Quick answer
What are double wall tuck front boxes?
A double wall tuck front box is a folding mailer with a hinged lid whose front flap tucks into the base. It is made from BC double wall corrugated, about 7 mm thick, so it is stiffer than a standard mailer. No tape is needed to close it, though many sellers add a strip for security.

What is a double wall tuck front box?
It is a one-piece folding box with a lid hinged at the back. The side walls roll over on themselves, and the front of the lid tucks down inside the base to close.
Most tuck front mailers use single wall board. This version uses BC double wall, which has two flutes and a total thickness of about 7 mm. The result feels solid in the hand and resists crushing far better.
If you want the lighter single wall version, see our main page on custom printed mailer boxes.
Who orders double wall tuck front boxes?
These boxes suit sellers whose goods are too heavy or delicate for a standard mailer but who still want a box that opens like a gift.
If a single wall mailer keeps arriving dented, this is the natural next step. The thicker board adds protection without changing how the box looks or opens.
- Candle and home fragrance brands posting glass jars
- Drinks producers sending boxed bottles and gift sets
- Ceramic makers posting mugs, bowls and vases
- Food brands shipping jars, tins and hampers
- Any seller who wants a premium feel without a rigid box
Why choose double wall over single wall for a mailer?
Thicker walls mean more cushioning and more resistance to dents. On a folding mailer, the rolled sides already give two layers of board, so a double wall version has very stiff side walls.
The trade-off is weight and fold. Double wall is heavier and folds less tightly than single wall, so very small boxes can look chunky. For anything under about 150 mm long, single wall is often neater. Our guide to choosing single or double wall board covers this in more depth.
| Feature | Single wall tuck front | Double wall tuck front |
|---|---|---|
| Board thickness | About 1.5 to 4 mm | About 7 mm |
| Feel in the hand | Light and neat | Solid and firm |
| Best for | Clothing, books, light gifts | Glass, ceramics, heavy sets |
| Small sizes | Folds crisply | Can look bulky |
How do I measure for a tuck front box?
Measure the product or the packed set, then add any room needed for an insert or tissue. Send us the inside length, width and height.
Double wall board is thick, so the outside of the box ends up noticeably larger than the inside. If you have a postal size limit in mind, tell us and we will check the outer size before quoting.
Height matters most on this style. If the goods sit proud of the walls, the lid will not tuck in properly, so measure to the highest point, including any lid or cap.
- Place the goods as they will sit in the box.
- Measure length (left to right), width (front to back) and height.
- Add space for any insert or wrapping.
- Send the inside size and mention any outer limit you need to meet.
Can I print inside and outside?
Yes. The inside of the lid is a favourite spot for a thank you note or a pattern. The customer sees it the moment the box opens.
We print plain, one colour, two colour or full colour CMYK, on kraft or white outer liners. Coloured boxes in solid shades are very popular for this style.
Matte or gloss lamination gives a smooth surface, and spot UV, foil stamping or embossing can pick out a logo. Layout help from our designers is free, and a free digital proof comes before any print run.
Should I add an insert?
For a single heavy item, the double wall body often does enough on its own. For sets, or for glass that must not touch, an insert keeps each piece in place.
Corrugated inserts give the most cushion. Kraft or white folding board inserts are lighter and print well, which suits gift sets where the layout is part of the look. Browse our packing supplies and box inserts for options.
Tell us the weight of each piece when you ask for a quote. A heavy bottle needs a deeper cradle than a light jar of the same height.
How do I fold and close a tuck front box?
Lay the flat box print side down. Fold up the front and back walls, then roll the side panels over and press the locking tabs into the base slots.
Place the goods, fold the dust flaps in, and bring the lid over. Push the front tuck flap down inside the front wall. The side ears on the lid lock it in place.
For extra security in the post, add a strip of tape or a sticker across the front edge. It also shows the box has not been opened on the way.
After the first dozen, most packers fold one in well under a minute. Double wall board is a little stiffer, so press each crease firmly the first time.
What mistakes do people make with double wall mailers?
One is choosing double wall for very small boxes. The thick board can make the rolled walls look heavy and the lid harder to close.
Another is forgetting how much the outer size grows. A box that fits your goods may slip into a higher postage band.
A third is artwork placed too close to the folds. On thick board, the fold lines take a little more of the panel, so keep text well back from the edges.
Lastly, some sellers order the box but forget the dust flaps need room to fold in. Leave a few millimetres at each end so the flaps lie flat over the goods.

We send these free to any address in the UK. The boxes arrive flat, so even a large order takes little room to store.

Double Wall Tuck Front Boxes: questions
12 answersWhat is a tuck front box?
A tuck front box is a folding mailer whose hinged lid has a front flap that tucks inside the base. It closes without glue or tape.
How thick is double wall board?
BC double wall is about 7 mm thick. It has two layers of flute between three liners.
Is a double wall tuck front box stronger than a normal mailer?
Yes. The thicker board resists crushing and dents better than single wall, which suits heavy or fragile goods.
Can I print inside the lid?
Yes. Inside print is popular on this style, and the lid is the first thing customers see when they open the box.
Does the box need tape to close?
No. The front tuck and side ears hold it shut. Many sellers add tape or a sticker for extra security in the post.
Can I get coloured double wall tuck front boxes?
Yes. We print solid colours and full colour CMYK designs on kraft or white board.
Can you add an insert for bottles or jars?
Yes. Corrugated or folding board inserts can be cut to hold each item in place.
Is double wall a good choice for small boxes?
Usually not. Below about 150 mm long, single wall folds more neatly and looks less bulky.
Do the boxes arrive flat?
Yes. They arrive flat and fold up by hand in a few moves.
How much are double wall tuck front boxes?
Prices start from £0.25 per unit. Size, print and finish set the final figure on your written quote.
How fast can you deliver double wall mailers?
Making the boxes takes 4 to 6 business days once you approve the proof. A tracked parcel service then delivers them in 2 to 3 business days.
What if my double wall boxes are misprinted?
Send photos within 10 days of delivery, and we will put the order back through production or return your money.
