the top of the pallet deck. The protector should run the full height of the boxes.
| Item | Typical leg width | Typical length |
|---|---|---|
| Small parcels and canvases | 25 to 35 mm | Height of each corner |
| Framed art and mirrors | 35 mm | Each side of the frame |
| Half pallet loads | 40 mm | About 1,000 mm |
| Full pallet loads | 50 mm | About 1,200 to 1,600 mm |
| Doors and long panels | 50 mm | Full length of the edge |
How do I fit edge protectors to a pallet?
Fitting takes seconds per corner once the load is built. The order matters, because the film and strap hold the boards in place.
- Build the load square, with box edges lined up at each corner.
- Start the stretch film around the base so it grips the pallet.
- Stand an edge protector against each vertical corner.
- Wrap the film up and over the protectors to hold them in.
- Lay short protectors across the top edges where straps will cross.
- Pull the straps tight over the top protectors and seal them.
Can edge protectors be printed?
Yes. A printed angle board does two jobs at once. It protects the load and tells everyone who sent it or how to handle it.
We usually print one or two colours along one leg. Common lines are a company name, a website, or a warning such as "Fragile" or "Do not stack". Our designers lay out the text free and send a digital proof first.
Print also helps at the other end. When goods-in staff see your name on the corners, they know whose load it is before reading a label. That can save a phone call when several pallets arrive at once.
Should I use edge protectors inside a box?
They work well inside a box when the item has hard corners. A framed print, for example, can sit in a box with a short angle on each corner. The angles keep the frame off the box walls, so a dent in the box does not reach the frame.
For flat art, pair them with a well-sized outer such as our art print shipping boxes. Flat cardboard sheets on each face then complete the pack.
Common mistakes with angle boards
Using protectors that are too short is the most common one. If the board stops halfway up the load, the strap still bites the top boxes. Run it the full height.
Another is fitting them after the film. Loose boards slide off as soon as the load is moved. Put them on first, then wrap.
Last, people sometimes skip the top edges. Straps cross the top of a pallet as well as the sides. Short angles under each strap stop the top layer of boxes from being cut.
Are cardboard edge protectors easy to get rid of?
Yes. Because they are kraft board, they can usually go out with your cardboard waste once removed. There is no foam or plastic to separate, which saves time at goods-in.
Many warehouses keep good ones for reuse on outgoing loads. As long as the angle is still sharp and the board is dry, a protector can go round again. Store them flat and off the floor so they stay straight.
How many edge protectors does a pallet need?
A standard pallet load takes four upright protectors, one on each vertical corner. That is the minimum for a load that will be strapped or stacked.
If straps cross the top, add a short angle under each strap on each top edge. Two straps over a square load means four short pieces, so eight in total for the pallet. Loads that will have another pallet stacked on top benefit from angles along all four top edges.
Work out the count per pallet once, then multiply by your weekly pallet numbers. That figure gives a sensible order quantity and avoids running out mid-week. For the boxes that make up the load, our double wall shipping boxes pair well with angle boards.

Edge Protectors: questions
12 answersWhat are edge protectors made from?
Ours are layers of kraft board glued together and folded into a stiff L-shaped angle.
What is the difference between an edge protector and an angle board?
There is none. Both names describe the same L-shaped strip used to guard corners and edges.
How long should a pallet edge protector be?
It should run the full height of the boxes on the pallet, measured from the pallet deck to the top of the load.
Can you cut edge protectors to any length?
Yes. Tell us the length you need and we cut each strip to it.
Which leg width should I choose?
Narrow legs of 25 to 35 mm suit boxes and frames. Wider legs of 40 to 50 mm suit pallets and large panels.
Can edge protectors be printed with our logo?
Yes. We print one or two colours along one leg, such as a company name or a handling warning.
Do edge protectors work under strapping?
Yes. They spread the strap pressure so it does not cut into the corners of the boxes.
Can I use them inside a box?
Yes. Short angles on the corners of a frame or panel keep it clear of the box walls.
Are cardboard edge protectors reusable?
Often, yes. If the angle is still sharp and the board is dry, it can be used again.
How do edge protectors arrive?
They come as straight lengths in banded bundles, ready to use.
Will I see a proof of the print?
Yes. Printed orders get a free digital proof, and we only print once you approve it.
How long does an order take?
Production takes 4 to 6 business days after proof approval. Allow 2 to 3 more business days for the tracked delivery.
