Quick answer
What are book shipping boxes?
Book shipping boxes are corrugated cartons sized around one book or a stack of books. A snug fit stops the load sliding, which is what dents corners and splits spines. We make them in kraft or printed board to your inside measurements.
Key facts
- Sized to the book, not stock
- E, B or C flute single wall
- BC double wall for heavy stacks
- Kraft or full colour print

What is a book shipping box?
It is a corrugated box cut to fit a book or a stack of books with very little gap. Books are dense and heavy for their size. If they can slide, the corners take every knock on the way.
Our photos show two common shapes. One is a plain kraft carton with flaps that open from the top. The other is a slimmer, taller printed box that holds a single title upright, a bit like a sleeve.
Both are made from fluted board rather than thin card. The fluting is the wavy layer inside the wall, and it acts as a cushion when the parcel is dropped or squeezed.
Who orders boxes for books?
Most orders come from people who post books every week and want them to arrive looking new. Book buyers notice a bumped corner straight away, so the box matters more than with most products.
Collectors are the hardest to please. A first edition with a creased jacket loses much of its appeal. That is why dealers tend to order a close-fitting box for every title they list.
- Independent bookshops selling online
- Self-published authors posting signed copies
- Small presses sending advance copies to critics
- Book subscription clubs with a monthly title
- Second-hand and rare book dealers
- Schools and libraries moving stock between sites
How do I measure a book for a box?
Measure the book itself, not the box you use now. Take the longest edge, the width across the cover and the thickness of the spine. For a stack, measure the stack as it will sit in the box.
Then add a small allowance so the book goes in without forcing. Our guide on taking inside box measurements explains the difference between inside and outside sizes.
- Measure length along the spine side, in millimetres.
- Measure width across the front cover.
- Measure depth: one spine, or the full stack height.
- Add 3 to 5 mm to length and width for sliding the book in.
- Add depth for any tissue wrap or card you put on top.
- Send us those inside measurements with your enquiry.
Which board is best for posting books?
Weight decides the board more than size does. A single paperback is light, so thin E flute does the job and keeps the parcel slim. Hardbacks and stacks need thicker walls.
Unsure whether to pick one layer of fluting or two? The comparison on choosing single or double wall board sets out where each one earns its place.
| What you post | Suggested board | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One paperback | E flute, about 1.5 mm | Light, slim and prints cleanly |
| One hardback | B flute, about 3 mm | Better corner protection for boards |
| Three to six books | C flute, about 4 mm | More cushioning for a heavier box |
| Boxed sets or bulk orders | BC double wall, about 7 mm | Holds its shape under real weight |
Should the box fit tightly around the book?
Yes, as close as you can while still getting the book in. Empty space lets the book build up speed inside the parcel. A tight fit means the box takes the knock, not the cover.
Where titles vary in size, pick one box for the largest book in that group. Fill the spare space with a corrugated pad or crumpled paper so smaller books cannot move.
Height matters too. A box that is too deep lets the book lift and drop each time the parcel is turned over. Keep the depth close to the spine, plus any wrap.
Can I print my bookshop name on the box?
Print comes plain, in one or two colours, or in full colour CMYK. Many shops print a simple logo on kraft, which reads well and keeps the cost down. Publishers often go full colour to match a cover or a series.
Inside print works well for book clubs. A short line under the flaps, such as the month's title, makes opening the parcel part of the read. You can lay this out in Design Your Box before asking for a price.
- Uncoated kraft for a plain, bookish look
- Matte lamination for a soft printed finish
- Gloss lamination where colours need to stand out
- Spot UV or foil stamping on a logo
- Embossing for a raised name on a premium box
How should I pack books so they arrive flat?
Lay books flat, never on their spines. Put the heaviest book at the bottom of a stack. Keep dust jackets on and add a sheet of paper over any glossy cover to stop scuffing.
For a single title in a tall box, slide it in spine first so the opening edge faces the top flaps. Tape the flaps along the middle seam and across both ends.
Signed copies deserve one extra step. Slip the book into a paper sleeve before boxing so ink on the title page cannot rub against anything.
What mistakes damage books in the post?
Most damage comes from boxes that are too big or too thin. These are the errors we see most often in the photos customers send us.
- Using one large stock box for every order size
- Choosing thin board for heavy hardback stacks
- Standing books on their spines inside the box
- Leaving loose space at the ends of the carton
- Measuring the old box instead of the book
Is a book box better than a padded envelope?
For anything thicker than a slim paperback, usually yes. A padded envelope bends, so the corners of a hardback can punch through or fold over. A box keeps its shape when other parcels are stacked on top.
Envelopes still have a place for thin, light titles where postage size matters most. Many sellers use both: envelopes for pamphlets and zines, boxes for everything with a board cover.
A box also gives you a surface to print on. That turns a plain parcel into something that carries your shop name to the reader's door.
Do you make boxes for a series or set?
Yes. A boxed set needs a carton sized around the whole set, plus room for any slipcase. We can match print across several sizes so a series looks the same on the shelf and in the post.
If you post sets alongside single titles, it often makes sense to order two or three sizes at once. That way every order has a box that fits.
For larger trade orders between shops, see our corrugated and shipping box range. It covers plain cartons for moving bulk stock.

Book Shipping Boxes: questions
12 answersWhat size box do I need for a paperback?
A standard paperback often fits a box around 205 × 140 × 35 mm inside. Send us the actual book size and we will cut the box to it.
Is single wall strong enough for hardbacks?
For one or two hardbacks, B or C flute single wall usually works well. For heavy stacks or boxed sets, BC double wall is the safer choice.
Can you make a slim box for one book?
Yes. E flute keeps the box thin while still guarding the corners. It suits paperbacks and slim hardbacks.
Do book boxes come flat?
Yes, every box arrives flat. You fold it up by hand and close the flaps with tape.
Can I print a reading note inside the flaps?
Yes, inside print is an option. Book clubs often print the month's title or a short message there.
How do I stop books sliding in the box?
Order the box close to the book size. Fill any spare gap with a corrugated pad or paper so nothing shifts.
Can I order several sizes for different titles?
Yes. Many shops order two or three sizes together so every order has a close fit. Each size gets its own proof.
What print suits a small bookshop?
A one colour logo on kraft is simple and clear. Full colour CMYK suits publishers who want to match a cover or series.
Can you add foil to a book box?
Yes, foil stamping is one of our finishes. It works well on a shop name or a series title.
How quickly are book boxes made?
We make them in 4–6 business days from proof approval. They then reach you by tracked delivery in 2–3 business days.
What if the book boxes arrive misprinted?
Send photos within 10 days of a misprint, damage or defect. We reprint or refund the boxes affected.
Can you send book boxes straight to an author's home?
Yes. Give us any UK address and the boxes go there tracked, with no delivery charge.
