Round cardboard boxes are circular boxes with a separate lid that sits over the rim, often called hat boxes. The wall is stiff board wrapped in kraft or printed paper. They suit flowers, hats, candles, sweets and gifts, and are often kept and reused long after the first opening.

What are round cardboard boxes?

A round box has a circular base, a curved wall and a lid that fits over the top rim. People often call them hat boxes, because that is what they were first used for. Today they hold flowers, candles, sweets, cosmetics and all kinds of gifts.

The photos show the range well. There is a nesting pair in a damask print and a set of three floral boxes in different sizes. Another is white, with a palm pattern and gold edging. Plain kraft versions appear too, one with the lid off to show the deep wall.

Who buys round boxes?

Round boxes stand out on a shelf or a doorstep because most packaging is square. That makes them popular with businesses that want a gift to feel special from the first glance. They also photograph well, which helps sellers who share their packaging online.

Florists use them for arrangements that sit in foam inside the box. Milliners and bridal shops use the larger sizes for hats and headpieces. For upright tubes rather than wide hat boxes, see our cardboard cylinder boxes for tall items.

How is a round box different from a tube?

Both are circular, but they are shaped for different jobs. The table below sets out the main differences, so you can pick the right one.

How do I measure for a round box?

Round boxes are sized by inside diameter and inside height. The lid is then made to fit over the outside of the wall. For general advice on inside sizes, read our guide to measuring inside dimensions.

  1. Measure the widest point of the item or arrangement.
  2. Measure the height from base to top, including any foam or stems.
  3. Add a little room so the item drops in without touching the wall.
  4. Decide whether the lid should be shallow or deep.
  5. Send the inside diameter and height in mm, cm or inches.

How are round boxes made?

Board does not fold into a curve the way it folds into a square, so round boxes are built differently. A strip of stiff board is formed into a ring and joined to a circular base. The lid is made the same way, with a shorter wall.

The outside is then wrapped in paper. That paper can be plain kraft, white, or printed with your pattern or logo. Because the wall is already curved, round boxes arrive made up rather than flat. Plan a little more storage space than you would for folding boxes.

A round box made this way is firm in the hand. The curved wall resists squeezing well, and the lid adds a second layer around the top. That is one reason customers so often keep them for storage once the gift is gone.

What print and finishes suit a round box?

The printed wrap runs all the way round, so patterns work especially well. A repeat design, such as florals or stripes, looks complete from every angle. The lid top is the best place for a logo.

Matte or gloss lamination protects the print from handling. Foil stamping adds a metal edge or logo, as on the palm box in our photos. Embossing works well on plain kraft lids for a quieter mark.

  • Full colour CMYK print on the wrap and lid
  • One colour logo on a kraft lid
  • Gold or silver foil on the lid edge or logo
  • Printed inside wrap for a hidden pattern
  • Matching sets in two or three sizes

Can round boxes be made as a nesting set?

Yes. A nesting set is two or more round boxes in stepped sizes that sit inside each other. The floral and damask sets in our photos are good examples.

Nesting sets save space in storage and look generous as a gift. They also let you sell the same design in small, medium and large. Send us the sizes you want, and we will check that each one fits neatly inside the next. Keep the same print across the set, or change the colour for each size so the range is easy to tell apart.

How should I pack and send a round box?

Round boxes are not shaped for the post on their own. The curved wall rolls, and labels sit badly on it. For delivery, place the round box inside a square shipping carton with filler around it.

For flowers, fix the foam or vase inside the base so it cannot tip. For hats, support the brim with tissue so it keeps its shape. Our crinkle paper shred for gift boxes works well as a filler inside the lid. Keep the lid on with a paper band or a small sticker on each side.

What mistakes do people make with round boxes?

The first is measuring a bouquet without its foam or stems. The second is choosing a very shallow lid for a tall box. A shallow lid can lift off when the box is carried by its sides.

The third is expecting round boxes to arrive flat. They cannot fold, so they take up much more space than a square box of the same size. Check your storage before ordering a large quantity. A deeper lid also hides the join between lid and base, which gives a neater finish.

How do round boxes reach me?

Because round boxes come made up, they are packed in protective cartons for the journey. Tracked delivery takes 2 to 3 business days and costs nothing for UK addresses.

Check that lids sit well on each base when the boxes arrive. If any are crushed, misprinted or faulty, send photos within 10 days. We will reprint the round boxes or refund them.

Round Cardboard Boxes: questions

12 answers
What is another name for a round cardboard box?

Round boxes are often called hat boxes. They have a circular base and a lid that fits over the rim.

Are round boxes good for flowers?

Yes. Florists use them for arrangements set in foam. Tell us the diameter and height of the arrangement when you ask for a quote.

Do round boxes arrive flat?

No. The curved wall cannot fold, so round boxes arrive made up. Allow more storage space than for folding boxes.

Can I order round boxes in a nesting set?

Yes. We can make two or more sizes that fit inside each other, in the same or matching designs.

Can round boxes be posted on their own?

They are best placed inside a square shipping carton. The curved wall can roll, and labels do not sit well on it.

How do I measure a round box?

Give us the inside diameter and the inside height. We make the lid to fit over the outside of the wall.

Can the whole wrap be printed?

Yes. The wrap can be printed in full colour all the way round, with a logo or pattern on the lid.

Can I have a plain kraft round box?

Yes. Plain kraft round boxes are popular for a natural look. You can add a one colour logo or embossing on the lid.

What is the difference between a round box and a cylinder box?

A round box is wide and fairly low with a lift-off lid. A cylinder box is narrow and tall, more like a tube.

How much do round cardboard boxes cost?

Prices start from £0.25 per unit. Size, wrap, print and quantity set the final price on a written quote.

How long do round boxes take to make?

Production runs 4 to 6 business days from proof approval, then tracked delivery takes 2 to 3 business days.

What if a round box arrives crushed?

Send us photos within 10 days. We will reprint or refund the damaged boxes.
