Quick answer
What are side loading mailers?
A side loading mailer is a slim corrugated box that opens along one short end instead of the top. The item slides in, the end flaps fold over, and a tuck or tape closes it. It suits flat, rigid goods that would rattle in a deeper box.
Key facts
- Loads through one short end
- Slim profile for flat goods
- Folds from a single flat blank
- White or kraft corrugated
- From £0.25 per unit

What is a side loading mailer?
It is a flat-packed corrugated mailer that is built around the item and closed at one short end. Instead of a lid on top, the opening sits at the side, where the item slides in.
Our photos show the classic white version. One shows a banded bundle of flats ready to use. Two show a folded box with the end open and a small tuck flap standing up. Another shows a pale blue printed pair, one sliding out of the other.
The style is close to our slim literature mailers for documents, but usually a little deeper and sturdier.
Why load from the side?
Flat items are awkward to lower into a top opening box. They catch on the walls, and the lid often sits loose above them.
With a side loader, the item slides along the base and the box closes tight around it. The top panel is a solid sheet with no seams, so it gives a clean surface for an address label or a printed logo. Packers on a long run often find it faster, because the box can sit flat on the bench the whole time.
There is also less board in the build. With no double walls or deep lid, a side loader uses material only where the item needs it. That keeps the parcel light and slim, which can help it fit through letterboxes and parcel lockers.
Which items suit side loading mailers?
If an item is flat, rigid and fairly even in thickness, it is likely a good fit. Soft or bulky goods tend to pack better in a top opening mailer.
Ask if you are unsure about an item, and send a photo with its sizes.
- Hardback and paperback books
- Art prints and posters mounted on board
- Wall calendars and planners
- Picture frames and small canvases
- Certificates, contracts and printed reports
- Vinyl records and slim game cases
How do I size a side loading mailer?
Measure the item's length, width and thickness. Add a few millimetres to the length and width so it slides in easily, and a little height if you wrap it first.
Getting the height right matters most here. Too much space lets the item rattle; too little makes it hard to slide in. For framed items, include the corner protectors in your sizes. Our page on common UK box sizes lists typical formats if you are working from paper sizes.
If you post more than one thickness, such as single books and pairs, tell us both. It is often cheaper to have two heights than to fill a deep box with paper.
What board do side loaders use?
Most are single wall corrugated, white or kraft. The choice depends on weight and how much protection the edges need.
For most single books and prints, E flute is plenty. Step up to B flute when the item has hard corners, such as a frame, or when several books are packed together.
| Board | Thickness | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| E flute white | About 1.5 mm | Prints, documents, light books |
| E flute kraft | About 1.5 mm | Calendars and notebooks with a natural look |
| B flute white or kraft | About 3 mm | Hardbacks, frames, stacks of books |
| BC double wall | About 7 mm | Heavy framed pieces or large bundles |
How do you fold and close one?
Once your team has folded a dozen, it becomes routine. Keep a bundle of flats beside the bench so you can build them as you pack.
- Lay the flat blank on the bench, printed side down.
- Fold the base edges up and lock the closed end.
- Slide the item in through the open end.
- Fold the side flaps in, then push the tuck flap into place.
- Run a strip of tape across the end for the post.
Can side loading mailers be printed?
Yes. The large flat top panel is ideal for a logo or a simple pattern. We print plain, one colour, two colour or full colour CMYK, and can print on the inside too.
White board shows colour cleanly, as in the pale blue example in our photos. Kraft gives a warmer look that works with one colour black or white ink. Lamination, spot UV, foil and embossing are available, but many sellers keep side loaders plain or one colour, as they are mostly a shipping box. Our designers give free layout help and send a free digital proof.
Packing tips for prints and books
For heavier hardbacks, pair the box with our cardboard edge protectors for corners to stop knocks reaching the board.
- Slip prints into a card backer or sleeve before boxing
- Wrap book corners or use corner protectors for hardbacks
- Put a dry sheet of paper over a print face to stop rubbing
- Place the label on the solid top panel, not across the opening end
- Write the item title on the end panel if you store packed boxes on a shelf
Side loader or padded envelope: which is safer?
A padded envelope is light and cheap, but it bends. Anything that must arrive flat, such as a print, a certificate or a hardback, can crease or dent inside one.
A side loading mailer gives a rigid shell on all sides. Corrugated board resists bending far better than paper padding, and the closed ends protect the corners. It weighs a little more, so postage may change, but returns from bent goods cost far more than the extra grams.
Some sellers use both: envelopes for soft items like scarves, and side loaders for anything flat and stiff.
Mistakes to avoid
The most common mistake is making the box too deep. A side loader works because it holds the item tightly, and extra height undoes that.
Another is skipping tape on the end. The tuck flap holds well on a desk, but sorting machines and bags can push it open. Finally, avoid placing the address label across the opening, as the customer will have to cut through it.
It also pays to check the proof for the open end. Make sure no text or logo crosses the tuck flap fold, where it will be hidden or split once the box is closed.

Side Loading Mailers: questions
12 answersWhat does side loading mean?
The mailer opens at one short end rather than on top. The item slides in along the base, and the end flaps close behind it.
Are side loading mailers good for books?
Yes, they are one of the most common book mailers. The slim shape holds the book tight so the corners do not knock about.
Do side loaders need tape?
A tuck flap holds the end closed, but we recommend a strip of tape across it for the post.
Can I post A3 prints in one?
Yes, if the print is flat and backed with card. We can make the box to A3 plus a small allowance.
Which board is best for framed prints?
B flute at about 3 mm suits most small frames. For larger or heavier frames, BC double wall at about 7 mm gives more protection.
Do they come flat?
Yes. They arrive flat and banded in bundles, and fold around the item by hand.
Can the inside be printed?
Yes, inside print is available. Many sellers keep the inside plain and print only the top panel.
How thin can the box be?
We make it to your sizes, including very slim heights for documents. Give us the thickness of the item plus any wrapping.
Is a side loader cheaper than a top opening mailer?
It can be, as the shape is simple and uses less board for flat goods. Ask for both on one quote to compare.
Will I see a proof?
Yes, a free digital proof comes before any print run starts.
What if some mailers are faulty?
If any side loaders arrive misprinted, damaged or defective, send photos within 10 days. We will reprint or refund those boxes.
