Quick answer

What are media mailer boxes?

A media mailer box is a printed, tuck-front postal box used to send PR kits, press samples and launch packs. It usually carries full colour artwork outside and a message or pattern inside the lid. Most hold several items in a fitted insert so the kit arrives looking as planned.

What is a media mailer box?

A media mailer is a postal box built for presentation. It goes to journalists, creators and partners, and it is often filmed or photographed as it opens.

Structurally it is a tuck-front mailer. The lid hinges at the back, two dust flaps fold in, and the front tucks into the base. The side walls are doubled over, which keeps the box square even when the kit inside is heavy.

What sets it apart is the print. Outside, the artwork usually wraps every face. Inside, the lid carries a greeting, a pattern or a second colour.

Who sends media mailer boxes?

Anyone who needs a first impression to travel well. Often the box will be seen by far more people than the one who opens it. The photos on this page show the kind of kits we mean: bold patterns, a named campaign and a box that looks finished on every side.

  • Beauty and skincare brands sending new ranges to creators
  • Drinks and food start-ups posting launch samples to press
  • PR agencies building kits for several clients at once
  • Publishers sending advance copies with extras inside
  • Event teams posting welcome packs to speakers and guests
  • Brands thanking partners or staff with a seasonal gift

What inside size does a PR kit need?

Lay out every item the way you want it seen when the lid opens. Measure that group, not each item on its own.

Then decide on the insert. If the items sit in a die-cut card tray, the tray sets the inside size, so measure the tray footprint and its height.

Leave about 5 mm of headroom over the tallest item for tissue or a note. Too much space and the kit slides; too little and the lid bows.

Our overview of common UK box sizes is a handy starting point if you have not settled on a footprint yet.

Which board works best for printed media mailers?

White board is the usual pick, because full colour artwork looks brighter on a white liner. Kraft gives a warmer, muted result that suits natural or craft-led brands.

Fine 1.5 mm E flute takes print most sharply and folds tidily. Choose 3 mm B flute when glass bottles or a heavier kit need more cushion.

What print and finish options do media mailers have?

Most media mailers are printed full colour CMYK on the outside, with a second print run on the inside. One or two colour print is also possible if the design is simple.

Finishes add texture people notice on camera. A soft matte laminate keeps colours calm, gloss makes them pop, and spot UV picks out a logo.

Foil stamping and embossing work best on a single feature, such as a brand name on the lid. For printing on both faces, see our page on double sided printed mailer boxes.

Do I need an insert in a media mailer?

Usually, yes. An insert holds each item in a set spot, so the kit opens the same way every time.

Card inserts suit light products and can be printed too. Corrugated inserts give more grip for bottles, jars and anything with weight.

  1. List every item and its size, including caps and pumps.
  2. Sketch how the items should sit when the lid opens.
  3. Tell us whether the insert should be printed or plain.
  4. We size the insert first, then the box around it.
  5. Check both on the digital proof before approving.

How should I pack a PR kit for posting?

Pack one sample kit first and shake it gently. If anything moves, add tissue or shredded paper before packing the rest.

Place a printed card on top so it is the first thing seen. Close the lid, then add a sticker across the front tuck for a sealed finish.

For long trips, nest the media mailer inside a plain outer carton. The printed finish then arrives free of scuffs and courier labels.

What mistakes should I avoid with media mailers?

Designing the outside and forgetting the inside is common. The inside of the lid is the first thing people see, so plan it as a main panel.

Another is placing key text across a fold line. Keep logos and words within the panels shown on your proof. Also check the lid half open, as that is often the frame people film.

Ordering the box before the products are final also causes trouble. A late change to a bottle size can leave the insert too tight.

Finally, dark all-over print shows scuffs. A matte laminate helps, and so does a plain outer box for transit.

How long does a media mailer order take?

Plan backwards from your send date, because press days and influencer post dates rarely move. After you approve the proof, we need 4–6 business days to print and cut.

Our tracked service adds 2–3 business days on top. Add time for artwork changes, as kits often go through a few rounds with the client.

A simple plan works well: brief and sizes in week one, proof rounds in week two, then making and delivery. If the send date is fixed, tell us when you ask for a quote and we will flag anything that looks tight.

Media mailer or a box inside a box?

Some launches use a printed media mailer on its own. Others put a smaller printed box, such as a two piece lid gift box, inside a plain outer.

A single media mailer is lighter and costs less to post. It also gives a quick reveal, because the printed lid is the outside of the parcel.

The box-inside-a-box route protects the printed finish better and feels more formal. It suits high-value kits and anything with a long journey ahead.

If you are unsure, ask us to quote both styles side by side. Compare the unit price, the packed weight and the postage band before you decide which one the campaign needs.

How do I order media mailer boxes?

Tell us the kit contents, the size you have in mind, the board and the print. You can build a starting shape in Design Your Box, or just send a brief.

Kits like these are priced from £0.25 a box, with each order pinned down in a written quote. The proof is free, and so is help from our designers with layout.

Delivery costs you nothing whether the boxes go to London, Toronto, Sydney or New York. Got a misprint, a dent or a fault? Photograph it and tell us inside 10 days. A reprint or a refund follows, your choice.

Media Mailer Boxes: questions

12 answers
What makes a media mailer different from a plain mailer box?

The structure is the same tuck-front mailer. A media mailer is printed all over, often inside too, and usually holds a fitted insert for a PR or launch kit.

Can you print the inside lid of a media mailer?

Yes. Inside print covers the lid and walls and can be one colour, two colours or full colour.

Should a PR kit box be white or kraft?

White board makes full colour artwork brighter. Kraft gives a warmer, earthy look and suits simpler designs.

Can each item in my kit have its own slot?

Yes. We can make a die-cut card or corrugated insert with a slot for each product.

Which finish looks best on camera?

Matte lamination cuts glare under ring lights. Spot UV or foil on the logo adds a detail that catches light as the lid opens.

Can you deliver media mailers straight to UK creators?

Yes. We can deliver the finished boxes to a creator's UK address on a tracked service at no charge.

How deep should a media mailer be?

Most kits fit in 80 to 120 mm of depth. Measure your tallest item plus about 5 mm for tissue or a card.

Will dark print scuff in the post?

It can. A matte laminate helps, and for longer journeys we suggest packing the printed box inside a plain outer carton.

Do media mailers need glue to assemble?

No. They arrive flat and fold into shape by hand, with the front tucking into the base.

Can your designers help with the kit artwork?

Yes. Layout help is free, and you see a digital proof before anything is printed.

How far ahead should I order for a launch date?

Allow time for proofing, then 4–6 business days to make the boxes and 2–3 business days for tracked delivery.

Can I post a media mailer without an outer box?

Yes, many people do for UK sends. An outer carton is worth it if the box is dark, glossy or travelling a long way.
