Custom Full Overlap Containers for Heavy and Awkward Loads

From £0.25 per unit Price confirmed on your written quote

On a full overlap container the outer flaps run the full width of the box, so the top and base get a double layer of board. We cut each order to your inside size in single or double wall.

Quick answer

What are full overlap containers?

A full overlap container, or FOL, is a slotted corrugated box whose long outer flaps are as deep as the box is wide. When closed, they overlap completely, giving extra protection on the top and bottom. It is a sturdier cousin of the regular slotted carton.

Key facts

  • Outer flaps overlap fully
  • Double board layer top and base
  • Good for long, narrow goods
  • Hand holes on request
  • From £0.25 per unit

What is a full overlap container?

A full overlap container looks like a normal four-flap carton until you close it. Instead of meeting in the middle, the two long flaps each reach right across the box and lie one on top of the other.

That overlap puts two layers of board across the whole top and the whole base. Add the short inner flaps beneath and some areas carry three layers.

The FEFCO code for the style is 0203. It is one of the heavier-duty options in our shipping and corrugated box range.

Why choose full overlap flaps?

The extra board gives the top and base far more resistance to knocks and punctures. A forklift tine, a dropped tool or a sharp corner on another parcel is less likely to break through.

The overlap also gives a bigger area for tape or staples, so the closure holds better under weight.

It sounds like a small change. On a busy loading bay, where boxes are pushed, dropped and stacked all day, it makes a real difference.

  • Double layer of board across the top and base
  • Stronger closure for heavy contents
  • Better guard against punctures from above
  • Suits long, narrow boxes where flaps would be tiny
  • Stacks well when the box is full to the top

Who orders full overlap containers?

FOL boxes suit trades that ship weight. Engineering firms use them for parts and fittings. Ceramic and tile sellers use them for flat but heavy stock. Removals firms like them for books and kitchenware.

They are also handy for long, slim goods. On a narrow box, normal flaps would barely meet. Full overlap flaps cover the end cleanly and give a firm surface to tape.

Some customers also use FOL boxes for goods that ship by pallet. The flat, double-layered top gives the next carton a firm surface to sit on, so the stack stays level.

How do I measure for a full overlap box?

Measure the goods and give us the inside length, width and height. The flap depth follows the width automatically, so you do not need to work it out.

Remember that the closed top and base are thicker than on an RSC. Inside height is not affected, but the outside height grows by an extra board layer at each end. Our page on measuring a box the right way has diagrams for each side.

  1. Measure the item or packed bundle at its widest points.
  2. Add an allowance for wrapping or edge protection.
  3. Note the weight, since FOL boxes are often for heavy goods.
  4. Send the inside size and weight with your quote request.

Single wall or double wall for an FOL?

Because full overlap boxes usually carry weight, BC double wall at about 7 mm is the most common choice. It resists crushing on the sides while the overlap protects the ends.

For lighter long boxes, C flute single wall at about 4 mm can be enough. The double layer on the top and base already adds stiffness at each end.

If you are torn between the two, tell us the heaviest item you plan to pack and how high the cartons will be stacked. We will suggest a board on your quote.

Can full overlap containers be printed?

Yes. Many trade users print size codes, handling arrows and a logo, much like the dimension marks seen on warehouse cartons. That makes picking and checking faster.

We offer one colour, two colour or full colour CMYK on kraft or white board. The large top flap is a good place for a logo, since it is the first face anyone sees. Laminations, spot UV, foil and embossing are available when the box needs to look smart too.

Every print order comes with a free digital proof and free layout help from our designers.

How should I pack and seal an FOL box?

Fold the inner flaps first, then the two long flaps over them. Tape along the exposed edge of the top flap, and carry the tape down the side panel.

For heavy goods, add tape across each end as well. Fill the box so the goods sit right up under the flaps; the double layer works best when it has support beneath.

If the goods have sharp corners, wrap them or add a layer of corrugated padding so they cannot work through the side walls.

Write or print the contents and weight on one end panel. Anyone lifting the box then knows what to expect before they bend down to pick it up.

What should I avoid when ordering full overlap containers?

Do not pick an FOL just for light, soft goods. The extra board adds weight and cost without much gain, and an RSC will do the same job.

Watch very wide boxes. Because the flaps match the width, a very wide FOL has very large flaps, which use more board. For wide, shallow goods, a folding style may fit better.

Finally, check the closed outside size against any shelving or courier size band. The extra layers add a few millimetres that can matter. Our tips on keeping UK parcel costs down explain those bands.

How does an FOL differ from an RSC?

The only change is flap depth. On an RSC the long flaps are half the box width and meet in the centre. On an FOL they are the full width and overlap completely.

That one change makes the top and base much tougher. If your boxes travel heavy, get thrown around or stand under weight, the full overlap is usually worth it.

Both styles fold from flat in the same way, so your packing team will not need to learn anything new when you switch.

  1. Send inside size, quantity and the weight of the contents.
  2. Choose board and print.
  3. Approve the quote and the free digital proof.
  4. We cut, crease and glue your boxes.
  5. Any misprint or damage reported within 10 days with photos is reprinted or refunded.

Full Overlap Containers: questions

12 answers
What does full overlap mean on a box?

It means the two long outer flaps are as deep as the box is wide. When closed, they overlap across the whole top and base.

What is the FEFCO code for a full overlap container?

The full overlap slotted container is FEFCO 0203.

Is a full overlap box stronger than an RSC?

The top and base are stronger, because they have a double layer of board. The side walls are the same as an RSC made from the same board.

Which board do you suggest for full overlap boxes?

BC double wall at about 7 mm is the usual choice for heavy loads. C flute single wall suits lighter long items.

Are full overlap boxes good for long items?

Yes. On narrow boxes, full overlap flaps give a solid end to tape, where normal flaps would barely meet.

Can I add hand holes to an FOL box?

Yes. We can die-cut hand holes in the ends for easier carrying.

Can you print size codes on the box?

Yes. Many customers print dimensions, handling arrows and a logo so stock is easy to identify.

Do full overlap containers use more board?

Yes, a little, because the outer flaps are twice as deep. That is why they cost slightly more than an RSC of the same size.

How should I seal a full overlap box?

Tape along the edge of the top flap and down the sides. For heavy goods, add tape across each end too.

What do full overlap containers cost?

Prices start from £0.25 per unit. Your written quote confirms the figure for your size, board and print.

How long will my full overlap boxes take?

Production takes 4 to 6 business days after you approve the proof, then tracked delivery takes 2 to 3 business days.

What if my full overlap boxes arrive damaged?

Send us photos within 10 days. We will reprint the order or issue a refund.
