Quick answer
What are tuck top mailer boxes?
Tuck top mailer boxes are corrugated postal boxes whose lid ends in a tuck flap that slides down inside the front panel. Two dust flaps fold in under the lid to close the top corners. They suit taller products better than a flat roll end mailer.

What is a tuck top mailer box?
It is a postal box with a hinged lid that closes by sliding a tuck flap down inside the front wall. Before the lid comes down, a small dust flap folds in at each side to close off the corners.
Our photos show the style clearly: a kraft box marked on the side, with a bright red patterned print inside the lid and on every flap. Another shows a tall, dark brown version that opens at the top like a shoe box. A third is a plain charcoal box with a curved lid tab.
It sits alongside the flatter roll end printed mailer boxes in our range, but takes a deeper shape more easily.
How is a tuck top different from a roll end mailer?
A roll end mailer has thick folded end walls and a lid that wraps over them. It is best as a low, flat box, often no more than a few centimetres deep.
A tuck top uses single walls and relies on the dust flaps and tuck flap to hold the top shut. This makes it easier to build taller boxes, because the walls do not need to roll over themselves. The trade-off is that the sides are a single layer, so the board choice matters more for heavy items.
What do people send in tuck top mailers?
In short, anything that is deeper than a typical clothing mailer allows. If your product is flat, a roll end mailer will usually be cheaper and neater.
Taller mailers also help where a product must stay upright, such as a candle in a glass jar. Standing it on its base inside a snug box keeps wax and glass away from the walls.
- Shoes and slippers, where a shoe box shape is expected
- Mugs, candles and bottles that need height
- Knitwear and bulky clothing that will not fit a flat mailer
- Gift sets that stack two layers deep
- Plants in pots, wrapped and supported with paper fill
How tall can a tuck top mailer be?
There is no fixed limit, but the style works best when the height is no more than the width. Very tall, narrow tuck boxes can lean and are harder to close.
Measure your product and add a small allowance for wrapping. Send us the three inside measurements in whichever unit you use: mm, cm or inches. If you are packing several items in layers, measure the full stack rather than each item. Our guide on how to measure a box properly explains why inside sizes matter.
Shoes are a good example. A pair of adult trainers usually sits heel to toe. The length is set by the longest shoe, and the width by two soles side by side. Add tissue on top and the height grows by a centimetre or so.
Which board works best?
Because the walls are single layer, think about the weight before picking a flute. Heavier items deserve the thicker board.
If the box will be reused by the customer, for storage or a return, the thicker board also holds its shape longer. For very light goods, E flute keeps postage weight down and folds crisply. When in doubt, tell us the packed weight and we will recommend one.
| Board | Thickness | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| E flute kraft | About 1.5 mm | Light clothing, candles, small gifts |
| E flute white | About 1.5 mm | Full colour print, beauty and gift sets |
| B flute kraft or white | About 3 mm | Shoes, mugs, bottles, two-layer gift sets |
| C flute single wall | About 4 mm | Larger, heavier tuck boxes with paper fill |
Making the most of the inside print
Tuck top mailers have more inner surface on show than most mailers. When the lid is lifted, the customer sees the inside lid, both dust flaps and the top of the inner walls at once.
That is why the red chevron pattern with a simple hello in our photos works so well. A small repeat pattern covers the flaps without any fold lines showing awkwardly. Plain kraft outside with a strong colour inside is a popular way to keep the parcel low-key on the doorstep.
We print plain, one colour, two colour or full colour CMYK, inside, outside or both. Finishing choices are uncoated kraft, matte or gloss lamination, spot UV, foil and embossing. Our designers give free layout help, and you can test ideas in Design Your Box online.
How do I close a tuck top mailer for the post?
The tuck holds the lid closed, but a light seal is still wise in the post. It also tells the customer the parcel has not been opened.
Pack heavier pieces at the base and lighter ones on top. That keeps the load steady and stops the lid being pushed upwards in transit.
- Fold up the base and lock or tuck its flaps, depending on the base style.
- Fill the box, leaving the top level with the walls.
- Fold both dust flaps inwards.
- Bring the lid down and slide the tuck flap inside the front wall.
- Add a tape strip or seal sticker across the front edge for transit.
Common mistakes with tuck top boxes
Each of these is easy to avoid at the quote stage. Tell us what goes in the box and we will flag anything that looks risky.
- Choosing E flute for a heavy pair of boots or a set of bottles
- Overfilling, which pushes the tuck flap out of the front wall
- Putting key artwork on the dust flaps, which fold out of sight
- Forgetting wrapping thickness in the height measurement
- Ordering a very tall, narrow box that leans when packed
Is a tuck top mailer good for returns?
Yes, it is one of the easier styles to reuse. The lid opens without tearing and closes again with the same tuck.
If the box was sealed with a sticker, the customer can simply add a new one or a strip of tape. Printing short return steps under the lid helps, especially for shoes and clothing where returns are common. A kraft outside also hides scuffs from a second journey better than a bright white print.

Tuck Top Mailer Boxes: questions
12 answersWhat is a dust flap on a tuck top box?
It is a small flap at each top corner that folds in before the lid closes. Dust flaps fill the gaps at the sides and keep the top square.
Is a tuck top mailer the same as a shoe box?
It is a similar shape and is often used for shoes. The main difference is the tuck flap lid, which suits posting better than a loose lift-off lid.
Does a tuck top need tape?
The tuck holds the lid, but a tape strip or sticker across the front is advised for the post.
Can I print the dust flaps?
Yes. Inside print covers the lid, flaps and inner walls. A repeat pattern usually looks best on the flaps.
What board should I use for shoes?
B flute at about 3 mm is a common choice for shoes. C flute at about 4 mm suits larger, heavier boots.
How deep can the box be?
We make it to your size. The style works best when the height is no more than the width.
Can I order kraft outside and colour inside?
Yes. Plain or lightly printed kraft outside with full colour inside is one of the most popular combinations.
Is it cheaper than a roll end mailer?
It depends on size and print. Send both options on one quote request and we will price them side by side.
Can I add a logo to the dust flaps?
You can, but they fold out of sight when the box is closed. A small logo or pattern works; important text belongs on the lid.
Will I see a proof first?
Yes. A free digital proof showing every panel and flap comes before any printing.
What if boxes arrive damaged or misprinted?
Photograph any tuck top boxes that arrive faulty and send the photos within 10 days. We will reprint or refund them.
How long until the boxes arrive?
Your tuck top mailers are made in 4 to 6 business days once the proof is approved. Tracked delivery adds 2 to 3 business days.
