Quick answer
What are ear lock mailer boxes?
An ear lock mailer box is a one-piece corrugated mailer with two side tabs, or ears, on its lid. The ears push into slots in the folded side walls and hold the lid closed. Those walls fold over twice, which gives the box thick, sturdy edges.

What is an ear lock mailer box?
It is a folding corrugated mailer cut from one flat sheet. When the lid comes down, two small ears on its sides push into slots in the side walls and lock in place.
The front flap then tucks in to finish the closure. The result is a box that feels firm when shut, with no tape showing. It sits within our wider range of mailer and postal boxes as the style most often chosen for gifts.
Why do gift brands choose locking ears?
A plain tuck lid relies on the front flap alone. If the box is squeezed, the lid can spring up at the corners.
The ears add two more fixing points. They stop the lid lifting at the sides, so the box keeps a crisp shape on a shelf or a desk. Because nothing is glued, the customer can open and close it again and keep it for storage. That is a big reason the style is popular for PR mailings and gift sets, where the box is part of the present.
The common thread is that the box will be seen, opened slowly and often kept.
- Brands sending influencer and press packages
- Gift shops selling curated boxes for birthdays, Easter or Valentine's Day
- Coffee roasters and tea sellers packing tasting sets
- Candle and home fragrance makers
- Corporate teams sending welcome kits to new starters
Does an ear lock box make a good unboxing?
It is one of the better styles for it. The lid lifts in one movement and stays upright on its hinge, so the inside print is on show straight away.
Because the walls are folded rather than cut, there are no rough edges facing the person opening it. A sheet of tissue, a printed card on top and a snug insert are usually all you need. Several of our photos show a lid message in a single colour against a printed inner pattern. That kind of contrast reads well in a phone video, which matters if you send boxes to creators.
How strong are the double side walls?
On an ear lock mailer, each side wall is folded over on itself before the lid closes. That means two layers of board along both sides, with a rounded fold on top.
This makes the sides noticeably stiffer than a single panel. It also hides the raw edge of the board, which gives a neat finish when the box is open. We do not quote load ratings, so if your product is heavy, tell us the weight and we will suggest a board.
Which board should I pick?
The board sets the wall thickness, the print surface and how the box feels when handled. Read our guide to corrugated flute sizes if you want more detail.
| Board | Thickness | Feel and use |
|---|---|---|
| E flute, white | About 1.5 mm | Smooth, bright print for gift brands |
| E flute, kraft | About 1.5 mm | Natural brown, suits one or two colour print |
| B flute, kraft or white | About 3 mm | Thicker walls for jars, bottles and heavier sets |
| Black printed E flute | About 1.5 mm | Full colour flood for a dark, premium look |
What size ear lock mailer do I need?
Start with the inside size. Measure the product, or the product plus any insert, and give us length, width and height in mm, cm or inches.
Leave room for tissue or shred if you use it, but not so much that items move. The double side walls take up a little space at the top edge, so allow a few millimetres of extra height for tall items. If you are unsure, send us the product size and we will work out the box for you.
Printing and finishes for gift mailers
We print plain, one colour, two colour or full colour CMYK, outside, inside or both. A repeat pattern on the inside walls with a message on the lid is a common layout in our photos.
On the finishing side you can choose uncoated kraft, a matte or gloss laminate, spot UV, foil or embossing. Foil on the lid of a black box is a favourite for gift work. Try layouts in Design Your Box before you order, and our designers will help set up the files for free.
Print on an ear lock box wraps around folds more than on a flat carton. The side walls roll over the top edge, so a band of colour there shows both inside and out. Our proof marks every fold line. You can see where a pattern will break or a logo sits too close to an edge.
Can ear lock boxes be reused or returned?
They can. With no glue holding the lid, the box opens cleanly and folds shut again many times without losing its shape.
Customers often keep them for jewellery, cables, cards or craft supplies. For returns, the buyer can repack the item in the same box and add a strip of tape or a label. If returns are common for you, print short instructions inside the lid so the customer knows the box is meant to go back. Kraft board ages well with handling, while a laminated finish wipes clean if the box will be stored on a shelf.
How do I fold an ear lock mailer?
The first few take a minute. After that, most packers fold one in well under that.
- Lay the blank flat with the inside print facing up.
- Fold the two end panels up, then fold the side walls over and down into the base.
- Push the small locking tabs at the base of each wall into their slots.
- Place your product and any insert or tissue.
- Close the lid, guide the ears into the side slots, then tuck the front flap in.
Mistakes to avoid with ear lock boxes
- Choosing a board too thick for a very small box, which makes the folds stiff
- Running artwork across the ear slots, where it gets cut through
- Forgetting that tissue and cards add height under the lid
- Using a heavy product with no insert, so it slides into the ears
- Skipping the proof check on where the lid message will sit

Ear Lock Mailer Boxes: questions
12 answersWhat are the ears on an ear lock mailer?
They are two small tabs on the sides of the lid. When the lid closes they slot into the folded side walls and lock it in place.
Can an ear lock mailer be reopened?
Yes. Nothing is glued, so the lid opens and closes many times. Many customers keep the box for storage.
Do I need tape to post an ear lock box?
The ears hold the lid well, but a strip of tape or a seal sticker across the front is sensible for the post. It shows if the box has been opened.
Are ear lock boxes stronger than plain tuck mailers?
The double folded side walls make the sides stiffer, and the ears stop the lid lifting. We do not publish load ratings, so share your product weight and we will suggest a board.
Can you print inside the box?
Yes, in one colour or full colour. The inside of the lid and the inner walls can carry different artwork.
Which board do most gift brands choose?
White E flute at about 1.5 mm is the most common, as it gives a smooth surface for full colour print and folds neatly.
Can I add an insert to hold products?
Yes. Card or corrugated inserts can be quoted with the box, cut to hold each item in place.
Can I have foil on the lid?
Yes. Foil stamping, spot UV and embossing are all available, and work well on a laminated lid.
What sizes can you make?
Any inside size you give us in mm, cm or inches. The table above lists common starting sizes, not stock items.
How long does an order take?
Ear lock mailers go into production once the proof is signed off and take 4 to 6 business days. After that, your ear lock boxes reach you by tracked delivery in 2 to 3 business days.
What happens if boxes arrive misprinted?
Email photos within 10 days of the boxes arriving. We reprint any misprinted, damaged or faulty ear lock mailers, or refund them.
How do I get a price?
