What makes a box eco friendly?
There is no single label that makes a box green. What matters is the choices you make when you order it.
A box that is all paper fibre, with no plastic film stuck to it, is simpler for a customer to put out with their card waste. A box that fits closely uses less board and leaves less empty space in a van.
Our photos show the typical look. Plain brown kraft mailers and shipping boxes carry a single ink colour, and one is simply tied with a ribbon.
So rather than a special material, think of it as a set of sensible habits applied to an ordinary cardboard box.
Which choices make the biggest difference?
Some decisions change the material used far more than others. If you only act on a few, start at the top of this list.
- Get the size right, so there is no wasted board or empty space
- Pick the lightest board that still protects the product
- Leave the surface uncoated instead of adding a plastic laminate
- Use one or two ink colours rather than full flood coverage
- Design a box that closes by folding, so no plastic tape is needed
- Make inserts from card rather than foam or plastic trays
How do eco friendly finishes compare?
Finishes are where many boxes stop being simple paper. The table shows how each option we offer affects that.
None of these is wrong, but if a plain paper box is your aim, the first two rows are the ones to look at.
| Option | What it adds | Effect on a plain paper box |
|---|---|---|
| Uncoated kraft | Nothing; bare board | Stays all card |
| One or two colour print | A small amount of ink | Stays mainly card |
| Full colour CMYK | Ink over most of the surface | More ink, still card |
| Matte or gloss lamination | A thin plastic film | No longer plain paper |
| Foil stamping | A metallic foil layer | Adds a non-paper layer |
| Spot UV | A raised varnish coating | Adds a coated area |
| Embossing | Raised shape pressed into board | Stays all card |
How do I size an eco friendly box well?
A close fit is the most practical green step you can take. Every centimetre of extra height adds board on four sides and empty air that needs filling.
Measure the product, or the stack of products, at its largest points. Then allow just enough room for it to go in and out comfortably.
Smaller boxes also pack more tightly onto shelves and into delivery vehicles. That means fewer journeys for the same number of orders.
If you post several sizes of order, two or three well chosen boxes usually beat one large box padded with filler. Our guide to cutting UK parcel costs shows how size also changes what you pay to send.
Which board should I choose for an eco box?
Kraft board is the usual choice. It is brown, unbleached in appearance and looks right with simple print.
E flute, about 1.5 mm, suits small mailers and retail packs. B flute, about 3 mm, adds cushioning for heavier goods. Double wall BC, about 7 mm, should only be used when the contents really need it.
Choosing a heavier board than you need adds weight to every parcel. It is worth asking our team which flute your product actually requires.
For retail items that never travel alone, kraft folding board is lighter again. It has no flute at all and folds into a neat carton.
How should an eco box be printed?
One colour on kraft is the classic look, and it uses very little ink. A dark green, black or deep blue reads well on brown board.
Two colour print lets you add an accent without covering the whole box. Full colour is still possible on kraft, but colours appear softer and warmer than on white board.
Inside print is available if you want a message under the lid. Many brands leave the inside bare, which keeps the box simpler.
A small logo and web address on the lid can be enough. Customers often like a box that does not shout.
What can I use instead of plastic fillers?
The aim is to keep the product still with paper-based materials. A good fit does most of that work on its own.
For gaps that remain, card inserts, folded kraft paper or paper shred all keep the parcel paper-based. Our crinkle paper shred for gift boxes is a tidy option for small, light items.
If you need tape, a paper tape matches a kraft box. A folding mailer with locking tabs may not need tape at all.
Light items such as clothing often need nothing extra once the box fits. Fold the garment to the inside size and close the lid.
What mistakes undo an eco friendly box?
It is easy to choose kraft board and then add things that work against the idea. Watch for these.
- Adding a gloss laminate to a box sold as plain and natural
- Ordering one large size for every product and filling the gaps
- Using plastic air pillows inside a paper box
- Printing green claims you cannot back up on the box
- Picking double wall board for light, unbreakable goods
What should I say about my packaging?
Keep any wording on the box factual and simple. Telling customers the box is cardboard and can go in their card recycling is clear and useful.
Avoid broad words or symbols you cannot prove. We print the text you approve, so check your claims before you sign off the proof.
A short line asking customers to flatten the box before putting it out is helpful. It is a plain instruction rather than a claim.

- Choose kraft board and the flute, or ask us to recommend one.
- Pick plain, one colour or two colour print.
- Review the free digital proof our designers prepare.

How are eco friendly boxes priced?
Pricing starts from £0.25 per unit, with your exact cost written into a quote before production. Simple print often keeps the cost down as well.
We do not charge for delivery anywhere in the UK. Any order with misprints, damage or defects, reported with photos inside 10 days, gets a reprint or a refund.
Eco Friendly Boxes: questions
12 answersAre kraft boxes better for the environment than white boxes?
Kraft boxes are usually left uncoated with light print, which keeps them simple. The bigger gains come from correct sizing and avoiding plastic film.
Can I have an eco box without any laminate?
Yes. Uncoated kraft is a standard option and has no plastic film. Print sits straight on the board.
Do you make boxes that close without tape?
Yes. Mailer styles with locking tabs fold shut without tape. You can add a paper tape if you want extra security.
Is full colour print a problem for an eco box?
It uses more ink than one or two colour print, but the box is still card. On kraft, colours look softer than on white board.
Can my box say it is recyclable?
We print the text you approve. Keep claims factual and only use wording you can support.
What filler suits a kraft eco box?
Card inserts, kraft paper or paper shred keep the parcel paper-based. A close fit means you need less filler.
Which flute is lightest?
E flute, at about 1.5 mm, is the lightest corrugated option we offer. It suits small and medium items that are not heavy.
Does foil stamping stop a box being plain paper?
Foil adds a thin metallic layer. If you want an all-card box, embossing gives a raised logo without adding another material.
Can you make inserts from card instead of foam?
Yes. Inserts are cut from folding board or corrugated card to hold each item in place.
Will an eco box protect fragile goods?
Yes, if the board and insert suit the product. B flute or double wall BC board adds protection for heavier or breakable items.
Can I see how kraft looks before ordering?
Every order comes with a free digital proof showing your artwork on kraft. Printing starts only after you approve it.
Do eco boxes take longer to make?
No. Production is 4–6 business days after proof approval, the same as our other boxes.
