What is an end opening mailer box?

It is a folding corrugated mailer whose lid lifts from one short end. The lid is hinged along the back, and when raised it reveals the whole of the inside in one go.

The ends are rolled panels. They fold over on themselves and lock into the base, which keeps the corners square without glue. In our photos you can see kraft, orange, teal and printed versions, some with tissue and one with a central card divider.

You may also hear the name used for a slim carton that slides open at a short end. If that is what you need, our side loading mailers for flat items may be closer to the mark.

Why open from the end rather than the side?

Opening along the short end gives a long, deep lid. When it is lifted, the inside of the lid faces the customer like a page, which is why so many brands print a message there.

The hinge at the back also keeps the box closed when it is stood on a shelf. That helps shops that store packed orders before dispatch, or customers who keep the box afterwards. The rolled ends add stiffness along the two short sides, which is where boxes are usually gripped and carried.

Who orders end opening mailers?

This is the classic subscription and kit box. Anyone sending several items together tends to find it useful.

It also suits shops that pack ahead. Finished kits can be built in a batch, stood on racking with the logo end facing out, and picked when orders arrive. The closed lid keeps dust off the contents while they wait.

  • Hobby and craft kits with tools, materials and instructions
  • Snack and sample boxes sent each month
  • Tech accessory bundles with cables and small devices
  • Beauty sets with two or three products side by side
  • Training packs and welcome boxes for staff or students

How do I work out the right size?

Lay out every item as it will be packed, including any divider, card or tissue. Measure the length, width and height of that arrangement and give us those as inside sizes.

End opening mailers suit a low, wide shape. A box much taller than it is wide becomes awkward to open from the end, and the lid can flop. If your items are tall, a tuck top style may suit better. Our page on common UK cardboard box sizes gives typical shapes for postal parcels.

A good test is a mock-up. Tape a rough box from an old carton at your chosen size and pack it fully. If the lid closes flat and nothing moves when shaken gently, the size is right. If the lid bulges, add height; if items slide, reduce the length or width.

Board and wall choices

Most end opening mailers are single wall, as the rolled ends already add strength where it counts. Pick the flute by weight and print.

White board shows colour brighter, while kraft gives print a softer, warmer tone. If you are printing one colour, kraft often looks the most natural. For full colour photos or bright brand shades, white E flute is the safer pick. Double wall is rarely needed for this style unless the kit is unusually heavy.

BoardApprox. thicknessWhen to use it
E flute kraft1.5 mmLight kits with a natural brown finish
E flute white1.5 mmBright colour print and clean edges
B flute kraft or white3 mmHeavier bundles, bottles or jars with fill
Kraft or white folding boardThin cardSmall, light retail packs handed over in person

Can I add dividers or an insert?

Yes. A single card divider down the middle, like the teal box in our photos, keeps two products apart and stops them knocking. A cut insert can hold bottles, tins or tools in fixed spots.

Tell us the size of each item and how you want them arranged. We will quote the box and insert together so the fit is planned from the start. For more options, see our range of corrugated box dividers and partitions.

Print ideas for an end opening lid

Because the lid opens like a cover, the inside lid panel is prime space. Icons, a short thank-you, or how-to-use steps all work well there.

We print plain, one colour, two colour or full colour CMYK, and can print inside and out. Matte or gloss lamination, spot UV, foil stamping and embossing are available, or you can leave the kraft uncoated. A logo on the front end panel helps on a shelf, as it faces outwards when boxes are stacked.

Think about the order in which things are seen. The outside end panel is seen on a shelf, the top on a doorstep, and the inside lid once opened. Using a different message for each keeps the box interesting without filling every panel.

Packing tips for kit boxes

  • Put the heaviest item at the hinge end so the lid does not tip forward
  • Lay tissue across the base before the items, then fold it over the top
  • Place leaflets on top, under the lid, so they are seen first
  • Seal the front with a sticker or tape strip for the post
  • Label the lid, not the front end, to keep the shelf face clear

Mistakes people make with end opening boxes

The common errors are about shape and layout. A box that is too tall makes the lid floppy. Artwork placed across the rolled end folds can look broken when the box is built.

Another is forgetting the divider in the size. A 2 mm card wall still takes space, and three dividers take more. Check the proof carefully, as it marks every fold and cut.

Finally, some buyers choose a very thin board to save weight, then find the lid bends when the box is carried. If you are unsure, ask us for advice before you approve the quote.

End Opening Mailer Boxes: questions

12 answers
What does end opening mean on a mailer box?

The lid is hinged at the back and lifts from the short front end. When open, the lid faces the customer and shows the full contents.

Is an end opening mailer the same as a roll end mailer?

Very close. Most end opening mailers use rolled end panels, and the two names are often used for the same style.

Can I fit a divider inside?

Yes. A card divider or cut insert can be quoted with the box. Give us the size of each item so the layout fits.

Does the box need tape to post?

The front flap tucks in and holds well, but a sticker or tape strip is advisable for the post. It also shows if the parcel was opened.

Which board is most common?

E flute single wall at about 1.5 mm is the usual choice. B flute at about 3 mm suits heavier kits.

Can the inside be printed?

Yes. Inside and outside print are both available in one colour, two colour or full colour.

Is this style good for tall items?

Not really. It works best as a low, wide box. Tall products are easier to pack in a tuck top mailer.

Will the box stand on a shelf without opening?

Yes. The hinge at the back keeps the lid shut when the box is stood upright or stacked.

What sizes can you make?

We make each order to the inside length, width and height you send, in mm, cm or inches. The sizes table shows typical starting points only.

How do I check the layout before printing?

We send a free digital proof marking folds and cuts. Nothing is printed until you approve it.

What if an order has faults?

Tell us within 10 days and include photos of any misprint, damage or defect. We will reprint those boxes or give a refund.

Where do you deliver?

Delivery is tracked and takes 2 to 3 business days after production. Delivery is free to every UK address.
