What are compostable mailers?
Compostable mailers are mailing bags made from a film designed to break down in suitable composting conditions. In the hand they feel soft and slightly matt, a little like a standard polythene bag.
They work the same way. You fold the goods in, peel the liner off the flap and press it shut. The bag is opaque, so nobody can see what is inside.
Our photos show the usual look: a deep green, black or white bag printed with the brand name and a short message about disposal.
Who orders compostable mailing bags?
Mostly clothing and lifestyle brands that post soft goods and want to move away from conventional plastic bags. Many switch over when a reorder of their old bags is due, so the change costs nothing extra in wasted stock.
- Fashion and activewear labels posting garments
- Swimwear and lingerie brands that need privacy and light parcels
- Kids' clothing shops sending folded outfits
- Homeware sellers posting towels, throws and cushion covers
- Subscription clubs sending socks or textiles each month
What does compostable mean for a mailing bag?
It means the film is designed to break down into natural matter under the right conditions. Ordinary plastic, by contrast, lasts for a very long time.
How quickly that happens, and whether a home compost heap is enough, depends on the exact material. It also depends on local facilities where your customers live.
For that reason we confirm the material grade and the disposal guidance on your written quote. Print only the claims that paperwork supports, and keep the wording plain.
How do I choose a compostable mailer size?
Sizes are given flat, as width by length. The flap is extra, so it does not count towards the space for your goods.
Fold your item as you would pack it and measure it. Add its thickness to the width and the length, then add around 20 mm so it slides in easily.
A T-shirt folded to 220 × 300 × 15 mm sits well in a 250 × 350 mm bag. For more detail, read our notes on measuring before ordering.
| Folded item | Typical folded size | Bag to try |
|---|---|---|
| Swimsuit or underwear set | 150 × 200 × 10 mm | 200 × 300 mm |
| T-shirt | 220 × 300 × 15 mm | 250 × 350 mm |
| Shirt or light jumper | 260 × 340 × 30 mm | 300 × 400 mm |
| Hoodie | 300 × 380 × 50 mm | 350 × 450 mm |
How can compostable mailers be printed?
Artwork can run in a single ink, in two inks or in full CMYK, on one face or both. A solid brand colour flooding the whole bag is a popular look, as the dark green and black bags in our photos show.
Most brands add a short line about what to do with the bag after use. Keep it clear and honest, for example how to dispose of it locally.
Leave a plain panel for the address label, and avoid fine detail near the seams and the flap. Ink can look broken across the heat-sealed edges.
How do I pack and store compostable mailers?
Compostable film needs a little more care in storage than standard plastic. Treat your stock like paper goods.
- Store cartons of bags somewhere cool and dry, away from radiators and windows.
- Use older stock first, so bags do not sit on the shelf for long.
- Fold the item to fit the bag, with no sharp edges pointing out.
- Smooth the bag to push the air out before you seal it.
- Remove the release liner and close the flap edge to edge.
- Put the label on a smooth, flat area of the bag.
Which mistakes should I avoid with compostable mailers?
Over-claiming is the big one. Words like home compostable or fully plastic-free must match the material paperwork, or you risk misleading customers.
Ordering a year of stock at once can also cause trouble. Compostable film is best used within a sensible period, so order in step with your sales.
Using a mailing bag for hard or sharp items is another. Buckles, glass and boxed electronics should go in a carton instead. A sharp corner can pierce film in a sorting machine, even when the bag is the right size.
Compostable mailer, paper mailer or box?
A compostable mailer keeps the soft, waterproof feel of a plastic bag. A kraft paper mailer with a seal strip gives a dry, papery feel and takes uncoated print well.
For anything that needs a rigid shell, a kraft box is the better choice, like the printed one in our photos. Many brands use bags for clothing and boxes for gifts or accessories.
Postage is usually lower for a bag than a box of the same footprint, because the bag is thinner and lighter. A mixed range of bags and boxes, printed to match, keeps the brand look the same whichever format a customer receives.
Can compostable mailers be used for returns?
Yes. A second adhesive strip lets the customer reseal the same bag to send a return. A tear line makes the first opening clean.
It is worth doing for clothing, where returns are common. Ask for it on your quote, as it changes the unit price slightly.
How do brands talk about compostable packaging honestly?
Customers read packaging claims closely, and vague green wording can do more harm than good. The safest messages are short, specific and easy to check.
Say what the bag is made of in plain words, and tell people what to do with it. If local food waste or garden waste collections will not accept it, say so rather than leaving people to guess.
Avoid percentages and badges unless your material paperwork names them. When we confirm the grade on your quote, use that wording as the basis for anything you print.
Many brands put the disposal message on the back of the bag and keep the front for the logo. That way the parcel still looks clean on a doorstep, and the advice is there when the bag is empty.

Compostable Mailers: questions
12 answersAre compostable mailers waterproof?
They resist rain in the post much like a standard mailing bag. They are not meant for long storage outdoors or in damp places.
Can I put a compostable mailer in my home compost?
That depends on the exact material. We confirm the grade and its disposal guidance on your written quote, so you can tell customers clearly.
Are compostable mailers see-through?
No. They are opaque, so the contents stay private.
Can compostable mailers be printed all over?
Yes. Both faces can be flooded with a brand colour, with a logo and message printed on top.
How long can I store compostable mailers?
Keep them cool, dry and out of sunlight, and use older stock first. Order in step with your sales rather than a long way ahead.
What size compostable mailer fits a hoodie?
A folded hoodie often fits a 350 × 450 mm bag. If yours is bulky, measure it folded and size up when in doubt.
Do compostable mailers have a returns option?
Yes. Ask for a dual-strip version: the customer tears the bag open, then uses the spare adhesive band to send it back.
Can I print a disposal message on the bag?
Yes, and most brands do. Keep the wording plain and only state what the material paperwork supports.
Are compostable mailers good for shoes or boxed items?
Not usually. Rigid or heavy items are better in a corrugated box.
How do compostable mailers close?
With a self-adhesive strip under a peel-off liner on the flap.
How long does an order of compostable mailers take?
Plan on 4–6 business days to print after you okay the proof. Shipping, tracked all the way, adds 2–3 business days.
Can I see my design before the bags are printed?
Yes. You get a digital proof by email at no cost, and the press does not start until you reply to approve it.
