What are self seal mailer boxes?

Self seal mailer boxes are folding corrugated mailers with a factory-applied glue strip on the lid flap. You peel the backing, press the lid down and the parcel is sealed. Many also carry a tear strip so the customer can open the box cleanly.

What is a self seal mailer box?

It is a one-piece corrugated mailer with a strip of adhesive already fixed to the lid flap. A thin paper liner covers the glue until you are ready to close the box.

The body folds from a single flat blank, much like our standard custom printed mailer boxes. The difference is the closure. Instead of a tuck held by friction or a run of tape, the lid is glued shut by the person packing it.

Who orders self seal mailers?

Mostly shops that pack a lot of the same parcel every day. Saving a few seconds of taping on each box adds up across a shift.

  • Subscription brands sending one box size to every customer each month
  • Clothing sellers posting folded garments in a slim mailer
  • Beauty and skincare shops that want a tidy, tape-free lid
  • Book and stationery sellers packing at a kitchen table or small unit
  • Gift companies who want the box to look closed by hand, not wrapped in tape

How does the peel and seal strip work?

The glue sits on the inside face of the front tuck flap. Once the strip is exposed, it bonds to the box wall when the lid is pressed down.

A few habits make a long packing run go faster.

  • Store the flat blanks close to the bench so each one is a reach away
  • Fold a small batch of bases first, then fill and close them in a row
  • Keep the peeled liners in a bin at the bench; they are slippery underfoot
  • Press along the full length of the strip, not just the middle
  • Put the address label on the lid, away from the tear strip
  1. Fold the base and side walls up so the box stands square.
  2. Place the product and any paper fill inside.
  3. Pull the paper liner off the adhesive strip in one smooth motion.
  4. Close the lid and tuck the front flap into place.
  5. Run your hand firmly along the glued edge for a few seconds.

Do I need a tear strip as well?

A tear strip is a perforated pull tab cut into the front panel. The customer pulls it and the lid lifts away without scissors or a knife.

It pairs well with an adhesive seal because the glue is strong and the box is not meant to be prised open. If you skip the tear strip, buyers will cut through the board, which can damage what is inside. Ask on your quote if you also want a second glue strip for returns, and we will confirm whether your size allows it.

Self seal lid or plain tuck lid: which should I choose?

A plain tuck lid holds by friction alone. It is fine for gift boxes handed over in person, but in the post it usually needs tape across the front to stop it popping open.

The adhesive version removes that step and gives a cleaner finish, because there is no strip of tape across your print. It costs a little more per box than a plain tuck, since the glue and liner are added at the factory. If you pack fewer than a handful of orders a day, tape may be all you need. Once volumes grow, the time saved at the bench tends to matter more than the small extra cost.

Some sellers keep both: plain tuck boxes for local hand delivery, and the self seal style for anything going through the post.

What size self seal mailer do I need?

Measure the product, then add a small allowance on each side for paper fill or a card insert. We make the box to the inside length, width and height you give us, in mm, cm or inches.

Keep the height snug. A tall gap above the product lets it slide, and the adhesive lid will not pull the contents tight the way tape can. Our guide on measuring a box inside correctly walks through the method step by step.

Is a glued lid secure enough for the post?

For the goods these boxes usually carry, yes. The strip bonds along the whole front flap, so the lid cannot be lifted at a corner the way a loose tuck can.

Security also depends on fit. A product that fills the box keeps pressure off the lid, while an empty space invites the panels to flex in transit. For heavier items, choose B flute at about 3 mm and use paper fill so nothing shifts. If an item is breakable, wrap it on its own before it goes in, and keep the parcel weight sensible for a folding mailer. Very heavy orders are better suited to a corrugated shipping carton taped along the seams.

Which board suits a self seal mailer?

Most self seal mailers are single wall corrugated. The flute you choose sets the thickness and how the box feels in the hand.

BoardThicknessGood for
E flute single wallAbout 1.5 mmClothing, cosmetics, light retail goods
B flute single wallAbout 3 mmHeavier orders, glass jars wrapped in fill
White E fluteAbout 1.5 mmBright full colour print on the outside
Kraft E fluteAbout 1.5 mmA natural brown look with one colour print

Can the box be printed inside and out?

Yes. We print plain, one colour, two colour or full colour CMYK, on the outside, the inside or both. A message under the lid is a popular choice because it is the first thing seen once the strip is torn.

For a finish, pick from uncoated kraft, matte or gloss laminate, spot UV, foil stamping or embossing. Keep artwork clear of the glue strip and the tear line, as those areas are cut or covered. You can sketch the layout in Design Your Box on this site before sending files.

Common mistakes with self seal mailers

Most problems come from sizing or handling rather than the glue itself.

  • Ordering a box that is too deep, so goods rattle under the lid
  • Leaving blanks in a cold van or damp room before use
  • Placing artwork or a QR code right across the tear line
  • Overfilling so the lid bows and the strip only touches at the ends
  • Touching the exposed glue with dusty fingers before closing

Self Seal Mailer Boxes: questions

12 answers
Do self seal mailers need any tape?

No. The adhesive strip holds the lid closed on its own. Some sellers add a branded tape for looks, but it is not needed to seal the box.

How long does the adhesive stay usable?

Kept flat, dry and at room temperature, the strip stays ready to use for a long time. Heat and damp are what weaken it, so avoid storing blanks near radiators or in outbuildings.

Can the customer reseal the box for a return?

Only if the box has a second glue strip. Ask for this on your quote and we will check whether your size and flap depth allow two strips.

Is the tear strip included as standard?

It is an option you choose on the quote. We recommend it with a glued lid, because it gives the customer a clean way in.

Can I print on the inside of the lid?

Yes. Inside print is available in one colour or full colour, and the lid panel is the most common spot for a thank-you message.

Which board is best for a self seal mailer?

E flute single wall at about 1.5 mm suits most clothing and beauty orders. B flute at about 3 mm gives extra thickness for heavier items.

Will the glue stick to a laminated box?

The strip is applied to the flap and bonds to the box wall. We plan where lamination sits so the seal still closes properly, and the proof shows this.

How are the boxes delivered?

They arrive flat, with the strip already fixed and covered by its liner. Tracked delivery takes 2 to 3 business days after production.

What sizes can you make?

Any inside length, width and height you need, given in mm, cm or inches. The sizes in the table above are common starting points, not stock sizes.

Can I see the layout before printing?

Yes. Every order gets a free digital proof showing the artwork, the glue strip and the tear line before anything is printed.

What if some self seal boxes arrive damaged?

Send us photos within 10 days of delivery if any boxes are misprinted, damaged or faulty. We will reprint them or refund you.

How much do self seal mailers cost?

Pricing starts from £0.25 per unit. Your exact price depends on size, board and print, and is confirmed on a written quote.
