Quick answer
What are regular slotted containers?
A regular slotted container, or RSC, is a corrugated box made from one sheet with four flaps at the top and four at the bottom. All flaps are the same depth, so the two long outer flaps meet in the middle when closed. It is sealed with tape.

What is a regular slotted container?
The regular slotted container is the box most people picture when they hear the word carton. It is cut and creased from a single sheet of corrugated board, then glued along one corner.
Each end has four flaps. The two long flaps are half the box width deep, so they meet neatly in the centre once folded down. The short flaps sit underneath them.
Packaging buyers often call it an RSC, and the industry code for the style is FEFCO 0201. It sits at the heart of our range of corrugated shipping boxes because it suits so many goods.
Why is the RSC so widely used?
The design wastes very little board. A rectangle of corrugated, a few slots and some creases are all it takes, which keeps the unit price down.
It is also quick to pack. Staff fold the bottom, tape it, drop the goods in and tape the top. There are no tabs to line up and no locks to find.
- Low board use for the space it gives you
- Packs fast by hand on a busy bench
- Stacks squarely on pallets and shelves
- Easy to print on all four side panels
- Works in single wall or double wall board
Who buys regular slotted containers?
RSCs suit anyone who packs in volume. Warehouses use them for picking and dispatch. Producers use them to send cases of goods to shops and wholesalers.
They are also a common choice for house moves, office relocations and archive storage, where people want plain, tough cartons in a few set sizes.
Online sellers use them for heavier orders that would strain a folding mailer, such as homeware, books or bottled goods.
Because the shape is so familiar, RSCs are also easy for temporary staff to pack. Nobody needs training to fold a four-flap carton and tape it shut.
What size RSC do I need?
Start with the inside space your goods need. Lay the product, or a full case of it, on a table and measure the length, width and height.
Allow room for any wrapping. A carton holding loose items padded with paper needs more allowance than one holding a single boxed product.
Remember that an RSC has a double layer of flap at the top and bottom where the outer flaps rest on the inner ones. That does not reduce the inside height, but it does add a little to the outside.
- Measure your product or packed case at its widest points.
- Add 5 to 25 mm per side for wrapping, depending on fragility.
- Give us the result as the inside length, width and height.
- Tell us the rough weight so we can suggest a board.
Which board should an RSC be made from?
For most loads, single wall C flute does the job. At around 4 mm thick it has good cushioning and stacks well for the weight of an average parcel.
Choose BC double wall, at around 7 mm, when the carton is heavy, will be stacked several high, or will be handled many times. B flute single wall is thinner and folds more tightly, which helps for smaller cartons.
Our guide to corrugated board flutes compares each grade side by side.
| Load | Suggested board | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Light goods, single parcels | B flute single wall | Thin, neat folds, less bulk |
| Mixed parcels and stock | C flute single wall | Good cushioning for its weight |
| Heavy cases or high stacks | BC double wall | Twin flutes resist crushing |
| Long storage or moves | BC double wall | Holds shape over repeated handling |
Can a regular slotted container be printed?
Yes. A plain brown carton is the standard, but many customers add a logo, handling marks or product details to the side panels.
We print one colour, two colour or full colour CMYK. A white outer liner makes colours brighter and gives full colour artwork a cleaner base than kraft.
For a carton that doubles as a display, matte or gloss lamination, spot UV, foil stamping or embossing can be added. Our designers will help set out the panels, and you sign off a free digital proof first.
How do I seal and pack an RSC?
Close the short flaps first, then the long ones, and run tape along the seam where the long flaps meet. Carry the tape a short way down each end panel so the seam cannot lift.
For heavy cartons, add a strip of tape across each end seam too. This H-pattern holds the flaps flat and stops corners splitting.
Fill empty space at the top before you close the box. A carton with a void above the goods can cave in when another is stacked on it.
If the carton will be opened by a buyer with a knife, keep sharp tools in mind. Pack soft goods a little below the flaps so a blade drawn along the seam does not reach them.
What goes wrong with RSC orders?
The usual problem is measuring the outside of an old carton and sending that as the new inside size. The new box then comes out one board thickness too big on every side.
Another is ordering a long, deep carton in thin board. Large panels flex more, so bigger RSCs often need double wall even when the contents are light. If you need a guide to standard shapes, see our notes on common cardboard box sizes in the UK.
Lastly, people sometimes choose an RSC when the product would be better in a style with a full lid. If you need to open and close the box often, ask us about alternatives.
When should I choose a different slotted style?
The RSC is a sound default, but it is not the only slotted carton. A half slotted container drops the top flaps so a separate lid can sit on top. A full overlap container has long flaps that run the whole width for extra strength on the top and base.
If you are unsure, tell us what goes inside and how the box will be handled. We will point you to the style that fits.

Regular Slotted Containers: questions
12 answersWhat does RSC stand for?
RSC stands for regular slotted container. It is the standard four-flap corrugated carton, also known by the code FEFCO 0201.
Do the flaps on an RSC overlap?
No. The long outer flaps meet in the middle of the box without overlapping. If you want full overlap, ask about a full overlap container.
Are regular slotted containers glued?
Yes. One corner has a glued manufacturer's joint, so the box opens straight from flat. The flaps are closed with tape.
Can I get white regular slotted containers?
Yes. We make RSCs with a white outer liner as well as brown kraft. White is a good base for full colour print.
What thickness of board is used for RSCs?
Most use C flute single wall at about 4 mm. Heavy or stacked loads suit BC double wall at about 7 mm.
Can you print on all four sides of an RSC?
Yes. All four side panels can carry print, and the flaps can be printed too if your design needs it.
Can I add dividers to a regular slotted container?
Yes. Corrugated dividers can be made to fit, which suits bottles, jars and other items that need to stay apart.
How do I measure for an RSC?
Measure your goods, add an allowance for wrapping, and send us the inside length, width and height. We work out the outside size.
Are RSCs good for moving house?
Yes. Plain double wall RSCs are a sensible choice for house moves because they stack well and take tape firmly.
How quickly can I get regular slotted containers?
Your cartons are made in 4 to 6 business days from proof sign-off. They then travel by tracked delivery for 2 to 3 business days.
What is the price of a regular slotted container?
Prices start from £0.25 per unit. Your written quote confirms the price for your size, board and print.
What happens if my RSCs arrive damaged?
Send us photos within 10 days of delivery. We will reprint the order or give you a refund.
