What is a pyramid box?
It is a small box shaped like a pyramid. A flat base sits underneath, and the side panels fold up and lean in until their tips meet.
Most pyramid boxes are held shut by a ribbon or a piece of twine threaded through holes near each tip. Others close with small tuck flaps that interlock at the top.
Our photos show a black pyramid with a yellow ribbon and a floral one tied in pink. There is also a plain kraft one finished with natural twine.
One photo shows a related shape: a white triangular wedge that opens like a slice of cake. Tell us if that is closer to what you need.
Who orders pyramid boxes?
Pyramids are made for moments, not for shipping. They are bought by people who want a small gift to feel a little special.
Because they hold so little, the box itself does much of the work. A well-chosen ribbon and print can make two sweets feel like a proper present.
- Couples and planners filling wedding favours
- Chocolatiers and sweet shops packing two or three treats
- Jewellers wrapping earrings, rings or small pendants
- Party hosts handing out birthday or Easter gifts
- Brands sending samples at shows and launches
Which pyramid style should I choose?
The base shape and closure change both the look and the space inside. Use this table as a starting point.
| Style | Closure | Inside space | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Four-sided pyramid | Ribbon or twine | Roomy at the base | Favours, sweets, soaps |
| Three-sided pyramid | Ribbon or tuck | Smaller and slimmer | Jewellery, single truffles |
| Pyramid lid on a tray base | Lid lifts off | Flat tray holds the item | Cards, games, small sets |
| Cut-out pattern pyramid | Ribbon | As four-sided | Wedding tables and display |
How do I size a pyramid box?
Pyramids taper, so the usable space is at the bottom. Measure your item and make the base at least 15 mm wider on each side than the product.
Height matters too. The sides lean inward, so a tall item needs a taller pyramid than you might expect.
A quick test helps. Cut a paper template at the size you are thinking of, fold it round the product and see if it closes without squeezing.
For flat items such as cards or a small game, a separate tray base with a pyramid lid gives far more room. The kraft example with a deck of cards shows this approach.
Which board is best for pyramid boxes?
Folding board is the natural choice. It is light, folds to a sharp point and takes fine print and cut patterns.
Thickness matters more than usual here. The tips have to bend to a point, so a lighter board makes a neater top.
White board shows bright colours and soft florals well. Kraft board gives a rustic look that suits twine, hand-written tags and wedding stationery.
Pyramids are rarely made in corrugated, because the fluting makes the tips bulky. If you need a sturdier small gift box, look at our pop-up six corner gift boxes instead.
Print, patterns and finishes
Each side panel is a triangle, so designs often centre on one face with a pattern around the rest. Small repeat patterns, like the kraft tree design in our photos, work nicely.
We print plain, one colour, two colour or full colour CMYK, outside and inside. A coloured inside shows through cut-out patterns, as on the lace-style white pyramid with a teal base.
Matte or gloss lamination, foil stamping, spot UV and embossing are all options. A foil initial on the front face is a popular wedding touch.
Adding windows and cut-out patterns
A small window in one face lets guests see the sweet or gift inside. The black pyramid in our photos has a round window on the front.
Decorative patterns can also be cut into the panels. Lace, leaves and stars are common, but very fine detail weakens thin board.
Keep cut-outs away from the folds and the ribbon holes. That keeps the pyramid strong enough to tie tightly.
Plan the inside print with the pattern in mind. A deep colour behind white lace looks crisp, while a busy pattern behind a busy cut can look muddled.
How to fold and fill a pyramid box
Lay the box flat, printed side down, and crease every fold once before filling. A pre-creased box closes more evenly.
Place the item in the centre of the base, then lift the sides one at a time. Hold them together at the top while you thread the ribbon through the holes.
Tie a bow or a simple knot and trim the ends at an angle. For big batches, cut all your ribbon lengths before you start.
Filling a hundred favours takes longer than most people think. Set up a production line with friends: one folds, one fills and one ties.
Common pyramid box mistakes
Pyramids are simple, but these slips catch people out.
- Sizing the box to the product without allowing for the sloping sides
- Putting the main design on the base, which nobody sees
- Cutting patterns so fine that the board tears when tied
- Forgetting to ask for ribbon holes on a ribbon-closed design
- Ordering pyramids for posting when they are made for hand-out
Pyramid boxes for weddings and events
At weddings, a pyramid box at each place setting doubles as a name card. Print the guest's name on a tag tied into the ribbon, or print the couple's names on every box.
For birthdays, Easter and Halloween, brightly printed pyramids filled with sweets make easy party gifts. Plain kraft with a seasonal sticker keeps costs down if you run several events a year.
If you also need larger boxes for the same event, our carry handle boxes for party treats use the same print options.
Order a few spares beyond your guest count. Late additions, a damaged box or a last-minute table change are easier to handle with extras to hand.
Store the flat boxes somewhere dry until the week of the event. Fold and fill them a day or two ahead so the creases stay sharp.

Pyramid Boxes: questions
12 answersHow do pyramid boxes close?
Most close with ribbon or twine threaded through holes near the tips. Some use small tuck flaps that lock together at the top.
Do I need to supply ribbon?
Your quote lists exactly what is supplied. Many customers pick their own ribbon or twine to match a colour theme.
What fits inside a pyramid box?
Small items sit best: sweets, truffles, jewellery, a small candle or a soap. The sloping sides limit the height of anything placed inside.
Can a pyramid box have a window?
Yes. A window can be cut into one face, as on the black pyramid in our photos.
Can you cut a lace pattern into the sides?
Yes. Decorative cut-outs are possible, though very fine detail can weaken thin board.
Are pyramid boxes good for wedding favours?
They are one of the most popular favour boxes. Kraft with twine or white with a coloured ribbon both suit wedding tables.
Can I print a name on each box?
Every box in a run carries the same print. For individual names, many couples add a printed tag tied into the ribbon.
Can pyramid boxes be posted?
They are made for hand-out rather than the post. If you need to send them, pack them inside a shipping carton.
Do pyramid boxes arrive flat?
Yes. They arrive flat, which makes them easy to store until the event.
Can I get a pyramid lid with a separate base?
Yes. A tray base with a pyramid lid gives more room for flat items like cards or a small game.
How long do pyramid boxes take?
Production takes 4–6 business days after you approve the proof, then tracked delivery takes 2–3 business days.
What if some boxes are misprinted?
Send photos within 10 days. We reprint or refund misprinted, damaged or faulty boxes.
