Quick answer

What are vinyl record boxes?

Vinyl record boxes are flat corrugated mailers or cartons made to fit record sleeves closely. The snug fit and stiff walls stop the sleeve bending and the corners denting. Larger cartons hold bulk orders and box sets.

What is a vinyl record box?

It is a corrugated box or mailer cut to the square shape of a record sleeve. The record lies flat, and the walls stay rigid so the sleeve cannot bow or crease.

Our photos show the main types. Flat LP mailers fold around the record, and a stiff board envelope carries a printed thank-you line. You can also see stacks of square kraft mailers ready to pack.

For bigger orders there are plain and printed cartons too. Those carry a shop restock or a pile of records going to a fair.

Who buys record mailers?

Anyone posting vinyl regularly. Record buyers are careful collectors, and a dented corner or seam split can mean a return.

Labels and bands tend to want print, because the mailer is the first thing a fan sees. Shops dealing in second-hand stock usually stick with plain kraft and spend the saving on stiffer board.

Pressing plants and distributors have their own needs. They move test pressings and finished stock in larger lots, so they often order both mailers and bulk cartons together.

  • Independent record shops with a web store
  • Small labels shipping new releases
  • Bands selling direct to fans
  • Second-hand and collector dealers
  • Pressing plants returning test pressings
  • Subscription clubs posting a record each month

What size box do I need for a 12 inch record?

A standard 12 inch sleeve measures close to 315 mm square. Add a few millimetres so the record slides in easily without room to move. Around 320 mm square inside is a common starting point.

Depth is where formats differ most. A single LP needs very little, while a gatefold or a double album needs more. Our UK cardboard box sizes guide covers how inside and outside sizes relate.

  1. Measure the outer sleeve, including any shrink wrap.
  2. Stack the records exactly as they will be posted.
  3. Measure the stack depth, adding any pads you will use.
  4. Add 3 to 5 mm to length and width.
  5. Send the final inside size with your quantity.

Which board keeps records flat?

Stiffness matters more than thickness for a single LP. E flute keeps the mailer slim, and fold-in pads add rigidity where it counts. For several records or heavier sets, B flute is stronger.

Bulk cartons for shop restocks are a different job. They carry real weight, so BC double wall is the usual choice.

Heat is worth a thought as well. Board will not stop a parcel left in a hot van from warping a disc, so advise buyers to open deliveries promptly in summer.

FormatSuggested boardWhy
Single 7 inchE flute, about 1.5 mmLight and slim for small parcels
Single 12 inch LPE flute with pads, or B fluteStiff, flat and easy to fold
Double LP or box setB flute, about 3 mmExtra strength at the corners
Bulk restock of 20 or moreBC double wall, about 7 mmCarries heavy, dense loads

Should the record travel in or out of its sleeve?

Many sellers slide the disc out of the outer jacket and post it in its inner sleeve behind it. This stops the disc pushing through the seam of the jacket if the parcel is dropped on its edge.

Whichever way you choose, keep the record flat and centred. Add a pad on each side of the stack if the mailer has any spare depth.

Never post records standing on edge in a deep box. That is how corners crush and discs warp.

Can I print my label artwork on the mailer?

Yes. Print can be plain, one colour, two colour or full colour CMYK, on the outside, the inside or both. A large square mailer is a good canvas for album art or a label logo.

Bands often print the release artwork on the outside for limited editions. Shops tend to print a logo and a short line inside, like the thank-you envelope in our photos. Plan it in Design Your Box first.

  • Uncoated kraft with a single black ink
  • Matte lamination for album art reproductions
  • Gloss lamination on bright full colour designs
  • Foil stamping for a label name on a box set
  • Embossing or spot UV for special editions

Do you make boxes for vinyl box sets?

Yes. A box set needs a deeper carton sized around the set's outer case, with room for pads above and below. These usually ship in B flute or double wall.

If the set has its own printed slipcase, a plain outer carton is often enough. If it does not, a printed outer box can double as the presentation case.

Coloured and picture discs deserve the same care as black vinyl, and often more. They are usually limited runs, so collectors check them closely on arrival.

What else can go in a record mailer?

Plenty of sellers add a few extras alongside the record. A poster, a lyric sheet, a sticker or a download card all fit flat inside an LP mailer without changing its size.

Bundles with a T-shirt or a cassette need more depth. Tell us everything that goes in. We will size the mailer so the record still sits flat on the base, with softer items on top.

For merch-heavy orders, a slightly deeper mailer with a pad over the record often works better than squeezing everything into the slimmest size.

What causes damaged records in the post?

Most seam splits and bent corners come down to the same few habits. Watch out for these.

  • Posting records in a box that is too large
  • Leaving the disc inside the jacket on a heavy parcel
  • Using a soft padded bag instead of board
  • Skipping pads when the mailer has spare depth
  • Packing records upright in a deep carton

Can one mailer fit several formats?

It can, but a fitted mailer for each format is safer. A 7 inch single rattling around a 12 inch mailer will likely arrive with dented corners.

If you only want one size, use the 12 inch mailer and add stiff pads cut to fill the gap. Many shops order two sizes, one for LPs and one for singles, and that covers almost every order.

Vinyl Record Boxes: questions

12 answers
What size mailer fits a 12 inch LP?

Around 320 × 320 mm inside is a common size for a single 12 inch LP. Send your sleeve size and we will set the exact fit.

Can you make mailers for 7 inch singles?

Yes. A 7 inch mailer is often around 190 mm square inside, depending on the sleeve.

Will a double album fit in one mailer?

Yes, if the mailer depth allows for the gatefold or both records. Tell us the stack thickness when you ask for a quote.

Should I remove the record from its jacket for posting?

Many sellers do, placing the disc behind the jacket in the mailer. It helps stop seam splits on rough journeys.

Do record mailers need pads?

Pads add stiffness and fill any spare depth. They are worth using on single LP mailers and any box with extra room.

Which board is best for posting vinyl?

E flute with pads or B flute suits most single and double LPs. Bulk cartons are better in BC double wall.

Can you print album art on the mailer?

Yes, full colour CMYK print covers the whole mailer if you like. Inside print is available as well.

Can you box a multi-disc collector's set?

Yes. We size a deeper carton around the box set with space for pads.

Are record mailers delivered flat?

Yes, they come flat and fold around the record by hand.

How long will my record mailers take?

Production runs 4–6 business days after proof approval. Delivery by tracked service then takes 2–3 business days.

What if my mailers arrive misprinted?

Send photos within 10 days of any misprint, damage or defect. We will either reprint or refund the affected mailers.

Can I get help laying out my label artwork?

Yes, our designers offer free layout help. You will see the result on your free digital proof before anything is printed.
