A retention box keeps goods from sliding around by locking them into a fitted corrugated insert inside the outer carton. Send us the product size and we design the box and insert as one pack.
Quick answer
What are retention boxes?
Retention boxes are shipping boxes with a built-in insert that grips the product and holds it clear of the outer walls. Because the item cannot move, knocks to the outside are less likely to reach it. They suit fragile, high-value or awkwardly shaped goods.
Key facts
- Insert holds goods off the walls
- Outer and insert made as a set
- Cuts out loose void fill
- Printed outside, inside or both
- From £0.25 per unit

What is a retention box?
A retention box is a two-part pack. The outer carton gives the shape and strength. Inside it, a fitted corrugated insert grips the product so it cannot shift.
The insert holds the item away from the outer walls. That gap acts as a crumple zone: if the box takes a knock, the outer wall gives a little before anything reaches the goods.
It is a step up from filling a box with loose paper or chips. You get the same protection on every parcel, with no guesswork at the packing bench.
Who needs retention packaging?
Retention boxes suit any product that would be costly to replace if it broke in transit. They also suit shapes that roll about in a plain carton.
A good test is to ask how often a product comes back broken. If returns for damage cost more than the packaging, a retention box usually pays for itself.
- Electronics, small appliances and devices
- Glass and ceramic bottles, jars and candles
- Cosmetics and skincare sets with several pieces
- Spare parts and components with delicate edges
- Subscription boxes where items must arrive in order
How does the insert hold the product?
The insert is cut from flat corrugated board and folded into a frame. Depending on the product, it might be a cradle with a cut-out shaped to the item, a raised platform, or a grid of cells.
Cradles suit single items such as a device or a bottle. Cell grids suit sets of jars or tubes, keeping each one apart. A raised platform lifts the product off the base, adding space beneath it.
Tabs and locks on the insert hold it in shape without glue. Most designs click together in a few seconds once your team has packed a handful.
If you only need the insert for a box you already use, see our made-to-measure corrugated inserts.
How do I size a retention box?
With a retention box, we start from the product, not the carton. Send us the exact size of each item, and ideally a sample or clear photos with a ruler alongside.
We then set the insert around the product and the outer box around the insert. You do not need to work out the outer size yourself.
If you sell the same product in two or three sizes, tell us. Sometimes one outer box can take several inserts, which keeps your stock of cartons simple.
- Measure each item at its widest points, including caps or handles.
- Note any fragile areas, such as a screen or a glass neck.
- Tell us how many items go in each box and in what layout.
- Send the details, and we will suggest an insert design and an outer size.
Which boards are used for the outer and insert?
The insert is usually thinner than the outer. E flute at about 1.5 mm folds into tight shapes and holds small items closely. B flute at about 3 mm gives more cushion for heavier goods.
The outer box is often C flute single wall at about 4 mm. For weighty or very fragile products, BC double wall at about 7 mm gives more room to absorb a knock. Kraft or white folding board can be used for a light inner tray in a printed gift pack.
| Part | Common board | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Insert for small items | E flute single wall | Folds tightly, holds shapes closely |
| Insert for heavy items | B flute single wall | More cushion and stiffness |
| Outer for everyday parcels | C flute single wall | Good strength for its weight |
| Outer for heavy or fragile goods | BC double wall | Thicker walls, more crush room |
Can retention boxes be printed?
Yes, on the outer, the insert, or both. A printed insert gives a tidy reveal when the lid opens, with the product framed in the centre.
Print runs from plain board to one colour, two colour or full colour CMYK. For the finish, choose bare kraft, a matte or gloss laminate, spot UV, foil stamping or embossing.
Our designers help place artwork around the cut-outs at no charge, and you see a free digital proof before production. More branded options sit in our printed and retail box range.
How should I pack a retention box?
Fold the insert first and set it in the outer box. Lower the product into its cradle or cell, then check it cannot move when you tilt the box.
Close the outer box and seal it. Because the insert does the holding, you should not need loose filler. If you find yourself adding paper, the insert may need a small change, so let us know.
Keep a few inserts aside when you receive the order. They make handy test pieces if your product size changes later.
What mistakes happen with retention box orders?
The biggest is sending rough sizes. A retention insert works by fitting closely, so a few millimetres out can mean a loose item or one that will not go in.
Another is forgetting packaging on the product itself. If the item ships in its own retail carton or pouch, measure that, not the bare product.
Some buyers also choose a heavy double wall outer when the insert already gives plenty of space. A lighter outer can save weight on every parcel.
Is a retention box better than a box with void fill?
For fragile or costly goods, usually yes. Loose fill settles in transit, letting the product sink to the bottom. A fitted insert keeps the same position from the bench to the door.
It also speeds up packing. There is nothing to scoop or stuff, and new staff can pack a correct parcel on their first day. For lighter goods, a simple mailer may still be the better value.
It can also cut waste for your customers. A single corrugated insert is easier to flatten and recycle than a box full of mixed fillers.
How do I order retention boxes?
Retention box sets start from £0.25 per unit, and your written quote shows the outer and insert together. You can also get in touch by email or WhatsApp to talk the design through first.

- Send product sizes, photos and the quantity you need.
- We suggest an insert style and outer size.
- Check the quote and a free digital proof of the insert layout.
- Approve, and we cut both parts.

Retention Boxes: questions
12 answersWhat does a retention box do?
It holds the product in a fitted insert so it cannot move inside the outer box. That keeps it clear of the walls and away from knocks.
Do retention boxes need bubble wrap or void fill?
Usually not. The insert does the holding, so loose filler is rarely needed.
What is the insert made from?
Our retention inserts are cut from corrugated board, most often E or B flute. Kraft or white folding board can be used for light inner trays.
Can you make a retention box for an odd-shaped product?
Yes. We cut the insert around your product, so odd shapes are fine. Clear photos with a ruler, or exact sizes, help us get the fit right.
Can a retention box hold several items?
Yes. A cell grid or multi-cradle insert can hold sets of bottles, jars or parts, each in its own space.
Can I print the insert as well as the box?
Yes. You can print the outer, the insert, or both, in one colour, two colour or full colour.
Do retention boxes arrive assembled?
No. The outer and insert both arrive flat. They fold together quickly at your packing bench.
Can I order only the insert for my existing box?
Yes. Send us the inside size of your box and the product size, and we can cut an insert to suit.
Which outer board should I choose?
C flute single wall suits most products. BC double wall is better for heavy or very fragile goods.
How much do retention boxes cost?
Prices start from £0.25 per unit. Your written quote covers the outer and the insert together.
How long do retention boxes take to make?
Your sets are cut in 4 to 6 business days after you sign off the proof. A tracked courier then brings them in 2 to 3 business days.
What if the insert does not fit when it arrives?
If the boxes are misprinted, damaged or faulty, tell us within 10 days with photos. We will reprint or refund.
