What counts as a box for small business?

It is less a single style and more a way of ordering. A small business needs boxes that fit its own products, carry its own name and arrive in quantities it can store.

In practice that means one of a handful of formats. Retail cartons sit on a shelf, mailers go through the post, and lid and base boxes suit gifts. You choose the format, then we build it around your inside size.

Most owners start with one box for their best seller. Once that works, a second size usually follows for bundles or larger items.

Who orders these boxes?

Our customers are often one or two people running a shop from a spare room, a market stall or a small unit. Some sell only online. Others sell at fairs and need boxes that look good on a table.

What they share is a need for a box that looks like their brand without paying for huge print runs or storing pallets of stock.

  • Candle and soap makers who want a carton that fits each product snugly
  • Jewellers who need a small, neat box that feels like part of the gift
  • Clothing brands posting folded garments in a printed mailer
  • Food producers packing biscuits, fudge or tea for retail
  • Subscription sellers sending the same set every month

Which box style suits my products?

Start with how the box will travel. If it goes into a carrier bag or onto a shelf, a folding board carton is usually enough. If it goes straight into the post, a corrugated mailer protects it better.

The table below is a simple starting point. Our designers can suggest another style once they see your product and sizes.

How do I measure for a small business box?

Put a ruler against the product, never against the carton it came in. Length is the longest edge, width the shorter one, and height runs from base to top. Write the sizes down in millimetres if you can.

Allow roughly 3 to 5 mm of play around each side so the item slides in without forcing. Add more if you plan to use tissue, an insert or a thank you card. The step by step box measuring guide covers tolerances in more detail.

If you sell several sizes, measure the largest item that will share the box. One well chosen size can often cover two or three products.

Which board should a small business choose?

Folding board is a single, smooth sheet. It prints crisply and feels like a shop-bought carton. It comes in white or kraft, and it suits items that do not travel loose in the post.

Corrugated card has a fluted layer between two liners. E flute is about 1.5 mm and keeps a slim, neat look. B flute is about 3 mm and adds more cushioning for heavier items or longer journeys.

For most small shops, E flute mailers and folding board cartons cover nearly everything. Double wall BC board is rarely needed unless you post heavy or fragile goods.

If you are unsure, our single wall and double wall comparison explains when the thicker board earns its place.

How should a small business box be printed?

Plain kraft with a one colour logo is the simplest option and often looks the most honest. Full colour CMYK lets you print photos, patterns and gradients edge to edge.

Inside print is popular with online sellers. A short message or a repeat pattern under the lid makes opening the box feel considered.

  • Matte lamination gives a soft, calm surface that shows fewer fingerprints
  • Gloss lamination makes strong colours look brighter
  • Spot UV picks out a logo with a shiny layer on a matte box
  • Foil stamping adds a metallic name or border
  • Embossing raises the logo so customers can feel it

How can I keep packing quick and tidy?

Boxes arrive flat, so store them flat and dry. Fold a day's worth in the morning and keep them stacked near your packing table.

Pick one inside size that fits most orders. Fewer sizes mean less storage space, faster packing and fewer mistakes when you are busy.

If items rattle, a card insert or a little crinkle paper holds them still. A tidy box arrives looking the way you packed it.

Keep a small stock of each size so a busy weekend does not leave you short. A quick count each Friday shows when it is time to reorder.

How many box sizes should a small shop start with?

Two is a sensible number for most new shops. One size covers single items and a second, larger size takes bundles or gift sets.

Lay out your ten best sellers and group them by size. You will usually find that most of them fit one of two boxes with a little padding.

Adding a third size later is easy, because your artwork can be adapted to the new shape. Starting small keeps cash and shelf space free while you learn what customers buy.

What mistakes do new sellers make with boxes?

The most common one is ordering a box that is too big. Products slide around, the box feels empty and postage can cost more than it should.

  • Measuring the outside of an old box instead of the product
  • Choosing heavy board for light items that do not need it
  • Putting small text close to folds, where it can crease
  • Forgetting room for an insert, tissue or leaflet
  • Using a low resolution logo that prints soft or blurred

Boxes for Small Business: questions

12 answers
Can I order boxes for more than one product at once?

Yes. Send the inside size for each product and we quote them together. Each size gets its own proof before printing.

Do I need my own artwork?

No. Send your logo and a rough idea, and our designers will lay it out for free. You then check it on the digital proof.

Which style is best for posting orders?

A corrugated mailer box is usually the right choice. It folds into a sturdy shape with a hinged lid and protects items in transit.

Can I print my logo inside the lid?

Yes. Inside print is available on mailers and cartons, so the first thing a customer sees can be your name or a short message.

Is kraft or white board better for a small brand?

Kraft has a natural brown look that suits handmade goods. White board makes printed colours look brighter and cleaner.

Can you add an insert to hold my products?

Yes. Card inserts can be cut to hold jars, bottles or sets. Tell us the sizes of each item and we will plan the layout.

How quickly can a small order be ready?

Once you sign off the proof, your boxes go into production for 4–6 business days. The tracked parcel then reaches you in 2–3 business days.

Do the boxes arrive assembled?

No. They ship flat to save space and postage, and most styles fold together by hand in a few seconds.

Will I see my logo on the box before printing?

Yes. We send a free digital proof showing your logo and colours on the flat box shape, and printing waits for your approval.

What happens if a few boxes are misprinted?

Photograph the faulty boxes and send them to us within 10 days of delivery. We reprint those boxes or refund them.

Can I order in inches instead of millimetres?

Yes. Send sizes in millimetres, centimetres or inches. Just say which unit you used so nothing gets mixed up.

Can I have boxes sent to a different UK address?

Yes. We deliver free to any UK address you name, such as a unit, a studio or your home. Each parcel carries tracking so you can follow it.
