What are shipping boxes?

What counts as a shipping box?
A shipping box is any corrugated carton strong enough to travel without an outer wrap. The fluted middle layer gives it stiffness, so corners hold their shape when parcels are stacked in a van.
The two shapes we make most are the slotted carton, with four flaps top and bottom, and the folding mailer with a hinged lid. Both start life as one flat sheet that you fold at your bench.
Because the fold lines are pressed into the board at the factory, every box folds square. That keeps the walls upright and helps the carton keep its strength once it is full.
If you want to see the wider family of outer cartons, browse our corrugated and shipping box range before you settle on a style.
Who orders custom shipping boxes?
Most of our shipping box orders come from small sellers who have outgrown supermarket boxes. Stock-sized cartons rarely match their products, so they pay for void fill and extra weight on every parcel.
What these buyers share is repetition. They pack the same few products week after week, so a carton cut to those products pays back quickly in saved filler, tape and packing time.
- Online shops sending clothing, homeware or gifts
- Makers posting candles, ceramics and prints
- Wholesalers moving cases between units
- Subscription brands that send the same kit each month
- Event and trade show teams packing kit to travel
How do I measure for a shipping box?
Measure the product, not an old box. Take the longest side as the length, the next as the width, and the vertical side as the height.
Add a small allowance for wrapping. For a snug fit, 5 mm each way is usually plenty; with bubble wrap or paper, allow 15 to 25 mm.
Our step-by-step guide on how to measure a box properly shows which way round to read each side.
- Lay the item on a flat surface in the way it will sit in the box.
- Measure length, then width, then height, using the outer edges.
- Add your packing allowance to each figure.
- Send us those inside sizes in mm, cm or inches.
Single wall or double wall: which board should I pick?
Single wall board has one fluted layer between two liners. C flute, at about 4 mm, suits the bulk of everyday parcels. B flute, at about 3 mm, folds tighter and prints a little cleaner.
Double wall BC board stacks two flutes for a wall of about 7 mm. Choose it for heavy goods, glass, or boxes that will sit at the bottom of a stack.
Not sure which suits your load? Our guide comparing single wall and double wall boxes walks through real examples.
| Board | Wall thickness | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| E flute single wall | About 1.5 mm | Light mailers and printed outer cartons |
| B flute single wall | About 3 mm | Books, clothing and boxed gifts |
| C flute single wall | About 4 mm | General parcels and mixed orders |
| BC double wall | About 7 mm | Heavy, fragile or stacked loads |
Can shipping boxes be printed?
Yes. Plain kraft is the cheapest route, and many sellers simply add a printed label. When you want the box to carry your name, we print one colour, two colour or full colour CMYK.
Mailer styles can also be printed on the inside, which customers see as soon as the lid opens. Finishes run from uncoated kraft to matte or gloss lamination, spot UV, foil stamping and embossing.
Our designers help with layout at no charge, and you approve a free digital proof before anything goes to press.
A simple one colour logo on kraft often gives the best value. It reads clearly, keeps print costs down, and suits brands that like a natural, unbleached look.
Which shipping box style suits my goods?
A slotted carton is the workhorse. It packs fast, takes deep items and seals with a strip of tape along each seam.
A folding mailer suits flatter goods and gift orders. It locks shut with tabs and looks tidy on arrival, which matters when the box is the first thing a buyer sees.
For heavy cases of jars or tins, a slotted carton in double wall is usually the safer choice.
Some sellers use both. They keep a slotted carton for bulk and trade orders, and a printed mailer for single retail orders where presentation counts. Each style can share the same artwork, so the two still look like one brand.
If you are torn between the two, send us a photo of the goods and the way you pack them now. We will suggest the style that wastes the least space.
How should I pack a shipping box?
Good packing does as much work as good board. The aim is to stop the contents moving, because movement is what breaks things in transit.
Run a test pack before a big order goes out. Fill one box as you normally would, shake it, and drop it from a low height onto a soft floor. If anything rattles, adjust the filler or ask us to tighten the size.
- Put heavy items at the bottom and lighter ones on top.
- Fill gaps so nothing shifts when you shake the box gently.
- Tape the centre seam and both edge seams on slotted cartons.
- Keep labels flat on the largest face, away from the seams.
- Do not overfill; a bulging lid weakens the whole carton.
What mistakes do people make when ordering shipping boxes?
The most common slip is sending outside measurements. Board thickness then eats into the space, and the product no longer fits.
Another is choosing a box far bigger than needed. Couriers charge by size as well as weight, so empty space costs money on every parcel. Our tips on cutting postage costs on UK parcels explain how size bands work.
Finally, people sometimes pick single wall for goods that will be stacked high in storage. If boxes will carry weight from above, ask us about double wall.
How long do shipping boxes take to arrive?
Production starts once you approve the proof and runs for 4 to 6 business days. After that, a tracked courier brings the bundles to you within 2 to 3 business days.
Delivery is free to every UK address. Boxes arrive flat, banded in bundles, so they take up far less shelf space than assembled cartons.
If you have a launch date or a busy week ahead, tell us when you first ask for a quote. We can then plan the proof stage around your timeline rather than leaving it to chance.

Shipping Boxes: questions
12 answersWhat is the difference between a shipping box and a mailer box?
A shipping box is the broad name for any corrugated carton used to send goods. A mailer box is one style of shipping box, with a hinged lid that tucks shut.
Do you make shipping boxes in any size?
Yes. Every order is cut to the inside length, width and height you give us, in mm, cm or inches.
Should I give you inside or outside measurements?
Always inside measurements. We work out the outer size from the board you choose, so your product fits as planned.
Which board is best for heavy shipping boxes?
BC double wall, at about 7 mm, is the usual choice for heavy or stacked loads. For lighter parcels, single wall C flute is often enough.
Can I order plain shipping boxes with no print?
Yes. Plain kraft shipping boxes are a common order, and you can add a printed label or tape later.
Can you print my logo inside the lid?
Yes, on mailer styles. Inside print is available in one colour, two colour or full colour CMYK.
Do shipping boxes arrive assembled?
No. They arrive flat in bundles, which saves storage space. You fold them up by hand when you pack.
How much do custom shipping boxes cost?
Prices start from £0.25 per unit. The final figure depends on size, board and print, and is confirmed on a written quote.
How long does production take?
Production runs for 4 to 6 business days once the proof is approved. Your boxes then reach you by tracked delivery in 2 to 3 business days.
Which UK addresses can you deliver shipping boxes to?
Any address in the UK. Tracked delivery is free wherever the boxes are going.
Will I get a proof of my shipping box artwork?
Yes. You receive a free digital proof, and nothing is printed until you approve it.
What if my boxes arrive damaged?
Report any misprint, damage or defect within 10 days with photos. We will reprint the boxes or refund you.
