Quick answer

What are fragile item mailers?

Fragile item mailers are corrugated mailer boxes chosen and sized for breakable goods. They use a thicker flute or double wall board, a close fit with wrapping or inserts, and clear fragile marks on the outside. The aim is to stop the item moving and to soften knocks before they reach it.

Key facts

  • Thicker B, C or BC board
  • Close fit with room for wrap
  • Printed fragile marks
  • Inserts for glass and ceramics
  • From £0.25 per unit

What is a fragile item mailer?

It is a mailer box built for things that break. The box style is familiar, but the board, sizing and inner packing are chosen with the product's weak points in mind.

Our photos show the idea. A kraft mailer has FRAGILE printed across the front, with glasses beside it. A navy box is marked with a printed label panel and warning panel. Others are full colour mailers in kraft and white board, closed and ready for the post.

For mugs in particular, our dedicated mug shipping boxes may be a closer fit.

What makes a mailer suitable for fragile goods?

None of these alone is enough. Breakages usually come from a mix of thin board, loose fit and too little cushioning.

We do not publish load or drop ratings, so we size and build each box around what you tell us about the product. The more detail you give, the better the advice.

  • Thicker board, such as B or C flute, or BC double wall for heavy items
  • A close fit, so the product cannot build up speed inside the box
  • Space for wrap or an insert on every side
  • Clear fragile marks so handlers know what is inside
  • A sealed front edge, so the lid cannot spring open if dropped

Which board should I choose for breakables?

Board choice is the biggest decision for fragile goods. Thicker flutes have more air inside the board, which takes up the force of a knock. Read about the trade-offs in our guide to single wall versus double wall boxes.

Remember that heavier board also means a heavier parcel. If postage is tight, a fitted insert in a B flute box can protect as well as a loose item in double wall.

BoardThicknessSuits
B flute single wallAbout 3 mmSingle glasses, candles in jars, small ceramics
C flute single wallAbout 4 mmBowls, vases and bottles with wrap
BC double wallAbout 7 mmHeavy glassware sets and larger ceramics
E flute single wallAbout 1.5 mmOnly for light items in a fitted insert

How much space should I leave around the item?

Enough for your cushioning, and no more. Wrap the item first, then measure it wrapped, and use those numbers as the inside size.

If you use an insert instead of wrap, measure the bare product and tell us. We size the insert to the product and the box to the insert. Either way, the item should not move when the closed box is shaken gently.

Give your sizes in mm, cm or inches, and include the item's weight. Weight helps us choose between single and double wall.

Odd shapes need a little thought. A jug with a handle should be measured across the handle, not just the body, and the handle wrapped on its own first.

Wrap, fill or insert: which protects best?

Each has its place. Paper wrap is quick and flexible, which suits mixed orders. Paper fill around the item stops it shifting but needs care to pack evenly.

Inserts hold the item in a fixed position, which suits repeat products like a set of glasses or a candle jar. They pack faster and look neater, but each insert is made for one product shape. Many shops combine methods: a fitted insert for the main item, plus a sheet of paper over the top. Our crinkle paper shred for void fill is a common pairing for gift boxes.

Should the box say fragile?

It helps. Printed marks tell handlers to take care and tell your customer to open the box gently. A single word on two sides is often enough.

We print plain, one colour, two colour or full colour CMYK, inside and out. Fragile marks look clean in one colour, like the white text on kraft in our photos. Inside, a short note on how to unwrap glass safely is useful. Finishes include uncoated kraft, matte or gloss lamination, spot UV, foil stamping and embossing, though most fragile mailers stay uncoated or matte.

How to pack a fragile mailer

If you hear movement, open the box and add more fill before sealing it again. A rattle in the packing room usually means a breakage on arrival.

  1. Wrap each piece separately, paying extra care to rims, handles and spouts.
  2. Put a layer of paper or an insert on the base first.
  3. Place the heaviest piece at the bottom, centred in the box.
  4. Fill gaps at the sides and top so nothing can move.
  5. Close the lid, tape along the front edge and check by a gentle shake.

Common causes of breakage

Each one is avoidable with the right size and a little extra packing time.

  • Choosing E flute for a heavy glass item with no insert
  • Leaving a gap at the top, so the item lifts and drops in transit
  • Packing two glass pieces touching each other
  • Letting a handle or spout rest against the box wall
  • Skipping tape, so a knock opens the lid

Is a box inside a box worth it?

For very delicate or valuable pieces, yes. Pack the wrapped item in a small inner box, then set that inside a larger mailer with fill all round. That puts two walls and a cushion between the item and any knock.

It takes more time and board, so most sellers keep it for their most fragile lines, such as thin glass, large ceramics or one-off art pieces. We can make both the inner and outer boxes to size on the same order, so they fit each other properly.

For everyday goods like mugs and jar candles, a single well-fitted mailer with good wrap is normally enough.

Who uses fragile item mailers?

Our customers for this style are mostly makers and small shops. Potters, glass artists, candle makers and homeware sellers post breakable goods every day.

Gift companies sending glasses for weddings or birthdays use them too, as do drinks brands posting bottles with branded glasses. For anything taller than it is wide, ask us about a tuck top build, which takes height more easily.

Fragile Item Mailers: questions

12 answers
What board is best for glassware?

B flute at about 3 mm suits single glasses. For sets or heavier pieces, C flute at about 4 mm or BC double wall at about 7 mm gives more protection.

Can you print FRAGILE on the box?

Yes. Fragile wording, arrows or icons can be printed in one colour or full colour on any panel.

Do I still need bubble wrap or paper?

Usually yes, unless the box has a fitted insert. The box sets the outer shell; wrap or an insert stops the item moving.

How tight should the fit be?

Snug around the wrapped item. If it moves when the closed box is shaken gently, add fill or reduce the size.

Can you make an insert for my glasses?

Yes. Corrugated or card inserts can be cut to hold each glass apart, quoted together with the box.

Do you give drop or load ratings?

No. We size and specify each box from your product sizes, weight and how you pack it, and advise on board.

Is double wall always better?

Not always. It adds weight and bulk. For light items, a fitted single wall box with good wrap is often enough.

Can I use a fragile mailer for candles in jars?

Yes, it is a common use. B flute with an insert or wrap around the jar works well.

Should I tape the box?

Yes. A strip of tape along the front edge keeps the lid shut if the parcel is dropped.

Will I see a proof?

Yes. Every order gets a free digital proof before anything is printed.

What if boxes arrive with defects?

Report any misprints, damage or defects on the boxes within 10 days, with photos, and we will reprint or refund them.
